A blackbird got in the greenhouse!! How on earth... anyway, opened the door wide while it scrambled and banged on windows, then went around so as to 'push' him towards the open door... made it! Free!
The community allotment, abandoned months ago, has been taken by the Comitee and is being sorted. Will volunteer to strim the orchard.
And was given a bike trailer! Smaller than the one I have but just as useful. Needs some attention.

Some storm damage on the way to the plot, Tremorfa park, two large trees, one on the path so had to take a detour. At the plot - apart from one thin metal sheet, wrenched out, 2 of the 3 tobacco plants snapped, or wrenched out, so straightened them and applied a cane support; have been gathering and drying leaves, planning to make cigarillos.
Annoyance nr1: at lidl a car was parked right in front of the bike's rack, which I found annoying, what with the half empty car park? Driver with disable badge and its allocated place full, what's wrong in parking over there? Bah!
Annoyance nr2: back at base, the corporation has had a new rubbish depot door, didn't need to, previous door was OK and they put the latch outside in, so can't open it from outside....
A while ago lost the key for that bin place; was asked £40 - forty! quid for a new one.... so borrowed the key from a neighbour and had a copy made for a tenner. So there.
Six months later, they replaced the key lock with a combination lock, OK, as you have it; worked fine but was badly installed, visible screws and wobbliness; lasted a year, then it was removed and left with a lock which doesn't lock, but opened from both sides.
Now this new door which does not open from outside.
I rest my case, ye corporate wasters. It being sunday have decided to stay in and do some cleaning.

Weird. There's one sunflower growing, about a foot, beans which aren't supposed to grow at this time of the year, broadbeans garlic and cauli growing, under attack by butterflies. Saw three dragonflies!
Robin, bluetits, coal tits and tree sparrows, one unidentified small grey bird, magpies and crows.
Tobacco now flowering.

As we are on a greenhouse topic, might as well put in that my greenhouse is doing well, despite some leaks, large semi trasparent plastic sheet replaced the (previously) shower panes which served as roof but were far too heavy. Top temperature in there clocked 36C a few days ago.
Maybe is too hot; the courgette plant, one of eight seeds, has fruits rotting on the stem, before they reach adulthood and can be eaten. darn! the rest... one single sunflower is being attacked by something, slug pellets have proved inneffective so it is something else.
Outdoors, broadbeans: planted forty beans and got 12 plants. These will be used for next crops. Other beans are groing but reluctantly, same for cabbage abd cauli; Unfunnilly other plotters are getting a much better crop, on the other hand I am not using any artificial anything other than a drop of liquid feed, they need it.
What is growing wondefully and profusely is weeds; weeds being anything growing out of the allotted place, basically. so within the boundaries am pulling up 'creepy willow;, horsetail, trying to keep it under control; not impossible but blimey.
Outside the hedge, they cease counting as weeds to become natural flora mostly native. Including brambles.

New plastic cover works but it gathers pockets of rain water which needs to be sorted.
Hundreds of buttercups and not an insect in sight.... a wood piece seems to have been visited by a woodpecker, by the looks of it.

Phew! Finished moving the horizontal roof beams to 3in down to go level with the beam, now to stretch the plastic sheet.
Resolved the watering set up, found a 3way attachment, one inlet 2 outlet so now can use the spray hose AND the nozzle at the same time. :0)
Beans seem contented if not actually happy, while the broadbeans carry on regardless of the weather.
Strawberries are growing nicely and are tasty! Courgette flowering, cauli and cabbage and carrots getting on, leeks and garlic also.
Break time now, too hot under the sunshine so am moving under the willow.

Some high haze to the north, unpleasantly breezy and quite nippy on the way to the plot.
Various Beans outside: trying to keep alive despite the night cold temperatures. Broadbeans going nicely, cabbage and cauliflower cranking on but slow. Strawberries growing but not as yet ripening, while indoors, ripening and delicious.
One courgette out of 8 seeds is now flowering, tomatoes are growing slow, a wood pigeon is drinking at the pond.
One of three tobacco seedlings seems to have survived, two others didn't, have some 30 others in the flat, where peppers planted a month ago have sprouted and are about to be planted in the greenhouse.
Need to bring the trimmer as weeds are on the attack.

Yesterday as I sat under the willow, taking my break, having a fag, a fly landed in my hand. Rubbed its proboscis, rubbed its wings, scuttled about a bit, flew off. Hovered a bit zipped here and there, another fly appeared and did the same.
It was bout twice the size of a standard house fly but was striped black and yellow, with nice patterns on the back.
Interesting.

Haven't seen 3 corner leeks
At the plot, made it to fix the trimmer, had a two hour go and two tanks of fuel, not finished yet.
Beans have survived a cold night, which is good. When putting them in the ground used what appears to be a very very large nail, off a wooden ship, who knows, to make a foot deep hole, to get through the weed suppressor, cardboard, then delicately insert the root up to the top. This way presumably the roots will stay in the wet, as it were.
Phew, so far. Am sitting in the shed having a cigarette.

Planted 20 odd spuds, all from a supermarket bag I'd forgotten I had couple months ago. All sprouted rootlets. Now the waiting game.
Grapes have started green shoots, most of the cuttings have taken. Weirdly, broadbeans are flowering but they are hardly 5 in tall . .. strawberries also fruiting though some have perished .
The rest growing in pots in the greenhouse.
Worked on the pond edges, lined the sides halfway down using three cloth pots, the sort used to move treelings about, cut lengthwise, the idea is to cover the plastic and maybe a frog will choose the place for froglets. Also filled the gaps between stones with stone scalping kindly donated by the plotter next door.

At the plot. It's raining in a variety of densities, no drizzle.
Stuff is growing despite the weather. Indoors, strawbs have gone mad and grow vertically .... well, so far.
Also various beans which will go outdoors later, still too cold for them.
Weirdly broadbeans are already flowering tho they're barely 15cm high.
I've bought a bag of them in a food shop and they originate from Iran, of all places.
Grapes are starting green shoots, lil carrots tops, leeks and garlic also. Spuds.
Nice.

Plot news, there you go. Realigned the boards of the growing areas, looks almost normal. Today redistributed cauli and cabbage, also carrots. While at it also distributed basil plants, lidl issue, indoors and outdoors.
Yesterday remade the entrance of the greenhouse, removed the lot and installed a large sheet of semi-transparent plastic. To hold it in place, added a chinese straw blind, just for fun. Works a marvel, temp inside reached 32C!
Also saw a Merlin, i think, dark grey top light brown underside, landed not 10 metres away and I didn't make it to take a good photo. Bah!
And so it plods along. As soon as I was planting the carrots a sluf showed up an quickly, slufgishly rather, made its slithery way to attack them. Failed.
Am off shortly, have to refit my road bike which is giving signs of tiredness.
I hate this wind, NNE. makes me feel nervous, jittery...

Arrived at the plot at 10am. Decided to get rid of the outside greenhouse enough of it, though I have the parts. Sort of.
Emptied 2 sacs of soil on the spuds area, moved half a dozen wood pieces, ready for the fire....
Found the fedeer empty, birds have discovered the way to remove the perches, in metal, from the plastic tube. Seeds poured out and were eaten.
Windy now, 24C in the glasshouse, filled in some gaps in the frames so as to reduce draft.
.
So far so good.

Yesterday did go to the plot where I spent a couple of hours; cold killed all the black turtle beans.
Filled the feeders, am making a mix of bird food bags; watered the strawberry in the hanging basket; did a fire to get rid of wood and while at it, roasted me some raw coffee.
While waiting for the fire to catch, wrote a few notes on the subject of roasting. Coffee.
Bought by mistake a while ago, a small bag of raw coffee, decided to give it a go roasting on an open fire, using a steel pan and wooden spoon. Turned out quite all right, am having now one such coffee, fresh grind, with a cardamom pod ground in for good measure; a spoon of standard honey.
As I had no idea how to proceed, other than having had in time immemorial an actual hand held coffee roaster... granma stuff.... this time got it half wrong, because put in all the beans; quickly they started browning, quicker than expected, so that to give them at least a shade of brown, most beans are well roasted, black, in fact. Scent not as strong as the coffee beans bought in shops, as for caffeine kick.... a double! YAY!!

Yesterday had a weird sighting. A blue tit landed in the perch of the plastic feeder, tapped the plastic, stopped, tapped again then picked up a large peanut and flew off.
Have been wondering if the bird made a free choice, that one instead of any of the hundreds of seeds available.
Otherwise fine, broadbeans are growing outdoors, am having a major burst of beans in the trays in the kitchen.
Borlotti, white, pinto and black turtle beans. Plus 5 different tomatoes one of which off the shelves of a known supermarket.
Also put up the glasshouse frame, work in progress.

I have a plan! :o) - the idea is to beat the blight; as spuds grow throughout the year - like cabbage and broadbeans - the idea is to plant them now to have them ready about June, as the blight - a fungus - does crop up around this time.. we'll see.

Yesterday did some landscaping at the plot, just tidying up. Made a new Bridge over the Ditch, using a small pallet and some lengths of artificial turf, cut that in half and made it narrower and longer.
Checked the broadbeans, ok, also garlic and leeks, ok. Spuds went in yesterday, the aldi variety, two months ago put two bags of new spuds in a dark container, added some water and let it be. They all sprouted.
While at it, a while ago found in the wood chips heap, a number of bark sections, large and small; so am using them to cover the newer ugly wood in the shed screweing them in to cover such sections; will work on it.
Meanwhile in the flat, trays are coming up with greenery: four variety of beans, onions, carrots, cauliflower and something else I forgot what. This morning had the disappointment of having a puncture on the bike attached to the trailer, so didn't take the stone slabs recovered (with permission) from an alley nearby.

Plot news: put a strawberry plant in a hanging basket, of all things... see what happens. Oddly, several strawberries survived the Winter.
Then proceeded to pick up and lay down several paving stones, donated by the bloke across the road, he's a groundsman and has a lot of stuff to get rid of. Covered one on the drain ditches.
Plucked 3 stray garlic from the glasshouse, planted them outside.

At the plot. Yes, raining, breezy verging to windy, NNW which is cold, still, a quick shopping mission, a call at the plot to check it out. Broadbeans still growing.
Was going to repair the barrow's wheel but can't because the beading is broken. BAH!!
Am using a non functional brewing machine of some sort to trigger root growth in spuds. Mad yes, still, working.

Plot news!
Soooo.... went in yesterday to find the broad beans survived and are growing. Also garlic and leeks. And weeds.
No, not that. A plotter gave me a large piece of plastic to refit the greenhouse in return I gave him 24 long canes and 10 broadbeans. Nice.
Today, plot activity consisted of repairing the wooden hedge, to consolidate the verticals used some steel bars normally used to hold that horrible safety sheets to be found in roadworks, they were here since years ago.
Then replaced a few thick and heavy glass on the glasshouse top, was leaking right on the one chair I have in there. Testing required.
So far so good, tomorrow more of this

Ben to the plot today, actually went out twice - once to the s'market, later to the plot; On the way up stopped and quidland and bough two compost bags; had the trailer with me, I mean on the bike, and placed them there, alongside two largish pots with a couple score broad bean saplings, which I found growing nicely in the flat after an absence of two weks or so. Previously had thrown a couple of handfuls into two pots and left them at it. I also found in the flat, in a hanging basket with depleted geraniums.... mushrooms. Yes mushrooms, small and brown dunno what they are and am not going to find out; some mushrooms are edible only once.
At the plot found it still whole, a couple of bits fell off the hedge which was to be expected.

Brrr!!! literally;
been to the plot for a visit and refill the feeders, every flooded area has half an inch - 1cm - of ice; not thick enough to walk on let alone skate.

At the plot saw a blackbird, a pigeon and three bluetits; on the way back spotted two sizeable slices of pine tree in a pile of wood shavings the local authority occasionally drops by- took them for kitchen use, just what I need. No not to eat.... as a chopping board!
Since I am at it, cycling back almost at base saw and recovered a stretched canvas! and yes, am going to re-use it.

Happy new year to you all...
Few hours at the plot again plan had it for refilling the feeders and have a rolly afterwards.
Turned into that yes, plus pulling up a young oak from a nearby location and replanting it within the plot. As there wre half a dozen cuttings, planted them as well along the hedge. They might grow.
A hawthorn pulled out and oak placed in the same place. Hawthorn went alongside the hedge as well.
And so it goes.

Took advantage of the impending storm and went to the plot. Didn't do any digging, everything is properly soaked but rearranged the greenhouse internal area. Removed some ugly but useful plastic panels which covered missing boards, replaced it with some floor boards of the artificial variety. Works better and looks better, for a contraption made of recovered parts.
Raining on and off, somewhat windy, 9.5C.

Went for a cycle ride to a place not far to see if they ant a few bike parts I have laying about and don't need; met a friend he told me to csll on thursday when the bike prson is there.
Then went to the plot to tidy up a bit, is moderately flooded, as by photos.
done that, returned, passed by aldi, bought some stuff including a sandwich for the homeless person sitting outside.

I spotted a woodpecker in flight, couple days ago, red end. Also am threatened with plot eviction because the Council claims I am not growing anything. They called when I wasn't there, missed the grape, garlic and leeks, say they want at least a third being cultivated, issued warning.
It's late autumn, they called in the wrong season.

Phew! A few hours at the plot. Repaired the brushcutter, went fo it with the results shown. While at it, found a small chilli plant loaded with fruits, growing where no chilli has grown before! Am wondering how did it get there.
More tomorrow, job's not finished.

his year, a couple of years after planting some cutting, got five grapes! five! small sweet and delicious.
To avoid the council's nosing - they come about once in a while to check that the plots are cultivated, or else is eviction, the grapevine will do the job perfectly; in a few years lol!
Today and yesterday have been busy repairing a few leaks in the greenhouse, refitting the external greenhouse, digging here and there, moving a lot of junk to be recycled, having a break and a cigarette; saw a dragonfly today, size some 3in at a guess as it didn't stop; the usual sparrowsects (as in sus-pects) feeding, found one of the feeders on the ground and empty. Also installed a section of metal net in a hole in the hedge right below the feeder, where feral cats waited for unweary birds to land. Few months ago, found a heap of pigeon feathers; since then a single pigeon shows up and hangs on a while, probably the partner.
Weather has been fine with some rain, hardly any wind and warm enough. More tomorrow.

Good day/afternoon/evening/night - depending on your time zone; plot news: here's a few shots of my recycling efforts; the greenhouse remade with used windows recovered from someone; inside view from a 100yo armchair next to the plant container wrapped in gauze, the tank itself is half a water tank made in fiberglass - so not hot water - while the sticks are sections of tent poles.
While at it also prepared a section of ground for more grapevine, and another section where I planted 20 leeks.

Phew! Morning at the plot, pulled up the grapes and separated them to be replanted singly at about an equal distance. Had four originally, now have 14, and a few still to go in.
Otherwise so far so good.

Slowly but surely greyness turned into thin haze with thin hazy blue. Clouds moved out of the way, lurking at the Southern horizon. 16C. Breezeless.
At the plot, after a desultory quick visit to a nearby supermarket, been clearing the growing areas of weeds, by hand.
Found two wild potatoes, didn't plant them myself, also a wild oak-let, probably dropped by crows. Also found five small grapes! Small sweet and delicious.
Also a few late and unknown chillies, have wrapped them up in thin white gauze to protect them from the cold.

And so it goes; another season another wetland-scape. Today at the plot the tide seemed to be rising, as by photo; should get me a dingy,
Anyway, managed to rescue a bunch of tomatoes before the blight got them - everything else in the way of toms and spuds is blighted, pity; have pulled out the sick plants and am going to burn them rather than place them in the compost heap, as the fungus would thrive.
Also picked the last of the various beams and bell peppers. From tomorrow is tidy up time, plot Winter lay out.

Have an apple tree which I thought was a crab apple, turns out it isn't, had one off the tree, the others are very small but still edible. Nice.
Bell peppers growing but still green, 8 of 'em, while the indoor tomatoes are beginning to show colour, turning yellow, maybe in a few weeks they'll be ripe.

At the plot pulling out weeds and failed beans. Preparing the plot for Winter. Oddly while most beans failed, not all did, have a kilo of black beans, while outside other beans are slowly ripening. Not so tomatoes and grapes. Did get 6 pears and ate them, yummy, the potted basil is going back in the flat alongside the chilly already there. While plucking the bath tub found some weird mushrooms.
And so it goes.

Here, time to clear the plot, put it in hibernation as it were. Spuds and various beans outdoors failed miserably grape didn't produce grapes, though a semi wild huge grapevine over by there is producing, though late to ripen. That's where I got the cuttings.
Searched and found the spare part for the brushcutter, £20, will try to get one later on.
Unrelated, am refitting an old girly bike for Future shopping trips.
Will report.

Plotting.... plotting plotting.... soo, tomatoes, most beans, chilli, not ripening. Doubt they'll do it over the following months... chillies might.
Picked the only 6 pears off the one small tree, ate one, ripe 'n' delicious. While at it, spotted a beautiful honey bee, flew close to my nose.
Weeded a lot outdoors, reduced leafage in both green/glass houses, dropped the cuttings in the compost bin, including weekly kitchen cutouts. Cutoffs. Bits and pieces. Am feeling vaguely poetic.

it's to release minerals on to the roots, one, the one i can't remember, accelerates growth. Also milk, yes, one litre in five of water, every two weeks or so. Liquid calcium.

After more than a week absence, at the plot stuff is growing but not ripening, oddly enough. Only the black beans are maturing, and have a pound weight of them, the rest still green, glasshouse and greenhouse. Something's wrong with the weather I think.
Anyway, watered the lot and weeded a little here and there. An oak I planted 5 years ago is producing nuts. Pear tree also, not ready yet.

Phew! Spent two hours sifting the contents of the older compost bin, using a sieve proper for gardening. Mixed that with a barrowful of soil I had in here for the purpose, removed several large and small glass shards, a few pottery shards, including two bits of melted glass and a few ballast stones.
Meanwhile beans and tomatoes grow very well, FYI tomatoes are from a shelf, vine variety, beans off bean bags also from another shop. Spuds have apparently failed. Chillies growing.
On the way to the plot spotted a few sunflowers growing around a tree on the road.
