Enjoying the quiet and making time to read "Practicing Social Ecology" this morning. It's the first book I'm reading as part of this #solarpunk group that's started in my community. There's only a few of us, but I really like the vibe and the book is interesting too.
The author touches on the Occupy Movement of the 2010's, also the 1980's Greens. I normally don't enjoy nonfiction bc I work in a technical field and reading more nonfiction feels like a chore, but this one is manageable.

I knew there was a turning point somewhere. Their coverage of the 2000 election was banal, but I thought maybe I missed some broadcasts or something 🤷🏻‍♂️ I didn't listen as much after that. I started listening again in 2008-2010, to catch up with world news after finishing grad school, but it would just piss me off if I listened to it for more than 10 minutes at a time, so now I generally don't. Sometimes on a long drive I dare myself, still.

To their credit, and to your point about their target audience, NPR was one of the few places with balanced takes on renewable energy so they did a better job covering that - albeit more likely to be found on international broadcasts or late nite, offbeat listener hours. The rest of the time the framing was more like, "Republicans recognize younger voters believe climate change is real, but how can Dems make paying more taxes while being roasted alive more appealing?"

I have a DINO Rep (MGP) in my district WA-3 that's as bad, just got reelected because the alternative (a far-right MAGA) is debatably worse. I was one of really pretty few grassroots donors that helped her get elected in 2022, running on a Bernie-lite platform of free trade schools and refusing corporate donations... but not AIPAC or corporate PAC donations, apparently.
I feel your pain. We need to flush these hobgoblins out of government!

A simple majority (51 out of 100) votes is all that's needed, the Senate Rethuglicans already have that even without Gallegos, Fetterman, Kaine, Kelly, or any other rotating villains. wow. So Portland's tax dollars are paying for a prosecutor who is arguing only evidence that makes their client (on behalf of The State) look good and decent. Maybe not unpredictable, they're going to try whatever they can I imagine, but that seems... I honestly don't know, not my domain, just a former longtime Portland resident here. I'm wondering if there's any point in going to the unmasked urgent care clinic. I don't really have the money for a bird flu PCR, nor do I know what it would change. If it gets really bad I'll go, but right now I don't feel deathly ill. The H5N1 shows up as Flu A on the antigen test, PCR would be the only way to confirm it. I'm not sure if public health covers the cost of the test or not. Treatment is the same either way, rest and fluids. Sigh 😔

I know I'm supposed to be shocked and enraged at Trump, but it's not like the current administration (Biden's, a Dem administration) has been heeding the WHO's guidance wrt the pandemic they tried to disappear in 2022. Easily half the office was coughing again today, including the CEO with a dry persistent hack. Last week, most of them were out of office working remotely. Per the usual, I was the only one in a respirator.
My brunchcycle club is delightfully oblivious to how much illness (seasonal resp and otherwise) we have in the community right now, most of them also remote, so they're just hopping from one dining venue to the next as we approach the Xmas finale.
No shitty mask remarks today, at least 😑

I have no shortage of stories of healthy friends and family developing really shitty health following even just one infection, most were vaccinated but some were hit before vaccines were even available.
At my work, I would routinely review patient charts documenting their downward spiral in health btwn 2019-2024. Meanwhile, my tech lead would be posting selfie-videos of themselves in crowded bars... And then was out sick, like clockwork 😒

people's eyes get wide when I mention I lost my sense of smell for a few months. It was really weird and somewhere between dangerous and inconvenient in terms of food prep (is this spoiled? is something burning?) and camping (is the fire completely out? what's the stuff that spilled in the cooler?).
I do not want a repeat of that, mild strokes, immune dysregulation, and tachycardia aside.

Status update:
Last night I ate some kimchi, drank some water, and it warmed me right up, the vague symptoms went away.
This morning I did the RFT swabby swab for [redacted virus name] and it was negative, I checked because some have described their experience was like hay fever. The one time I definitely had it, my experience was like a bad cold for a couple of days plus losing my sense of smell for three months.
Hmm. There is an air quality alert in my region this week, maybe related?

I hope I'm not getting sick. Could just be low grade anxiety and emotional fatigue, with a chapped nose from being out in the cold air, no resp symptoms.
Seeing far fewer masks lately, even fewer than the very few I normally see in public around here, and the number of coughers (including some presumably fake coughers) has been considerable, anecdotally.
COVID wastewater levels continue to be at a nadir locally, but clearly other bugs are circulating too.

I took a quick peek and noticed turnout to date was pretty low so far in my suburb. Majority of people vote by mail, it was like 54% this morning compared to about 85% in 2020 when Biden won by a margin of 5:4. It's higher than at midterms in 2022, which came in at about 43% so it's possible our MAGA-voting DINO will eek out a slight win again based on turnout alone, otherwise we'll have an actual MAGA representing the district.

a friend of mine is evacuating from St Petersburg and a colleague in Clearwater has been radio silent for over a week. It seems like a pretty big deal. But we're also experiencing the biggest public health/safety misinformation and gaslighting campaign of our lifetimes, so it's hard to know what to believe. Y'know? The lack of trust in public institutions is a negative feedback loop with bad faith players (congressional seditionists, "centrists", corrupt surgeon generals, etc.).

There's a lot of disenfranchisement and disappointment in those (white, poor, underserved) communities that's soooo easy for bad faith players to manipulate and transform into "politics". My anecdotal observation has been the "good" players that want things like medicine, education, nutrition, etc., for their communities are dismissed or terrorized into dropping out before they even get on a ballot, so only the "bad" win.

I have not! I read the summary and it sounds pretty familiar to what my lived experience in a conservative US suburb is like-- the ammosexuals, women-hating incels, violence as a religion, a culture thriving on playing victim, etc.
I've been trying to get into an Orson Scott Card sci-fi series but it's not as captivating as I might have hoped, so maybe I'll check if the library has a copy of this book. Are there any actions the author proposes? Turning off Fox News seems obvious 🙄

We saw a lot of chuds shooting guns out at Tillamook State Forest yesterday, a couple of them even had gas masks. I'm assuming they're getting ready for "something big" where they're expecting they'll need gas protection, maybe some "antifa" protest they usually seem to turn up at. Anyone's guess how many of them were off-duty cops. Nearly all were portly 30 to 50-something portly white men with very large trucks. Just another day in #conservativeAmerica 🤷🏻‍♂️

I learned about the #FarmBill today, and the pieces snapped into place why my district's #DINO is so vociferously championing what she's been pitching as a bit of "progressive" policy for impoverished rural #WA3 children.
It turns out MGP's biggest donor outside of #AIPAC is the #sugarlobby. She's been working on legislation to ensure more SNAP is earmarked for processed sugary foods, which is both bad for public health and props up #bigag corn interests (who in turn produce HFCS).

it is often used to treat depression, but it also makes people (and presumably some other animals, too) photosensitive. I tried some St John's wort tincture in college, took a couple weeks to take effect, and can confirm it helped lift my mood but also made even overcast sunlight too bright outdoors, so I stopped taking it.
