I suspect it's a debate because the US Government had technology transfer out to the private sector for decades and decades.
So the private sector takes that tech and expands on it to create markets. There is a reason why the internet grew, why GPS became a thing, and it isn't solely because the Government made the core tech - it's because the market found additional uses for the technology.
There are plenty of arguments for doing *both* things. There is a reason NASA still exists, thank goodness. But also the fact there are competing space organizations run by nation states gives impetus to both paths being followed.

at this point he theoretically pays his taxes. He's just not taxed on his values. I was just curious what Augie's take is on what would be expected of someone to do when they don't have the actual cash but they get taxed on a valuation.
Namely what valuation do we pick? When they mega-rich start to change the way they claim valuations to skirt the taxes, what do we do then to tax them on?

I generally agree with this type of tax. But I'm always curious, how do we propose that he pay it?
Would he need to be forced to sell Tesla shares to pay it out in cash? None of these uber rich dudes tend to have any actual assets to tax, just these arbitrarily made up valuations.
