This is mostly for @nprofile…3mmw It looks like the Bulgarian couple being prosecuted for harrassing/attacking a girl in Dundee are not the same Bulgarian man and woman who were attacked in return by the girl with a knife.
This is why much of the reporting of it was so confused.
People being prosecuted: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c394vjzrwwjo
People who were attacked: https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/news/5323284/dundee-knife-incident-reporting-the-facts/

Are they definitely there overnight, though? Some homeless-but-not-rough-sleepers sit begging (even in sleeping bags) during the day.
And some people are trafficked and placed in positions in towns to beg, being taken there by bus each morning and collected in the evening. Sometimes their traffickers rotate them, to try people in different spots. It’s a new reason to only ask if people need anything from the shop, and never to give them money. It’s also a reason to make conversation with them and offer assistance (which they will refuse), especially if it is a young woman who is more likely to tell you things by mistake in my experience, because then you can report the trafficking to crimestoppers and hopefully get them some help.

There’s also five survivors who’ve said they will quit if Jess Phillips stands down from the role.
There are people who have been gunning for Phillips her entire career, because she has always talked about male violence and femicide. They have always spoken of her with the contempt that men use to speak of women who bring this stuff up: she’s stupid, she should talk about other types of men only, she’s unfit for the job, etc. That is the background noise of most political media talking about her for her entire career, because she opposes male violence and speaks out against it. Most political media, and most political social media, is very male. And, of course, the angry men of the so-called ‘Labour Left’ hate her, because she didn’t support Corbyn.
If she ‘bravely’ speaks out against Islam or makes some comment about different cultures and patterns, and she loses her ‘job’ as an MP for Birmingham, it isn’t just her losing her job: all the women of Birmingham lose her as an MP, and some crazed Islamist man gets in. Who does that help? This is a different sort of decision to making a decision about your own career and life. Staying in her role, running for election, being credible political opposition, is taking a risk with her life. This isn’t hypothetical.
Based on comments Phillips made in interview with Helen Lewis, for which she got a ridiculous amount of flak, I’m pretty sure Phillips is capable of letting the inquiry go where it needs to and finding the truth, even if the way any conclusion gets written up has to be couched in careful language: this is how you get it done. She grew up in Birmingham: she knows. Also, consider again her not supporting Corbyn: she is not in that mindless group.
If Jess Phillips stands down from this role, I don’t think there’s anyone else who can be found who is capable of the role and willing to put themselves out there. The inquiry will collapse, and who will benefit? Everyone who would be implicated by the inquiry will benefit, as will media who benefit from chaos and anger, and bored people online who like exciting outrage to get angry about but who don’t really care about the issues. And, of course, the violent wife-beaters who march in things like ‘Britain First’ will benefit, because they can pretend this is about the establishment covering it up: they’ve always hated women like Jess Phillips, who talk about male violence and try to do something about it. And all the men who have spent her entire career saying how much they hate the stupid bitch for talking about male violence. And all the angry men of ‘Momentum’, who hated her opposing Corbyn and want revenge.

Oh! This is the thing where the admins at Bluesky have finally had enough of the bizarre, fragile, angry mob that fill their site, and are mocking them in hopes that they go away and let them have something resembling a normal website? And because this crowd is so reactive, it is sufficient to say the word ‘waffles’ to whip them into a frenzied rage?

It’s ‘making fun of gender roles’ in as much as they think of ‘women’ as ‘a gender role’.
I have been baffled by people treating drag as something edgy, cool, transgressive. It makes me think of rugby guys dressing up as girls at every opportunity, for every party and every night out, because that’s how cool manly guys bond with other men. It makes me think of every single mixed nerd group having ‘tarts and vicars’ parties that just become ‘tarts’ parties, because all the nerdy men want to wear fishnets and miniskirts with big fake boobs, because they think that’s sexy and so crazy, and look how degenerate I am! It makes me think of every single old comedy TV show which worked in men dressing up as women, because what could be funnier? But also they wanted to play the roles themselves. And it makes me think of traditional pantomimes that grandparents take the children to, with old washed-up soap stars pretending to be Widow Twanky, hilariously still experiencing sexual attraction despite being old and ugly.
It is so intensely uncool. It’s like if the media kept trying to tell me Morris Dancing was cool and edgy, and I say this as someone who quite likes a bit of Morris Dancing in moderation.

This is the second you’ve posted with cat tails as moustaches! I love it: is it a general theme (cat tails) people have gone with, or is it just these ones?
I sometimes wonder if I should get Instagram, just for checking things like Inktober, but I know I would regret it in the end.

The super easy thing I made a lot last year, and then realised was basically ratatouille with some extras, is roasted in the oven. Chop the veg up, unless you have cherry tomatoes. Put in a suitable roasting pan. Add some black olives. Add a tin of anchovies, chopped (I cut them with scissors). Drizzle with olive oil and stir, so it all gets coated. Put in a medium oven.
After about 20 minutes, stir it all and put it back in for another 20 minutes. The anchovies dissolve in the juices, so they just add saltiness and umami.
Eat with thick slices of bread, or tear chunks off a loaf of crusty bread.

I’m so confused. Are we supposed to be reading “we will have to more strictly triage so as only to arrest the more severe cases that involve actual realistic threats of harm” as some sort of downside?
I have been swamped with work lately, and I have lost track of what is actual stupidity and what is people mocking it. Surely this isn’t really what the Met commissioner said?

Anyone who is unfamiliar with Curtis Yarvin/Moldbug and trying to make sense of this stuff, should probably look up what he wrote. Not as an endorsement of him or his views (either now or in the past), but because his writing has fed in to a lot of what is going on.
It is not at all original to point out that a lot of what is going down is stuff that Yarvin described when he was arguing for a dictator to take over and rework the American government, and that also it is going down more along the lines of how he said it could go wrong if you didn’t get the right groundwork in place first and didn’t have the right person, and also that he has been involved with it. It is all very peculiar.

Unless she’s spending basically all her time eating, probably not.
We did once have a cat who discovered they really liked the dry food the cattery offered completely freely, and we returned after two weeks to find they had visibly put on weight. A combination of them being much less active than usual (this was a cat who typically spent their days breaking into local businesses and scaling buildings) and doing almost nothing other than eating this new food which was endlessly supplied.
If you’re at least roughly following the recommendations of the cat’s owner and/or what the packets say, you should be okay. If you’re pouring endless food into a non-stop eating machine, less so.

If serious, and long-term, weigh the cat. The Physicist weighs the cat regularly, graphs the result, and adjusts the input to match the desired output. They contact the Engineer, expecting a lovely PID model to help them keep the cat’s weight steady. The Engineer looks at the packets of food, then looks up the manufacturer’s recommended daily serving by weight of cat.

:( Although Cat is envious of your Metacam. Since my vet (the only local one with positive reviews rather than warnings) was eaten by a chain, they only prescribe Arthrocam, which doesn’t taste of honey. Cat would happily lick up Metacam as I squirted it, but has to be persuaded with Arthrocam.
When I was hand-feeding Cat the jelly from catfood just to get something in her stomach, I had to do the horrible squirting it into her mouth at times. She seems to not mind it squirted on her wet food now, but as you know that only works when they’re eating all the affected food.
Good luck with the bread.

This kid is what? 12? 13? And correctly arguing that she is still affected by misogyny and the issues that go with being a woman, which her ‘identity’ does nothing to avoid. She is also claiming to be a man, but has the defence that she is literally a child surrounded by people telling her that this is so.
She needs help and, yes, my feminism includes her. My feminism includes the girls identifying as boys, as men, and as non-binary, just as it includes the other women I disagree with and who do harmful things to themselves that reinforce patriarchy.

I’m still kind of sitting with the Childlight report which suggests about 11% of men are attracted to children and about 11% of men have committed offenses against them. It looks to me, based only on the processed data they reported, like the more a man is online, the more likely he is to be sexually attracted to children. Maybe men simply cannot cope with the internet?

That is interesting. I think it’s much less friendly and fun to edit it, these days, and the entrenched people are really entrenched. Even 10 years ago, I remember having a conversation with someone who thought of themselves as very into it, and they didn’t understand why un-logged-in edits were allowed, and they thought vandals never became proper editors. I remember thinking that this was the end of the Wikipedia culture that I had loved earlier on, and that it would slowly lose editors and die. The whole system depends on a mass of vaguely interested people invested in the joy of sharing knowledge, in large enough numbers and with wide enough perspectives that it all sort of works out.

I think it’s reasonable for people to take their religious festivals off. People do need to be more sensible around the pretence that we don’t know when Eid will be in advance, though. Plan ahead for when we, in fact, know it will be, even if you have to talk in terms of ‘probably’ or ‘maybe’: this is not rocket science.

Do you have the more recent one (within the last decade, maybe last 5 years) with the man typing a blogpost or article about how the gender wage gap doesn’t really exist because it disappears if you account for the time women take off work, and in the background his wife is wrangling the children.
