- they made Apple remove #deltachat iOS for mainland china
- their great firewall appears to block some #chatmail relays

#deltachat user profiles are private and invisible to the public. No one can discover you, or your children, via phone numbers or any other public handle. Chat profiles exist only on user devices. No PIN and no "SMS verification code" ever asked or needed.
The lack of "public discovery" also means you don't auto-discover others via phone numbers or other public handles. Getting in contact with others is "opt in": you scan a QR code or click an invite link to join a group or open a chat.

@nprofile…s63u If you add multiple relays to your profile and change between them, you will appear as the same contact, both in 1:1 and group chats. Internally since Delta Chat v2 all contacts in encrypted chats (the ones not marked with an envelope icon) are identified by their OpenPGP key, and it does not matter from which email address the message arrives, so when you switch to another address your contacts will likely not even notice unless they look in debug info.

@nprofile…s63u You can switch the sending relay at any time. If you send a message and sending gets stuck because the sending relay is not reachable, you can select another relay for sending and keep sending messages. There is no automatic "failover" yet.

From Android, if you go to the second relay page (https://mehl.cloud/) and click on the QR code (with the "Einen kostenlosen Email-Account bekommen" alt text), this will open Delta Chat, possibly ask you to unlock the phone, and add a relay to the currently selected account.

This morning nine.testrun.org was briefly unavailable, some network problem. A good time to remind everyone to add a second relay to your #deltachat app:
1. Go to https://chatmail.at/relays randomly choose one of the listed relay pages and copy the invitation code to your clipboard
2. In delta chat settings go to advanced/relays and tap "add relay" and paste the invitation code
3. That's it.
If one relay is unavailable you still can receive and send messages.

What distinguishes #deltachat from #xmpp is that one is a cross-platform mass-user focused app with a consistent UX across the platforms and using standards under the hood, while the other is a set of specs with many different implementations and UX approaches on the various platforms, and sometimes tenuous compatibility between them.

What if all public funding and all private donations to our efforts stop tomorrow?
Users should be fine for years thanks to the wonderful world-wide community of #chatmail relay operators 💜 Relays are dirt cheap to run. Also, our developments are much cheaper and less complex compared to what we know from comparable efforts.
No worries though!
We currently have moneys to help sustain ~15 contributors, with a sum similar to what other projects pay for their foundation president/CEO alone :)

@nprofile…063m we are lightly following its developments but are not impressed by its UI/UX, and also don't think they particularly care for resilience (they are blocked since >15 months in russia, and don't do much about it, for example), also they don't appear to care much for people with small data plans and bad networks, and rather tune everything for resource-rich always-connected users. They also appear to be going down the crypto-coin rabbithole quite a bit. YMMV.

End-to-End Encryption is good but metadata protection counts as much. Names, group descriptions and memberships, avatars, who talks to whom ...
Both #deltachat and #signal go to great length to protect all the metadata that WhatsApp grants itself gratuitously. #Matrix stores similar scales of metadata on their servers, even if you can choose which server stores it.
Everything is better than #Telegram which additionally stores message contents in all group chats/channels and most 1:1 chats.

We do have discussions to re-introduce email addresses for this use (tell someone your contact address and that's it, no QRs, weird links etc.) but it will be about establishing end-to-end encryption. It's not a current prio but it's definitely something that we can think about and do. FWIW https://securejoin.delta.chat already implements automatic secure hand-shaking for establishing E2EE.

Our strong focus on end to end encryption and zero metadata does mean that one of the original project notions of "you can use delta chat as a lightweight cleartext email client and your contacts don't need to care" was deprioritized since some time now and remains available rather for specialists only. It used to be encrypted mail that was hard to do and only for experts. Delta kind of reversed this. Now it's hard to do cleartext. But you can self host your mailbox addresses. No changes there!

While platforms like #Matrix or #Signal manage user identities on a server, #DeltaChat and #Chatmail are not platforms in the classic sense. #deltachat does
- no bindings to public handles/numbers
- no address-book upload
- not do public contact or group discovery
- not have critical persistent server state (!)
Social identification is private, between people though ephemeral #P2P #E2EE messages.
Servers see messages with random sender and recipient addresses, but those can not be mapped to a phone number or public handle. Servers see IP addresses. But you can use Tor, or a VPN, if you want to hide that.
It' not all bad :)

PSA We are happy about the wealth of privacy focused classic email providers (proton, tutanota, posteo, mailbox.org etc) but they are not geared for instant secure messaging. Do yourself, family and friends a favor and use delta with any of the many https://chatmail.at/relays
Or setup a relay of your own if you feel like it.
Or use a a dedicated chat email address on your own or any classic email server that has reliable service and no obnoxious rate limits or annoying spam handling.

Relax 😎! GPG is not OpenPGP!
Yesterday, vulnerabilities were published https://gpg.fail but they don't affect #deltachat or any other #chatmail client because
A) We never used #gnupg for anything; we use the modern #rustlang #openpgp implementation @nprofile…z5vf, security audited multiple times.
B) #openpgp is fine, as modernized in #RFC9580, which already warns against several #gpgfail issues (gpg has not implemented that spec)

XMPP is also used under the hood in tons of products needing instant messaging even if they are not advertised as XMPP clients, or do not federate. But look at #Matrix, only 25% of matrix servers federate.
Anyway, all three share a strong focus on protocols, but there is a big difference: https://chatmail.at does not expose protocols to client developers, just a Rust SDK.

And even if we get that working, there are some relays with which it probably could not communicate, because they can only speak IPv4. So I don't think IPv6-only is worthwhile to pursue.

Still some road blocks on some of the ~15 store targets, but that's normal. There is always one or another release target making new problems, compliance, build problems or some crash on particular devices. We are trying our best to push it all out :)

On this day, two years ago, we published the first chatmail relay, https://delta.chat/en/2023-12-13-chatmail along with templates to replicate the setup, without needing any permission. Two weeks ago we thought there are 60 relays when a hacker handed in a 100+ list 😂
A bunch of knowledgeable folks are maintaining track of health of the evolving global network, and supporting new operators. 💜💥🖤

@nprofile…t6aw yes, it's not currently limited but don't do more than 3 or max 5. There is no point, and your device will keep open as many network connections. If all your three relays die, you can still add another one then, send a message to your chats, and are in the chat game again.

It's just that the last weeks were a lot of work for everyone involved, and we still need to stay attentive/co-ordinate about any issues in conjunction with rolling 2.33 releaeses (it's more complicated than you might think). Originally, we only wanted to publically talk/educate about it when the releases are fully available for people. Maybe just check back next week :)

@nprofile…zshd unencrypted email use cases have been discussed in the support forum already and the outcome is: our focus is on end-to-end encryption and metadata minimization, along with helping to grow a world-wide federated reliable chatmail relay network run by many 3rd parties.
Instead of sticking to the old 1.58 delta versions it'd likely be better if you recommended your friends to use another email app that directly focuses on unencrypted mail handling if that is what you are looking for.

- easiest onboarding ever; not depending on phone numbers or other private data
- support for multiple chat profiles/identities
- decentralized servers, not depending on US-based GAFAM etc.

#Telegram has a nice and fast UI, granted.
But the 1 billion people using TG are at risk because of its big central database that any state security service craves for. Moreover, several anonymization proxy-bot offerings were hacked in 2024, identifying millions of users and content.
#deltachat builds anonymization directly into the app and has pervasive end-to-end encryption. #chatmail relay operators can sleep well, knowing they have nothing. Ergo, E2EE is good for any operators sleep! :)

If the problem boils down to the users allowing UnifiedPush client to run and denying the same permission to Delta Chat, then it is not interesting to spend development effort on it as the problem can be solved by allowing DC to run in the background. We do support FCM (besides Ubuntu Touch and Apple) notifications for the phones that do not allow to run apps in background, but there you cannot run UnifiedPush as well.

#chatmail does secure email federation that works. Using lean "relay" servers that enforce metadata-minimized end-to-end encryption.
There is a new little tool that checks whether two relays are interacting well for messaging, and how fast. You need a terminal window and be able to execute:
pip install cmping
you can then run for example:

#deltachat apps are currently learning to use multiple addresses at once ("multi-transport"), along with cryptographic hardening against evil server operators. The goal is to provide multi-server onboarding by default, and to automate server migrations (although for a while there will be an advanced settings interface where it's manually managed). You'd be onboarding "to the network" :)

Signal just released a "poll" feature with great fanfare, while all #deltachat apps already integrated a full suite of chat-shared apps, checklists, polls, shopping lists, calendar, editor + tons of games.
Better, anyone can create new apps, eg as github/codeberg forks from existing apps, and post it to their chats for instant deployment. No need to ask for permission, register an account, and no hosting or DNS: actually "server-less" and fully end-to-end encrypted :)

@nprofile…uufl you have a point and it's kind of funny that even though #chatmail uses the email system, one can't just give out an email address. The challenge is to establish automatic end-to-end encryption while maintaining identity privacy (in Delta Chat we want chat profiles to be fully private and decentralized so can't just do some central registry). There are some ideas on how to bring back the ease of telling your address and people contacting you. Just more involved than it sounds :)

Countering toxicity and fake takes is not just a technical question (moderation, admins etc) but one of social curation both collectively and privately: which people and groups do you/we trust for what. No tool can automate that.
#deltachat is for private e2ee messaging and mutually curated group chats, and not random social media propelled onboarding. We are with #Signal here and not with #simplex and #matrix who offer public anonymous discovery of large chat groups with lots of unknown folks.

Today, we were nicely surprised by a new comprehensive (italian) #deltachat introduction video, going through initial setup, groups and chatting, setup of second device, using #webxdc apps, bots, calls and playing Quake -- all the nice things you can do these days :)

@nprofile…j35c sure, nobody said avoiding hyperscalers is easy. In 8 years of project time we got about a tenth of the money that signal gives to hyperscalers, yearly. We can only tackle the challenges one by one, with the resources and skills we have, and see how far we get. Still some way 🤷🏽

Signal's president claimed it takes billions to replicate the availability and reliability of "hyperscalers" (AWS/Google/Microsoft/Cloudfare) that Signal uses.
#chatmail and #deltachat are about disproving this claim by
1) making relays super cheap (DONE)
2) enabling chat profiles to use multiple relays redundantly (WIP)
3) distributing relay knowledge among chatters (TBD).
Fat servers, corporate overlords and billionaires: not needed and better to not exist for a convivial e2ee future :)

@nprofile…lv94 This sounds like two separate problems: 1. chatmail relays don't like *unencrypted* inbound emails, and 2. other chatmail relays reject your message because your DKIM DNS record isn't set correctly. But hard to say definitely without knowing the exact situation...

Not taking Venture Capital money means:
- No pressure to maximize monetization of usage (for every million of VC funding you need to find ~100+ Million in value later).
- No prioritization of growing fast with PR campaigns that promise the moon and stumble on the ground
- No billionaire who ultimately profits
Instead, we seek public funding and private contributions for #chatmail #deltachat and #webxdc developments.

@nprofile…wrq7 there is https://github.com/chatmail/relay/blob/main/README.md but no explicit guide on how to set it up behind a NAT. There is some advise (not written up yet publically, alas) on how to use firewall rules to route traffic to (dynamic) IP addresses behind a NAT. Thing is that your chatmail relay needs to have a reachable SMTP/MX endpoint to receive mail from other email servers.

There is no single central signal server. Signal uses #AWS cloud, next to Google Cloud, Microsoft Cloud and Cloudflare, all under US legislation. If any of these clouds goes down or becomes otherwise problematic, chatting degrades or fails.
With #deltachat you can choos #chatmail relays ( https://chatmail.at/relays ) which distributes the risk across a wider network. We are currently working on the multi-transport feature to finally remove any central point of chat failure: https://chaos.social/@delta/115362144863345662

@nprofile…twyf there is a new upcoming encrypted broadcast channel feature evolving where an admin controls the channel. By December there should be a blog post about more details. But could provide the basis for influencer/streamer use cases but also will take a while to be fully mainlined into apps in all platforms.

The last 2-3 days there was a significant slow down with message sending, sometimes 15 seconds, via the default #chatmail relay .... Wasn't a CPU/RAM or other resource problem but a software configuration / implementation problem. After some hours of debugging it was solved by providing the "speed-adjust" proxy option to #postfix. message sending should be back to sub-second. No message was lost. Lesson learned: just search for "speed" in postfix docs first (and fix the offending module later).

@nprofile…z52u @nprofile…0fpr quick heads up. Our impressions: #matrix is going strong with public sector entities, and it's where most dynamics happened at the conf.
We are rather focused on private and resilient messaging where servers don't play a big role; as we want #chatmail relays to be dirt cheap to operate, no pro version needed. Our focus is on informal usage, groups, family, friends, affinity or interest groups, whereas matrix is increasingly focusing on corporate/ organizational use cases. YMMV

Base tech resilience comes from tools that can be used offline. #deltachat apps are offline-first in that you can create chats, send messages, look at messages/media and trigger establishung contact via qr code scans. And you can use #webxdc apps (with checklist, calendars, editors, shopping lists etc) because they not only don't require Internet but are barred from accessing it, providing privacy that doesn't require #gdpr or consent or login.

@nprofile…9lmf there are some similarities but #nostr is about social media (a feed/pull network model) whereas #chatmail relays are about private messaging (and-store-and-forward network model) and seamlessly interoperate with the existing email server network. Moreover, delta chat apps share the same core rust codebase with other chatmail clients, so that interop can be implemented in one place.

#deltachat has reliable and audited end-to-end encryption but reliable message delivery is equally crucial in times of shutdowns and increasing Internet fragmentation. #chatmail relays are more reliable and faster than classic email servers but they may still fail, leaving users stranded. The recent successful rollout of V2 releases not only hardened end-to-end encryption but will enable chat profiles to use multiple relays, removing a common point of failure in decentralized private messaging.

Es geht derzeit darum, zu verhindern dass #chatcontrol ende-zu-ende verschluesselung im allgemeinem untergraebt. Es ist eine der wenigen Techniken, die zentrale Plattformkontrolle begrenzt, die sowieso bereits viel zu gross ist.

There might very well be some twist that interested parties try to negotiate into the decision process that would still break end-to-end encryption. It's best to follow @nprofile…8gdf and other informed journalism and sources the next days, and keeping attention up until the scheduled vote october 14th. Danish presidency might postpone once again if they don't think they get a sufficient number of votes.

However, you can also use any of the published relays on https://chatmail.at/relays to get an address, or just use the default relay. Relays are cheap to run. The smallest available vps should easily support thousands of users as things stand.
