Relating to the above: I'm the opposite of the average student. I love to learn and I love to teach, but my academic performance is terrible because I don't do the grunt work. Perhaps more of a knowledge communicator than a hardworking engineer or scientist.

I don't think most parents truly care that the kid is a repository of knowledge or that their grades are good.
What they care about is that the kid has a good life. If school didn't exist, but being able to make balloon animals was an important job qualification and indicator of success, that's what parents would want for their children.
I suspect that scholars sometimes forget about this, because they love knowledge for knowledge's sake. They have a philo - love - for Sophia - the goddess of wisdom. They're philosophers, in other words.

Last week was depressing. My gym buddy was sick the whole week, so I didn't get to see him. I didn't have any help around the house. Very few people to talk to. Meanwhile, on the 17th, the whole country was celebrating Constitution Day. Sunday was probably the best day because I went to the Sunday Market at the Strykejernet art school.

They sell bread like this at the local corner store. Turkish sourdough bread, they call it. It reminds me a bit of the best French bread. Doesn't quite reach up, but is miles ahead of what I can get at the nearest supermarket or bakery.

A question I found surprisingly hard to answer when I was asked about it the other day.
Sounds worth taking some notes on. Because it's the opposite of problem solving. It's asking you to use your imagination boundlessly.
Many things that people wish for in life are really just solutions to problems. So, assuming that all your problems are already solved, or are easily solved, what comes next?

The cost of running a Mastodon instance:
1 TB of storage (an outrageous amount of storage if you ask me) is what you need for 35 active users, and it'll cost you €14/mo at Scaleway (European cloud provider). On top of that comes €38/mo for the web server, counting in at €52/mo.

You know, many people are good at churning out long texts. The thing is, you can do that, and end up with something that no one wants to read. A friend of mine wrote a dissertation for his master's degree and he passed with that. But (and I love you buddy, don't get me wrong) it wasn't good writing. No one would want to read that. It satisfied the requirements for the degree, but it was not an enjoyable text.

Reminder that the ARM processor - which now dominates the mobile market completely - was originally a British design. Europe is far from being an insignificant player in tech, even if it doesn't have the most successful consumer products. May I also remind you that the KiCad CAD software was designed at CERN, Switzerland and is used by companies all over the world to design printed circuit boards?

Fire alarm in the condo. Went down to the lobby and checked which apartment unit triggered the fire alarm. Then went and found that apartment. Someone knocked the door and the tenant opened. There is no fire there. False alarm. I went upstairs again. As tenants, we can't make the alarm stop. Someone has to come here and do that, unfortunately. If I had the keys to that system, I would have stopped it. The landlord should pay ME for living here.

Man, it doesn't take much to disrupt public transportation in Oslo these days. A little bit of snow and buses, trains and trams get stuck. What is going ON? This is NORWAY. There isn't even all that much snow, and all the systems are failing. The tram I'm in can't move because the automated door system is glitching. It doesn't like the snow and cold. Everything is fine, mechanically speaking. Buses can't climb hills because we made good winter tires illegal. Jesus Christ. 🙄

This prime minister's cabinet has been marred by scandals.
Sandra Borch was just added to an ever longer list of ministers who have had to resign.
She was the Minister of Research and Higher Education until she resigned today, after news site e24.no discovered that her old master's thesis contained plagiarisms. She had used excerpts of other master's theses without citing them.
Especially embarrassing for a minister who has focused heavily on combating plagiarism.
She held a short press conference this evening at 8 where she resigned, apologised and left without answering any questions.

I was never big on jars. We didn't use them much at home. But I buy a lot of pickles and kept throwing these perfectly good airtight glass jars away. I figured I might as well use them for something practical. I'm finding some satisfaction in storing things in jars.

Modern pop songs sound really basic.
While pop songs have always "sounded basic", there was a period lasting from the 1950s and into the 2000s where music recordings were more elaborate.
You might call it the Studio Age, because it was a time when most music was recorded in professional studios on fairly spacious budgets.
