Wow! 5 days later and most of the tomato seedlings have sprouted! As well as one overachieving pepper. I’m always amazed at how much faster these guys sprout in this box at 80°F. Before I built this, I’d be lucky if 25% of the peppers sprouted at all, but now it’s at least 95%!

Got my seeds planted today! Romano and Seychelles beans on the trellis boxes and 12 different pepper and tomato varieties in the seed hot box! Way more than I need, but the neighbors seem to appreciate the extra pepper and tomato starts.

Disallowed here too (might be “illegal” but no one to enforce .. so, huh?).
Totally agree. From a noise perspective, I prefer the lower tone of a gas-powered blower. The electric ones have a horrible high pitch. What they aren’t adding to the air pollution they more than make up with noise pollution!
Can we all just agree that the blowing of leaves in any form is just an insane and largely pointless practice?

Today’s harvest! Despite the funky weather this year, my mini backyard garden is still cranking out the food. Squash is basically done, and tomatoes are closing up shop, but the beans have a second wind (getting two decent harvests each week) and the peppers are just getting started .. will need to do some drying or pickling. So much fun!

Pepper plants are humming along .. hoping to start harvesting in a few weeks and they should keep going for many months! Peppers are the most reliable of all my veggies, although always the slowest to produce. I'm growing 8 varieties this year. Some from saved seeds, and some new!

As a follow up .. this corn was delicious! I’m really excited about how well it came out. Will. Plant another crop of seeds in hopes there’s time for one more batch this season!

Yes. That’s if you have the room for it and want that much corn all at one time. I’ve planted my corn in stages, so I’ll have some throughout the summer, and I don’t have room for that many plants.
Other than being a bit tedious, the hand-pollinating seems to work well, and would work for as few as just one or two plants.

I like the pots. When plants are young I have chicken wire wrapped around the pot to discourage squirrels and birds.
Congrats on the tassel!! :-)
These pots are about 14” diameter at the top, and I’ve got 3 or 4 corn plants in each (well, some don’t have corn at all), depending on what else is in there (squash, peppers, beans).
For hand pollinating, I just clip off a side-tassel and shake it on the silks. Each day might be 5-6 of these. Seems to work!

I got these corn plants as starts from my local organic nursery. The label says .. Rock Ridge Farms corn (Zea Mays) “Natural sweet corn”
As far as I can tell, Zea Mays is just the generic name for corn, so this label doesn’t really tell me much (yes?). I also planted some from seed (“My Fair Lady”) which have almost caught up to the starts. Will be interesting to see how they differ.
My growing conditions are not optimal. Only about 4-5 hours of good sun.

Thanks for the tips and encouragement! I decided to give one a try, and overall Im pretty pleased. Not fully pollinated, but my micro garden is a bit challenged. All in pots, with many different plants in each to maximize output. Also not great sunshine, and I’ve been hand pollinating the corn. All a bit of an experiment. I’ll be eating this tomorrow. :-)

Looks great! I’ve got some corn that I’m hesitant to pick. First time I’ve grown it and just not sure how to tell if it’s ready. Guess I’ll give it a few more days, then start with one ear.

Today’s harvest. One of each type of squash/zucchini! Corn seems to be coming along reasonably well .. won’t really know till the unveiling!
All grown in pots. This year decided to go dense and plant more in each pot. Corn, peppers, squash, beans, all packed together and growing vertically. So far so good. We shall see!

First zucchini blossom of the season! Sadly, no males yet, so no pollination. Zuke blossom for dinner!
And corn tassels are coming along! First time growing corn for me. Just 6 plants, so it sounds like I’ll need to pollinate by hand. Hmm. Will see how that goes!

“Old glass” is slightly wavy, but not generally visible when viewed perpendicular to the pane. You’ll see it when viewed at an angle to the surface. The glass in that window is obscured or patterned. Our house (built in 1923) has a few of these windows left.
It’s my understanding that this waviness is due to different manufacturing methods, not that it has “flowed.”

My mini raised beds are humming along nicely! Romano beans on the left and Seychelles on the right. Radish and carrots in front at various stages. Squash seedlings in peat pots just poking through. And happy chive in front.

We installed a Grundfos recirculating hot water pump for just this reason. It’s just a pump at the water heater and a special valve installed under the sink. No additional plumbing needed. Basically pushes the hot water back through the cold side.
Pros:
- works as advertised, hot water is available in seconds not minutes
- lower overall water use
Cons:
- cold water takes longer
- electric bill went through the roof, heater is basically running constantly

Honest question for those that use AI (not meant to be snarky) .. does it not matter that the answer you receive, may be incorrect? When you get an answer, do you locate an actual source to verify its accuracy?
If you’re using AI for coding, do you analyze the code so you really understand what it’s doing?

Just shelled my first dried beans. On the left are “Mohawk” an heirloom Iroquois cultivar that dates back to prehistory (apparently like pinto beans). On the right are “Cherokee Trail of Tears” an heirloom that was brought from Tennessee by the Cherokee people as they were marched to Oklahoma by the federal government in 1839.
I guess you need a lot of plants to produce enough harvest that amounts to anything substantial. Will be interesting to cook them up. :-)

But that’s not specifically a QR code issue. Someone could replace the label on some device with an alternate URL or instructions.
I could probably count the times I’ve scanned and used a QR code, on one hand. But I do question the validity of instructions that involve a digital device, regardless of their source. All possibly “hacked” in some way.

Just curious. If/when they finally ditch the landlines, do you think there are plans to remove all of the wires and distribution boxes all over the neighborhoods and countryside?Not to mention all of the underground apparatus. Probably not. Those are “gifts” for someone else to deal with when they decompose.
Maybe if they were forced to clean up after themselves, they might decide to keep the system operational for a bit longer?
