The materials are not only cheaper, the process can be done continuously, and the subproducts (magnesium hydroxide) can be used to make hydrochloric acid. It's all upsides with this process. Okay, now I really wanna do it :blobhyperthinkfast:

Electrochemistry wednesday. I now get why a membrane is needed to make sulfuric acid out of magnesium sulfate.
I was reluctant to even study the process because of the added complexity of the membrane, but the cost of copper sulfate made me reconsider. It's 10 times as expensive :cirnoshock:
Now that I've given it a check I think it's a better fit for escalation. The process is actually just water electrolysis and because of the membrane the protons and hydroxide make acids and bases on the anode and cathode, respectively. The sulfuric acid should be physically isolated from the magnesium hydroxide, so I could apply Le Chatelier's principle and extract both of them to push the global reaction towards the production of both of them, and also add more magnesium sulfate to keep the reaction going. This would make it a continuous process instead of a batch one. Pretty cool!
That wouldn't have been feasible with copper sulfate since all the ions are mixed together and you'd have to cut the reaction short and separate them through distillation, or wait for infinity until the reaction finishes.... yeah. I guess only the former is a realistic option.

I only experimented with niri for a few days, but coming back to i3 made me realize not how well things work in x11, but how specific is my workflow and how I don't really want to try to replicate it elsewhere again :cirnostare:
