The only ones I’ve tried are the Xero sandals and I love em. I’ve used them every day for 2 years and they hardly have any wear. I haven’t tried any of the shoes yet. Boat shoes or slip on Vans are the best regular shoe alternative I’ve used. If you find a good one, let me know!

Honestly not long at all, maybe a week or two, a month at most for cardboard. The chickens tear the paper apart when they scratch, then the microbiology in the coop floor and soil break it down the rest of the way. Small bits of paper and cardboard are great additions to chicken coop bedding since they are high in carbon. Good question!

Loquat season is here in Florida. This is one of my favorite fruits, sweet and tart, it’s a great snack and easy to grow from seed. The leaves also make a great tea. It pains me that people grow this for an ornamental but never eat the fruit. Luckily it works well in suburban permaculture designs for aesthetics, quick growth, and usefulness.

I love this time of year. Citrus eating season has ended, but the best smelling season has begun. The bees are all over the orange blossoms. I’ve only been to orange country in central Florida a couple times during blossoming season, but the smell is truly intoxicating. It’s too bad the citrus industry is failing, but with natural farming methods and polyculture systems, citrus is thriving in North Florida.

I’ve actually got a Sony A7 that I use old film Minolta lenses on it. Threw away autofocus altogether but it is my favorite setup I’ve ever had 7 years running. Even shot a wedding like that and it was brilliant. Used to use Canons for sports, and that worked great 10 years ago, not sure how far systems have come since then. Whatever you’re comfortable using to get the shot, that’s all that matters!

Yep, couldn’t agree more. There are so many arguments to their mindset, but none matter to them unless it’s matched with dollar signs. Simply a low-growing native flower patch that is allowed to reseed itself would be far more efficient and significantly less maintenance (if any at all), and it would benefit the local ecology.
Another idea is to privatize these strips of grass to small scale farms. Free maintenance for the city, profit for the farmer, and benefits local ecology and community.
Here’s to hoping minds change.

Everywhere I see an unused patch of grass, typically beside the road, I design the potential gardens in my mind. In my experience, a well designed garden takes less maintenance/energy than mowing grass, but municipalities insist on grass… I don’t get it…

I’m not sure if this applies universally, but I have significantly fewer big stains on my car than 20 years ago. I used to use specialized scrubbing mitts when washing and now I just use a sponge… the loss of our insect diversity is going to be a major downfall for future generations, not just for pollination, but as feed for wild animals and birds and to nurture the natural food web.

A little over a month in experimenting with electroculture and… I see no differences at all. I placed some copper rods or antennae next to some plants and retained control plants, and I see no appreciable differences. Here is a link to a video showing some of my turmeric plants in comparison. Anyone else trying #electroculture and seeing positive results?
I was skeptical at the first, and I retain my skepticism for now.

Ah, well not sure what part of the world you are in, but they are considered an invasive species here on the east coast US. They line the highways because they are a nitrogen fixing tree emergent species. Frilly leaves and Pom Pom flowers.

Anyone here dabbled in Electroculture? I held off for some time because it seemed like hype and a fad, and I didn’t think adding lightning rods seemed like a good idea for North Florida. But I saw Deep South Homestead put out a video that actually made a convincing case. I had some leftover wire from a home project, so I thought I’d make some antenna and give it a try. I tried to pick the plants that looked the worst to see if there was appreciable changes. Over the weeks, we shall see…

I couldn’t justify the cost of a proper greenhouse, and couldn’t bring myself to waste money on a flimsy one, but I was tired of using my inadequate carport for plant starts. So with a little creativity and about $10, found pallets, and scrap wood, I built a quick test greenhouse in about an hour. It’s primary purpose will be for soil blocks since they cannot get rained on. If this “works”, I’ll spend a little more time on a proper one that my wife can enjoy instead of being repulsed by one of my creations.
The qualifications I needed for a greenhouse can be summarized by the following:
-keep rain off seedlings
-provide consistent light
-be open air so the temperature stays down (too hot most of the year for an enclosed greenhouse)

I was in conversation yesterday evening regarding dogs and their weird presents they bring from yards, and it came up that my friends neighbor was using rat poison and it was killing the squirrels. It got me thinking about the injustice of our legal system. We are perfectly allowed to set out poisons for rodents, weeds, and insects leading to dreadful effects and deaths far beyond our original intent (In short, we are allowed to kill the local wildlife to keep our homes sanitized). But… we are not “allowed” to raise meat ethically, humanely, and safely for consumption within city limits. No… that kind of death is gross and cannot be tolerated.

A headline caught my attention regarding a dust storm that led to the deaths of several people and it is simply a tragedy that could be minimized or prevented. We have the understanding and technology today to eliminate the degradation of our soils, to leave them covered or in permanent roots, and promote the positive accumulation of carbon. There are many problems in our conventional farming system, from financial to practical. People like Mark Shepard shine a bright light for conventional farmers who want to make a profit, and manage their land appropriately. I believe finances could be the primary motivation for farmers to change their practices. I intend to grow out a variety of water-loving plants on this island, like water spinach, mint, Vietnamese coriander, canna lily, and banana and malanga/taro starts. The air-prune bags I use will let water wick in as necessary, and the roots will eventually make it into the pond.
Since this is really a first prototype, and I was just using found materials, I’m sure it could be built differently. I was testing some options using floating buckets, but those kept in mosquito larvae and didn’t let the fish access them.
I like your idea of a permanent wicking island. Perhaps placing a burlap or jute mat base could act as the wick under the growing medium. I think that could be a future iteration!

So I’ve been working through an idea to creat a floating garden for the pond and have worked through several iterations, and I think I have finally settled on a good proof of concept. I wanted to ensure the plants always stayed with the water level since I am irrigating the garden with this pond. I also wanted to not spend any money, so using found and recycled materials. We took the kids out to a blueberry u-pick this morning and while they had an absolute blast, it made me realize the potential of that business model. A food forest orchard would multiply the yields by spreading out the harvests from early spring to late fall (and perhaps even beyond). Here in North Florida, I could imagine a mix of mulberry, loquat, peach, jujube, fig, cattley guava, various citrus, persimmon, and elderberry (maybe more) over story. The under story could be filled with shrub fruits or vegetables, the list could be endless. With a simple greenhouse, you could add some true tropicals like banana, avocados, papaya (all of which I have grown successfully outside, but would do better in a greenhouse. As an added benefit, visitors would be picking in shade instead of baking in the sun. For all investors, I take sats 😜.

One of the great applications of #JADAM Microbial Solution (JMS) is using forest soil to inoculate #compost piles with indigenous soil microorganisms. I believe it is absolutely essential for every home to have a pond. There are so many benefits a homeowner/gardener can receive from a pond.
1. Slow down and store storm water. Benefits the general public storm water systems downstream.
2. Mosquito control from fish (goldfish or otherwise). I do not feed my fish and just let them eat what lands in the pond.
3. Non-chlorinated water for general irrigation or water backup.
4. Aesthetics (mine could be prettier, working on it)
5. Learning opportunities for children.
6. Depending on how you build it, cost per gallon can be cheaper than rainwater collection tanks. (Mine was completely free)
7 months ago, I put up a rudimentary pond made from an old above ground pool to slow down and collect hurricane rains in an effort to hold off flooding adjacent to the house. Since then, I have realized the multitude of benefits and beauty that has come from the pond. I could go on and on, but I’ll make a separate post about different facets of #naturalponds.
