Why it takes you and an elephant the same amount of time to poop https://www.pbs.org/newshour/health/takes-elephant-amount-time-poop
As fluid dynamicists, we joined forces with colorectal surgeon Daniel Chu, and two stalwart undergraduates, Candice Kaminski and Morgan LaMarca, who filmed defecation and hand-picked feces from 34 mammalian species at Zoo Atlanta in order to measure their density and viscosity.
We learned that most elephants and other herbivores create "floaters" while most tigers and other carnivores create "sinkers." Inadvertently, we also ranked feces from most to least smelly, starting with tiger and rhino and going all the way to panda. The zoo's variety of animals provided us with a range of fecal sizes and shapes that served as independent pieces of evidence to validate our mathematical model of the duration of defecation.

Mammal-inspired skin sweats to keep batteries cool https://newatlas.com/energy/mammal-inspired-skin-sweats-cools-batteries/
Lithium-ion batteries are highly efficient, dissipating less than 10% of their energy as heat during operation. However, they require thermal management systems to regulate this heat, as it can negatively impact their performance and lifespan. On the other hand, their far more inefficient electrochemical distant cousin, the human body, generates enough heat to boil over 100 cups of tea daily and is literally just chillin'.
The secret? Our skin and its ability to sweat. A team of researchers from the City University of Hong Kong may have found a way to give batteries this ability, using a Skin-Inspired Adaptive Nanocomposites Cooling Membrane.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) bought data from the online advertising ecosystem to track peoples’ precise movements over time, in a process that often involves siphoning data from ordinary apps like video games, dating services, and fitness trackers, according to an internal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) document obtained by 404 Media.
The document shows in stark terms the power, and potential risk, of online advertising data and how it can be leveraged by government agencies for surveillance purposes. https://www.404media.co/cbp-tapped-into-the-online-advertising-ecosystem-to-track-peoples-movements/

‘I live in constant fear’: surge in giant sinkholes threatens Turkey’s farmers
Falling groundwater, extreme heat and water-intensive farming are accelerating land collapse, forcing a rethink in agricultural practices https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/feb/28/i-live-in-constant-fear-surge-in-giant-sinkholes-threatens-turkeys-farme
Fatih Sik was drinking tea with friends at home when he heard a rumbling sound outside that grew to a loud boom, like a volcano had erupted nearby. From the window, he saw water and mud shoot into the sky, as high as the tallest trees, less than 100 metres away.
The 47-year-old knew what it was, because it is common in Karapınar, Konya, a vast agricultural province known as Turkey’s breadbasket. A giant sinkhole had opened up on his land. Fifty metres wide and 40 metres deep, it had appeared almost a year to the day after a previous one had formed. It was August – the hottest month of the year.
Sik was born on the farm he now owns, which his father ran before him, yet he says scientists have told local people the area is no longer livable. One house nearby has collapsed into a sinkhole. “Every night I pray before I go to bed and when I wake up I pray again,” said Sik. “I live in constant fear that a sinkhole will take my house.”
Konya, part of the once-fertile Central Anatolia region, gave life to ancient civilisations, including what is believed to be the world’s first agricultural society, at Çatalhöyük, in about 8,000BC. It is dotted with the remnants of water cults, Hittite sacred springs and Roman aqueducts, and once offered vital watering holes to traders on the Silk Road. Now, though, the land is drying up. Turkey is on the brink of a major drought crisis, with almost 90% of the country at risk of becoming desert.

Ancient stepwells brought back to life as India begins to run out of water as parts of the country head towards “day zero” when no water will be available https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2026/feb/26/ancient-stepwells-brought-back-india-run-out-water-day-zer
“It was such a joyous moment to see water collecting into the stepwell after clearing 40 years of garbage,” says Hajira Adeeb, a 45-year-old resident of Bansilalpet, who grew up seeing the well become transformed from the community’s water source to a dumping ground. “I visit almost every day. The area is clean and lit up in the evenings. I enjoy sitting there.”
India is famed for its stepwells – multi-storey structures built to provide access to groundwater, with steps and platforms descending to the water level. Thousands were built across the country near natural aquifers – underground porous rock saturated with water – mostly between the 11th and 18th centuries.

Any entomologists on here? We have an ag entomologists in the community who left some traps here to put out in spring.
specifically, we're aiming to catch any bark beetles for identification. We had a scare in the late fall when we found some grubs in large rounds of Oak that were brought up here when we were splitting it. But it's really hard to get positive ID on grubs. All of that wood has been tarped and sealed up.
We're now looking at mid to high 70s and maybe even 80s and sunny this week. Would this trigger beetle emergence? Should I put the traps out now or wait another month?

https://patch.com/california/orange-county/ice-secretly-leases-space-advance-minneapolis-style-ca-surge-report
The federal government is quietly purchasing warehouses for a massive expansion of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, according to documents posted online Friday by a Republican congressman. Additionally, a federal official said that California and New York are among the "next" for an Immigration and Customs Enforcement surge similar to the campaign in Minneapolis, with plans to embed hundreds of new ICE offices in Sacramento, Irvine, Santa Ana and Van Nuys, according to an explosive report by WIRED.
According to the WIRED report, ICE is leasing space in two Orange County cities — at an office park in Irvine and at the federal building in Santa Ana.
"This is news to me," Irvine Mayor Larry Agran told The Orange County Register. "We try to maintain some channels of communication with Border Patrol, with ICE, with Homeland Security... it's not easy to do. They're not very cooperative at all, and [not] letting us know what they're planning, what their activities consist of."
City officials are frequently unable to get details from ICE until a property sale is finalized.
The Irvine building, located at 2020 Main St., is situated near John Wayne Airport and several fast-casual restaurants. The Santa Ana Federal Building is located within blocks of a church and the OC Civic Center.
In Van Nuys — a neighborhood in Los Angeles — ICE is expanding offices at the James C. Corman federal building, that also houses offices for the IRS and Health and Human Services, the report said.
In San Diego, federal agents are allegedly leasing offices at the Edward J. Schwartz Courthouse and federal building, WIRED reported.
In Sacramento, ICE has installed security features at the John E. Moss building ahead of further expansion, according to WIRED.

criminy.
From Government Executive magazine: The Social Security Administration has instructed employees newly assigned to answering phones to tell callers expressing suicidal thoughts that suicide is “one option,” raising concerns from employees and experts in the field who called the approach unorthodox.
SSA recently began shifting new swaths of its workforce to phone answering duty, including those who normally receive and process retirement and disability claims, manage the agency’s technology and work in the agency's finances unit. Those employees received brief, three-hour training before they began answering calls.
As part of that training, they were warned some callers may express suicidal ideation and presented with examples using a theoretical employee named Fiona.
“It's important for Fiona to keep the caller engaged and to remind her that suicide is only one option,” the animated trainer told employees in the video, a copy of which was obtained by Government Executive, “and that there is no urgency to make any decisions.”

What began as a peaceful march and rally against federal immigration raids escalated into an altercation between federal police and students in downtown Los Angeles on Friday afternoon. https://ktla.com/news/local-news/student-walkout-held-in-downtown-l-a-in-protest-of-immigration-enforcement/
Police called for additional backup at the Metropolitan Detention Center as tensions rose. According to Sky5’s Rich Prickett, the crowd refused orders to return to the sidewalk, and officers retreated into the building in a “defensive posture.”
As of 2 p.m. Friday, the march is heading north on Los Angeles St between Temple and Aliso St. Northbound lanes of Los Angeles St. are being impacted.
Hundreds of Los Angeles students walked out of class Friday afternoon to protest recent federal immigration operations. Their march began on the steps of City Hall. The walkout is one of several held in recent weeks across Southern California amid rising anti-ICE sentiment as immigration enforcement increases nationwide.

Say what now?!?
When a predator like a lion walks through the grasslands, it makes its presence known by roaring, which can be heard miles away. Since the lion is at the top of the food chain, it doesn’t particularly require privacy. But for animals like deer, making loud sounds isn’t exactly the safest way to communicate. So, to get noticed, deer mark areas with rubs and scrapes, known as signposts. Now, a new study in Ecology and Evolution reports that these signposts hold a hidden glow, and other deer can see it. https://newatlas.com/biology/forests-glow-uv-light-deer-communication/
To investigate how the environment might glow in response to animal behaviors, the lead author of the study, Daniel DeRose-Broeckert, and his colleagues surveyed an 800-acre area in the Whitehall Forest and located white-tailed deer’s (Odocoileus virginianus) active signposts.
The team marked those signposts with flagging tapes and GPS points. From the sites, they analyzed 109 antler rubs, 37 scrapes, and 20 urinated spots. The light measurements revealed that these markers emit light in wavelengths that stand out against the surrounding environment when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays.
In an interview DeRose-Broeckert told us that deer are more sensitive to blue wavelengths and UV light than humans. A deer’s eye sensitivity picks up the wavelengths emitted by the glow, i.e., 450-460 nm and 537 nm ranges. Also, deer are most active at dawn and dusk, when the sunlight is low and visible light fades, making ultraviolet wavelengths more prominent.

Finally getting around to doing the math for a sand battery...
My panels operating voltage and current are 38.6v and 8.44A. That means for one panel the ideal heating element would be 4.6 ohms. For 2 panels in series, 9.1 ohms.
The little immersion heater coil I got says it's 1000W at 110VAC. Which would mean 9.1A, and therefore be about 12.1 ohms. But the ohmmeter says it's 17.6 ohms.
That might be a bit high for the panels. hard to say what power point that will produce. Will just have to try.
If I were to power from my 25.6V batteries, and it's really a 17.6ohm element, that would only be 1.4A, so only 37W. So that's out.
The only other option with this element would be to keep it AC, and have the FM80 aux output programmed to open a relay to power it once the batteries reach float. On most days that'll be by 1p at the latest, and that gives me 4 hrs at 1kW of heat going into the sand for 4kWh of heat storage or about 13650BTU. That would probably be meaningful.

And the meat of the article to tie into the headline:
The federal surge into Minneapolis reflects a series of mistaken MAGA assumptions. The first is the belief that diverse communities aren’t possible: “Social bonds form among people who have something in common,” Vance said in a speech last July. “If you stop importing millions of foreigners into the country, you allow social cohesion to form naturally.” Vance’s remarks are the antithesis to the neighborism of the Twin Cities, whose people do not share the narcissism of being capable of loving only those who are exactly like them.
A second MAGA assumption is that the left is insincere in its values, and that principles of inclusion and unity are superficial forms of virtue signaling. White liberals might put a sign in their front yard saying IMMIGRANTS WELCOME, but they will abandon those immigrants at the first sensation of sustained pressure.
And in Trump’s defense, this has turned out to be true of many liberals in positions of power—university administrators, attorneys at white-shoe law firms, political leaders. But it is not true of millions of ordinary Americans, who have poured into the streets in protest, spoken out against the administration, and, in Minnesota, resisted armed men in masks at the cost of their own life.
The MAGA faith in liberal weakness has been paired with the conviction that real men—Trump’s men—are conversely strong. Consider Miller’s bizarre meltdown while addressing Memphis police in October. “The gangbangers that you deal with—they think that they’re ruthless? They have no idea how ruthless we are. They think they’re tough? They have no idea how tough we are,” Miller said. “They think they’re hard-core? We are so much more hard-core than they are.” Around this time, Miller moved his family onto a military base—for safety reasons.
The federal agents sent to Minnesota wear body armor and masks, and bear long guns and sidearms. But their skittishness and brutality are qualities associated with fear, not resolve. It takes far more courage to stare down the barrel of a gun while you’re armed with only a whistle and a phone than it does to point a gun at an unarmed protester.
Every social theory undergirding Trumpism has been broken on the steel of Minnesotan resolve. The multiracial community in Minneapolis was supposed to shatter. It did not. It held until Bovino was forced out of the Twin Cities with his long coat between his legs.
The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesive—because of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about “Western civilization,” while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.

The Atlantic has had some good #Minnesota pieces recently. This is their latest.
MINNESOTA PROVED MAGA WRONG
The pushback against ICE exposed a series of mistaken assumptions. (gift article) https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/01/the-neighbors-defending-minnesota-from-ice/685769/?gift=6qi1zpVjfanikscENJ8rz00xy4yJQvyhvh6q6llygfc
Instead, what they discovered in the frozen North was something different: a real resistance, broad and organized and overwhelmingly nonviolent, the kind of movement that emerges only under sustained attacks by an oppressive state. Tens of thousands of volunteers—at the very least—are risking their safety to defend their neighbors and their freedom. They aren’t looking for attention or likes on social media. Unless they are killed by federal agents, as Pretti and Renee Good were, other activists do not even necessarily know their names. Many use a handle or code name out of fear of government retaliation. Their concerns are justified: A number of people working as volunteers or observers told me that they had been trailed home by ICE agents, and some of their communications have already been infiltrated, screenshotted, and posted online, forcing them to use new text chains and code names. One urgent question among observers, as the videos of Pretti’s killing spread, was what his handle might have been.
Trump-administration officials and MAGA influencers have repeatedly called these activists “violent” and said they are involved in “riots.” But the resistance in Minnesota is largely characterized by a conscious, strategic absence of physical confrontation. Activists have made the decision to emphasize protection, aid, and observation. When matters escalate, it is usually the choice of the federal agents. Of the three homicides in Minneapolis this year, two were committed by federal agents.
“There’s been an incredible, incredible response from the community. I’ve seen our neighbors go straight from allies to family—more than family—checking in on each other, offering food and rides for kids and all kinds of support, alerting each other if there’s ICE or any kind of danger,

So many people in #VanLife groups putting their lives at risk with their #Solar systems. The problem is inverter size vs system voltage. People are running 3500W and even higher wattage inverters on a 12V battery bank. That's 300A of current!! Not only do the wires need to be massive, expensive, and hard to negotiate around curves, but at those current levels you'd need to constantly monitor the torque on the connections and any heat build up in the wires.
Every connection is going to have some resistance. The higher the current the greater the voltage drop/heat build up through that resistance. This then causes thermal expansion/contraction which will loosen those connections resulting in even higher resistance and heat. Note the positive feedback loop. There's very little room for error at such high current levels. the same process can happen with a poor crimp.
12V is fine up to 2kW. 24V to 4kW. Anything above that and you should just go 48V.

Feds pay $125K after Border Patrol agent pointed gun at Portland hotel worker https://www.oregonlive.com/crime/2026/01/feds-pay-125k-after-border-patrol-agent-pointed-gun-at-portland-hotel-worker.html
The federal government Friday agreed to pay $125,000 after a judge found a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent liable for civil assault for pointing a gun at a hotel maintenance man who came to the agent’s room to unclog a toilet.
Jones was staying in Room 428 at the Residence Inn by Marriott in North Portland and had called down to the front desk to report a malfunctioning toilet.
Christopher Frison, a chief maintenance engineer at the hotel, arrived at Jones’ room about 5 p.m. on July 27, 2020, and knocked several times. Frison also called out “maintenance,” gave his name and waited, holding a plunger, he testified in court.
That’s when “Jones opened the door ready to defend himself and his room,” according to U.S. District Judge Adrienne Nelson’s 22-page opinion.
According to Frison, Jones was wearing a sweatshirt with the hood pulled over his head when he “swung” the hotel door open, reached with his right hand behind his back and suddenly pointed a handgun at Frison’s chest. He said Jones held his gun in two hands, both arms outstretched.
“What the hell are you doing? What is going on?” Frison said he screamed. “All I could see was the white of his eyes. I could see the anger in his face. I wasn’t there as a threat. I was there as a maintenance worker.”
Frison testified that Jones pointed the gun at him for four to five seconds before uttering twice that he “f----- up.”
The judge found that Frison’s lawyers didn’t need to prove that Jones intended to shoot Frison or cause him physical injury. It didn’t matter if the gun was loaded or not, according to her opinion. It was clear Jones “intended” to place Frison in fear of imminent harm, she ruled.
“Simply put, that Jones opened the door quickly and pointed a gun at plaintiff is sufficient to establish defendant’s liability for civil assault,” Nelson wrote.

“To Minnesotans, on the National Guard, they’re there to protect you and protect your constitutional rights,” Walz said. “These are our neighbors. They don’t wear masks. They don’t bust in from somewhere else. They’re not here to cause hassles to you or what we saw today, the tragedy.”
“From here on, I have a very simple message: We do not need any further help from the federal government,” Walz said. “To Donald Trump and [Homeland Security Secretary] Kristi Noem, you’ve done enough.”

I personally just find the tradition a little vulgar now that I’m steeped in native culture and spirituality, where all life is sacred and there should be good cause to take one. Coupled with its beginning as a means for the church to halt earth based traditions by cutting down the living trees druids would have ceremony with and dragging them into the church.

Amid a deepening ecological crisis and acute water shortage, Tehran can no longer remain the capital of #Iran, the country’s president has said. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/irans-capital-has-run-out-of-water-forcing-it-to-move/
The situation in Tehran is the result of “a perfect storm of climate change and corruption,” says Michael Rubin, a political analyst at the American Enterprise Institute.
“We no longer have a choice,” said Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian during a speech on Thursday.
Instead Iranian officials are considering moving the capital to the country’s southern coast. But experts say the proposal does not change the reality for the nearly 10 million people who live in Tehran and are now suffering the consequences of a decades-long decline in water supply.
Since at least 2008, scientists have warned that unchecked groundwater pumping for the city and for agriculture was rapidly draining the country’s aquifers. The overuse did not just deplete underground reserves—it destroyed them, as the land compressed and sank irreversibly. One recent study found that Iran’s central plateau, where most of the country’s aquifers are located, is sinking by more than 35 centimeters each year. As a result, the aquifers lose about 1.7 billion cubic meters of water annually as the ground is permanently crushed, leaving no space for underground water storage to recover.

A device exploded inside the Goldenson Building in Harvard’s Longwood medical campus early Saturday morning, according to a message from the Harvard University Police Department to University affiliates. The Boston Fire Department Arson Unit responded to the incident and determined the explosion to be intentional. https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2025/11/2/explosion-longwood/
The explosion took place on an area of the fourth floor of Goldenson, a Harvard Medical School building on the school’s main quad. An officer who responded shortly before 3 a.m. observed two individuals fleeing the building, according to the email sent by HUPD spokesperson Steven G. Catalano this afternoon. HUPD sent a subsequent email to Harvard affiliates shortly after 5 p.m. asking for assistance identifying two men, who they described as suspects. The images were captured on security footage. Both men are shown wearing sweatshirts with hoods and ski masks.
The Boston Police Department performed a sweep of the building and determined there were no additional devices in the building. No injuries were reported in relation to the incident.

A new study published in the journal Science reveals black garden ants (Lasius niger) modify their nest architecture to slow an outbreak – an insect version of social distancing built into the walls. https://newatlas.com/biology/ants-social-distancing-pandemic/
...ants exposed to fungal spores made increased layout modifications. Entrances ended up, on average, about 6 mm farther from one another. This increased spacing between the entrance area meant fewer crowding points at the surface.
The exposed colonies also constructed chambers with longer and winding routes in less central locations. Ants even dug multiple tunnels, likely alternative routes of transport to avoid contact. The study also recorded the increased surface activity from the pathogen-exposed workers, which likely reflects self-isolation and social distancing.

Consumer Reports: Protein Powders and Shakes Contain High Levels of Lead https://www.consumerreports.org/lead/protein-powders-and-shakes-contain-high-levels-of-lead-a4206364640/
For more than two-thirds of the products we analyzed, a single serving contained more lead than CR’s food safety experts say is safe to consume in a day—some by more than 10 times. “It’s concerning that these results are even worse than the last time we tested,” said Tunde Akinleye, the CR food safety researcher who led the testing project.
Nearly all the plant-based products CR tested had elevated lead levels, but some were particularly concerning. Two had so much lead that CR’s experts caution against using them at all. A single serving of these protein powders contained between 1,200 and 1,600 percent of CR’s level of concern for lead, which is 0.5 micrograms per day. Two others had between 400 and 600 percent of that level per daily serving.
The lead levels in plant-based products were, on average, nine times the amount found in those made with dairy proteins like whey, and twice as great as beef-based ones. Dairy-based protein powders and shakes generally had the lowest amounts of lead, but half of the products we tested still had high enough levels of contamination that CR’s experts advise against daily use.

Microplastics Could Be Weakening Your Bones, Research Suggests
The review of more than 60 scientific articles showed that microplastics, among other effects, can stimulate the formation of osteoclasts, cells specialized in degrading bone tissue. https://www.wired.com/story/microplastics-could-be-weakening-your-bones-research-suggests-osteoporosis/
The study also found that, in relation to bones, plastic particles can reduce the viability of cells, induce premature cellular aging, modify gene expression, and trigger inflammatory responses. The combination of these effects generates an imbalance in which osteoclasts destroy more bone tissue than is regenerated, causing an accelerated weakening of bone structure.

AP: After Trump threatened to cut government contracts given to Musk’s SpaceX rocket company and his Starlink internet satellite services, Musk responded via X that SpaceX “will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately.”
It’s unclear how serious Musk’s threat was. But the capsule, developed with the help of government contracts, is an important part of keeping the space station running. NASA also relies heavily on SpaceX for other programs including launching science missions and, later this decade, returning astronauts to the surface of the moon.
___
This is why privatization of space (and military matters) is a really bad idea. And why the military and NASA need to disengage from any reliance on Musk companies. And why emotionally stunted toddlers should not be allowed anywhere near the reins of power.

That is absolute fucking nonsense. The half life of nuclear waste ranges from 10,000 years to 1 million years. The HALF life. It is deadly without active containment requiring human intervention.
When climate change collapses our systems, who is going to maintain that active containment??? If humanity manages to survive, how are they to deal with it with far less resources? Will they even know what it is?
The time scale of this ticking bomb is so staggering that the Department of Energy had to develop a task force to try and figure out how to warn future generations. There was no written language 5,000 years ago. 1 million years ago, Neanderthals walked the earth.
If humanity and even other forms of life manage to survive the climate crisis, they will likely be wiped out by this ill-fated ineffectual attempt to mitigate it - currently every bit of nuclear energy that comes online immediately goes to new consumption by data centers hosting AI craziness.
Meanwhile, abandoned solar panels or wind turbines pose absolutely no danger to any life form. It's problematic, but solvable. Nuclear waste is not, and it's shortsighted to continue pursuing nuclear power until there is a solution to its millennia spanning waste problem.

I'm a hard no with current technologies and reactors.
Prohibitively expensive, with decommissioning/waste costs too often offloaded onto taxpayers after the utility has pocketed all the up front incentives and profits.
And the waste is a ticking time bomb bequeathed to future generations potentially every bit as damaging as the carbon time bomb prior generations bequeathed to us which nuclear advocates claim requires us to use it.
If viable and cost effective Thorium reactors become available that can use traditional nuclear waste as fuel to get rid of it, I may reconsider.

Animals protected by their white stripes were also less stressed, exhibiting fewer head shakes, foot stomping, and other insect-avoidant behavior.

That's just it. Sodium Carbonate is the 6th most abundant element on earth 2.6% of the earth's crust. It's a very low impact to mine or extract - even from seawater. And the batteries can be made without copper or other rare, expensive, or toxic materials.
The lack of toxic materials means it's much cheaper & easier to recycle (although maybe the financial incentives won't be there - at least initially)
Compare that to rare, environmentally costly to mine lithium which is only 0.0017% of the earth's crust. Battery-grade lithium carbonate costs range from $10,000 - $11,000 per metric ton vs. $600 - $650 per metric ton of battery grade sodium carbonate. Lithium batteries are quite flammable leaving behind a toxic mess. Sodium ion batteries are quite stable and have a much wider operating temperature range. No more EVs petering out in cold temps.
