This was the selling point of the Fediverse, but the Fediverse gives too much power to the servers. Also, identities can't really be transferred. With Nostr, identities aren’t centralized and individual relays don’t have that much power.

I guess what I’m trying to say is this: it’s probable that not everyone will be able to understand all that code. Even the ones who could (including me) would rather spend that significant amount of time doing something else. A better analogy would be a C compiler: you don’t need to read the code of a C compiler to be able to write C. If you had told programmers at the time that C was being adopted that they had to read and understand the compiler in order to use the language, they probably wouldn’t have used the language.
I’m not arguing that we should enstupidify Bitcoin. I’m against enstupidification of any sort. I’m saying that if we want “people” to use Bitcoin, we need to make it possible to understand without requiring weeks of study. If we want Bitcoin to be adopted, it has to be as easy to use as the fiat it’s replacing.

Not everyone can read code. Even if everyone could read code, not everyone would be able to read code of that complexity. Even among people who could read code of that complexity, do you think that they would all want to read all of that code? No. That's like rewriting code instead of using a library. It's unnecessarily repeated work. If we want Bitcoin to be adopted by the average person, it has to be usable by the average person.

Yup. From what I understand, Lightning channels are something like a wallet on the blockchain controlled by two Lightning nodes. There’s a total amount in the channel, and there’s also information about how much each party is entitled to. The fast payment aspect comes from the fact that the distribution of the funds in the channel can be changed by mutual agreement without needing to store this as a separate transaction.
Now, let’s say that you have a channel open with me, and I have a channel open with the person you want to send sats to. You give me sats from our channel, and in turn I give sats in my channel with your payee to your payee. I may also collect some small fee.
But to open a channel in the first place, you have to have some initial deposit, partly to pay for mining fees.
This is all just AFAICT, though.
