The newest officespeak in the office is "for your situational awareness" in place of the previous "for your information."
Very dumb. Situational awareness is for hunters, marines, bank robbers, rabbits that might be preyed upon by foxes. No one in an office has any situational awareness. Everyone is in a trance while staring at their emails.

People are ridiculous. There's a tribal culture forming on the local meshcore network that right now seems to consist of saying how weird the people on meshtastic are and how the vibes are bad

Let's say lab-grown meat became a well-established industry that produced a safe, sustainable product for an affordable price.
If a company sold ethically produced, lab-grown human steaks, would you try one?

@nprofile…mv7s i don't know. The last one that broke made a loud popping sound so i pulled over and saw the broken spoke. This time i was doing some maintenance and noticed the wheel wasn't running true. I have no idea how long it's been like that

Dreamt i was at a dinner party with a dancing competition. My partner and i decided to perform some song that was ostensibly from Grease, but since I've never seen Grease, it most have been something made up in the dream.
We got up in front of everyone and started dancing terribly, uncoordinated, not in step at all. I could see people starting to snicker and whisper to each other.
But it was all part of the act! As soon as our two characters found each other in the song and fell in love in the song, we began to dance really well. People realized what we had done and they gave us a standing ovation.
What a silly dream.

I want to teach a class on repurposing electronics. We could start out just taking some broken things apart and seeing if we can fix them, but every student would have to pick something to repurpose or revive as a semester-long project. Maybe they want to turn an old propane lantern into an LED lantern, convert a cordless drill with dead nicad batteries to lithium, or jailbreak an e-bike. Everyone should leave the class with a device or appliance with a new lease on life. A community college should hire me for this

I don't trust people who don't like cats.
(Before I get a lot of arguments here, not liking cats is not the same as avoiding them because you're allergic).
I don't trust people who don't like cats because the reason almost always boils down to some variation of cats not being obedient and unfailingly fawning. It feels like a personality litmus test if your requirement for enjoying a creature is that it must always obey you and adore you.
(And before I get a lot of other arguments, being neutral on cats is not the same as not liking cats. I specifically mean people who say, "I don't like cats")

Super weird thing going on this morning!
The cat brought in another one of those sphinx moths and was chasing it around the house just before dawn.
It appears to have brushed against the window in a couple places, leaving moth fuzz behind. Now that I'm up, I see that ants have gathered in the spots that the moth touched. They are not carrying anything away like it's something for them to eat. They're just sitting there on those spots!

A woman was outside the grocery store struggling to move her shopping car that was stuck because two of the wheels were locked
I remembered the website! So I put my phone near the wheels and played the sound. The wheels unlocked like magic. She was very happy. So cool.

E-bikes are cool and game-changing for some people, but if you think they are the transportation answer for most people, you probably live in a very walkable/bikeable city, work from home or live very near your work, and don't have kids or others who depend on you to take them places or pick them up.
Let's have a little more remembering that our lived experience is not necessarily the same as the lived experience of others and that simple solutions are never one-size-fits all.

I visited my parents tonight and my mom wanted to show me something on her phone.
She has a group chat with some of her cousins and her sister. One of her cousins has Meta AI installed on her phone, and the app is "summarizing" their conversations for her.
Since it's AI, the summaries are completely worthless and and incorrect. My mom had been telling the chat that she and my dad took their ebikes to Santa Barbara for the day.
The AI summary told her cousin that my mom and dad went to Santa Barbara and that my aunt and uncle invited themselves and joined them there. None of that happened. My aunt and uncle did not invite themselves. They did not go to Santa Barbara.

Did you ever wonder why 'calculus' refers both to a type of math and the plaque deposits that form on teeth? I have, so I looked it up.
Both come from the Latin word calx, meaning limestone.
The term came to be associated with math through the use of stones or pebbles for counting.
It came to be associated with dental plaque because its a stony material that forms on teeth. (It's also used for other mineralized secretions of the body, like kidney stones).
So, there it is. Calculus is counting with rocks. Calculus is rocks on your teeth.

If this doesn't already exist, it should.
There should be a recipe substitutions website where you can type in an ingredient and find the next best thing.
For example, I don't live somewhere I can get andouille sausage, but every cajun recipe calls for it.
So, what should I use instead? Loganiza? Polska kielbasa?
Sometimes I choose the loganiza and sometimes the kielbasa, but a website to tell me what to do would be great.

It sucks that Joann's is closing all its stores, but I'm not really that sad. They were always out of stock of whatever I needed, it took forever to get someone to cut fabric, and they always seemed to have just a single cashier working, so the checkout line always took forever.

The local paper of record breathlessly describes a new restaurant as having "lines down the block."
Nothing could make me want to avoid a place more than waiting in long lines and it being the hot new place in town everyone wants to be.

Dreamt a long and wild dream about a near post-apocalyptic future in which the remains of society either fell in line under a high-tech authoritarian government or cloistered themselves in simple, back-to-basic low-tech communities.
The main character of this dream was a former assassin for the government played by John Hamm, who was being hunted across the landscape by other government agents and assassins because he decided he didn't want to be part of that life anymore.
It was pretty standard action movie thriller stuff other than one notable detail: John Hamm's character was finally caught by his pursuers because he was unaware he had been given a prince albert piercing that was a tracking device.

Another tale from this tech-driven hell we're living in:
A coworker who was evacuated from his home because of the fires last month is living in a short-term rental until he and his family can move home.
The rental has only digital door locks with a touch screen for entering your pin number. He's been locked out of his rental house in the rain for a half hour because the touch screen of the digital door lock is wet from the rain and ignoring his touches.
There is no physical key for unlocking the doors. You can only open them electronically -- with electronics that don't work in the rain.

My brother works at a healthcare facility that recently unveiled a bunch of new, time-consuming, and complicated procedures for sterilizing equipment.
The equipment techs have been complaining because the procedures are, in their opinion, stupid.
The organization they work for cited a research paper that said these procedures reduce infection rates.
My brother, however, has a science background, and knows how to read a peer-reviewed paper.
He found the paper they cited, and it does say that these procedures will reduce infection rates, and it cites another paper as its source for that.
He found that paper and read it. It cites another paper in making that claim.
He found that paper. It had cited a previous paper. So he found that one.
He traced this claim all the way back to its original paper, which doesn't even make that claim. These procedures were just mentioned in the paper as something that *could* possibly reduce infections, but that they would need to be tested to know for sure.
They weren't tested. A series of authors just kept citing the author before them, each making the claim a little more firmly until it was stated as a proven fact.

How do people maintain dwellings that look like they've been created as a showcase for a furniture retailer? Like, everything is perfectly arranged and without a speck of dust or any clutter that isn't carefully curated.
Don't these people live in their spaces? Living is messy!
