My son and I started playing #FinalFantasy9. Loving all the #airships (only some of which are blowing up!) and it feels like a great refinement of the systems from #FinalFantasy7, which is the one from this era I've played the most.
Most games I play nowadays fit easily into my "dad" life. They have gameplay loops of about 20-30 minutes and generous saving systems. So far, Final Fantasy IX's checkpoints are 40-60 minutes apart, which make perfect sense for game in isolation but are a little stressful for me; my life is just shaped a little differently than what the game expects.
Playing this on my modded #PS2, by the way! Ripped my discs and converted them to .vcd, uploaded them with #PSBBN, uploaded to a harddrive embeded in the console. Great that new mod tools are still being made! https://github.com/CosmicScale/PSBBN-Definitive-Project

Deep into Season 5 of #StarTrekVoy, watching with my son, and we still can't fathom the total lack of mental health care resources for the crew.
Greiving over the deaths of friends back home? Go without starlight for 2 months? Grappling with violent impulses? Literally DIE and get resurrected through a medial miracle?
The sole lever the crew pulls is "Neelix throws a party." Occasionaly, Tuvok does a mind meld.

I recognize we are very fortunate to have the savings to make these kinds of purchases, and that the state/federal landscape is very different from what it was even a few years ago.
But as a matter of policy, we should be allowing this kind of transition to be even more attractive! Because of federal/state incentives, the energy generated by our panels and conserved by our heat pumps gets more and more valuable as the cost of energy goes up in the state.

Energy prices have spiked for all kinds of reasons in CT, but #solar and #heatpumps are paying off for our home.
We got solar panels and heat pumps right after moving in, so it's hard to do a real pre-post comparison of expenses. But we can use some averages to do a back-of-napkin estimate.
Average annual electricity bill in #CT in 2025: $2,486
Annual cost of using oil to heat a 2,000 sq ft home: $3,377
Our combined electric and oil costs in 2025: $2,804
So our overall energy bill might be $3,059 what it could be without switching to solar and heat pumps.
Of course, we had to pay for these systems. After state incentives and a federal rebate, we paid: $23,254 for the panels. Our heat pump system was $13,579.34 - paid for with a 0% loan from the state, which we pay off at ~$120 a month.
Assuming annual costs stay the same (lol), by my math, we break even in 7 more years. And meanwhile, we're green(er)!

I've been reading people's mail.
They are the letters of Abigail and John Adams from 1775, so historians tell me this OK?
John is *extremely* cautious in writing. Lots hints and promises to say more in person. This was wise, because a lot of the letters of the Continental Congress were intercepted by the British at the time.
This all makes me wonder what the state of #cryptography was in those days, and whether the Adams could have adopted any good encryption measures.

Once when I was a kid playing Scrabble, I had a word I could almost spell but for a single missing letter. It would have earned me a modest amount of points, so I asked my opponent if we could suspend the rules, just for a turn. He agreed, and I played my 15-point word.
My opponent then played all of his tiles to make a 150pt garble on the triple point tile. The game was totally broken from then on, because the whole premise was undermined.
Anyway, I don't think the Dems should #gerrymander.

So it seems that if #Cyberpunk2077 is trying to say anything about oppression, it's speaking with the language of class and capitalism. But it strikingly leaves out most of the other forms of division that emerge in an oppressive society. As a result, Night City feels almost enlightened, sometimes: multicultural, gender egalitarian. If you ignore the poverty and the corpos flying overhead, it it might be a nice place to live.

You meet about an even number of sex workers on the gender binary in #Cyberpunk20077. A person with breasts and a penis is part of the hypersexualized advertising scape. The most wealthy and powerful people come from a broad spectrum of ethnic groups.
There *is* a relationship between ethnic groups and class, in some instances. The mostly Japanese Araska corp rests at the top of the power hierarchy, and burnt out Pacifica is controlled by the Haitian VooDoo boys.

Another thing about #Cyberpunk2077. It seems that the primary (only?) form of oppression is class-based.
My understanding of state oppression is that that the state needs to divide the people as many ways as possible so they don't unite. So they encourage hatred of ethnic groups, of trans people, of migrants, of women. You don't see a ton of that kind of division in Night City.

This time around, the characterization of the NCPD in #Cyberpunk2077 as a good but flawed organization seems implausible. Corpo power seems enormous - how, if the leadership and the money driving the NCPD comes from corpo dollars, could a municipal police force be even partially safe from corruption?

In the story, the NCPD are presented as a positive force, but understaffed, underfunded, and constrained by Corpo interests.
The player receives missions to kill gang members, and in some cases.

The police in #Cyberpunk2077 are flawed, as any institution in Night City.
In terms of people, there are "good cops" (most dramatically personified in River Ward) and dirty cops who receive bribes from the Corpos. The player is exposed to both over the course of the game.

But small towns have their flaws, the same as big international development programs. Of course they do. And they're frustrating as all get out.
I see in myself the desire of moving away. Move to a city, maybe one with a big urban green movement. Maybe *then* I'll be in a better setting, the little vagabond on my shoulder whispers in my ear.
Maybe restlessness and "grass is greener" syndrome is the human condition. But I'm getting old enough to recognize it. What to do about it... 🤷‍♂️

I'm old enough to recognize a pattern in my thinking. Every few years I drop the thing I was doing, (work/passion project/cause/association). I get fed up and stressed out with the flaws in [thing] and swing to another thing, hoping *this* will be the one that fulfils me.
With the birth of my son, my wife and I moved from Washington, D.C., to a smaller town in Connecticut, in a house. I told myself, small town engagement will be far more satisfying than international development.

Searching for audiobooks can be exhausting. I'm searching for a history audiobook and listened to a sample. The narrator sounds strangely like the Instagram AI voiceover guy.
I want to try to spend money on actual voice actors so I do a little research. I find "Bill Caufield" has recorded over a hundred books for this publisher since December 2023 but has no website or profile that I can find.
I'm still not 100% sure if the voice is AI or human. Any opinions?

I wrote my undergraduate thesis on #Iran's nuclear program. I learned two things:
- All countries, including Iran, have a right to peaceful nuclear power.
- Whether the U.S. condemns a country's covert nuclear weapons program depends largely on whether we are allies with the country. Israel's program is illegal, and destabilizing, but they are allies, so...🤷

On an email thread where people are talking about the caloric challenges of farmwork. It requires 4,000+ kcal/day for vigorous effort on a farm, but smallhold farmers in Kenya have access to 2,500 kcal/day. Assuming 2000 kcal for normal metabolic function, you only have 500 kcal for work.
These are *farmers* that lack access to calories.
What a messed up world we've built.

@nprofile…xgpv Coming from a role where I was focused on digital privacy, I understand why you'd bounce off. We debated this internally, and decided to limit logins to "the big three" in order for us not to maintain a password system (small team, limited resources, etc).
In the future we *do* want to make a version that requires no login, where all observations are stored locally.

OK, I get it: Merlin, PictureThis, iNaturalist: all booming apps that help people identify those cute animals and plants.
LandPKS helps people identify *soils*, but people don't think soils are cute.
What I need is for Disney to produce an animated movie about soils. With... like... Pedro Pascal as a Sandy Clay Loam. People don't believe he can support agriculture land use but with a can-do attitude and a soundtrack by Lin Manuel Miranda, he pulls through and supports an orchard.

OK, I've been very much opposed to pretty much every use of an #LLM I've encountered, but at the recommendation of a co-worker I tried GitHub's #copilot and... I'm kind of astounded. 😳
It walked me through the process of making a simple web app in Flask, translated my python code into a web app, helped me obfuscate my keys and debug when issues arose. What blew my mind is when it processed an error message and made a recommendation about how I should adjust my implementation.

As a citizen of the United States I am not often exposed to U.S. imperial territory, but it occasionally shows up when you look at maps. The SSURGO soil map project extends, not only the the states and Puerto Rico, but also Palau and American Samoa.

I'm picking up with a years old save, and I had a brief moment of "what on earth was I supposed to be doing?"
Prime 2's "hint" system that calls the user to the next place to progress the story.
I found that hint system to be helpful; even necessary to progress. I obtained an upgrade and the next world was far away, in another map, in the dark world. I would have found it eventually, probably, but as a parent with limited time, a guiding light was helpful.

Prime 2 feels more "oppressive" than its predecessor. The dark world eats away at the players health for most of the game, and ammo for the powerful guns limited. I disliked it when I played 15 years ago, but having gone through Dark Souls and other high-challenge exploration games, I feel less nervous.

I've been playing #MetroidPrime2 on #GameCube.
A very pleasant experience, especially now that I have the digital-to-HDMI adapter. The image is 480p, which isn't stellar by modern games but looks better than the composite signal allowed.

I'm so proud of my team for this. We have a fraction of the resources of Esri but we've built a really slick, free tool for environmental story telling. And THIS feature was built because we did field work and listened to our partners about what was most important to them. It feels good.

As a color blind person I've always felt that multispectral visualizations of a linear variable were confusing. It seems much more clear to present a single color and vary it in lightness.
This one in particular seems strange. The bottom end of the axis goes to -60F, a value not represented in the image.

I want a #startrek game but instead of commanding the bridge or firing a phaser I want to be working in the hydroponics bay or engineering.
#LowerDecks has a great vibe. The crew knows about the mission but they might not necessarily be on the bridge when the command comes in from the admiral. A game could be about the grunt work of being an officer, maintaining the ship, repairing the holodeck, the occaisional away mission or two, and the social dynamic of working with the rest of the crew.
