To vote or not to vote . . . . I stand by my statement. And while I support a very large proportion of what @benroyce says, I think it would improve his viewpoint of electoral democracy if he were to be able to stop viewing the exhibition in the lobby only through the US letterbox. When there are 30 candidates, and none of them are worth a vote, then it's a tad hard to label the non-voter a moron. It's not always a simple strategy game.

I like the Australian system (I think STV), other than compulsory voting. Not voting can also be a statement of political choice, even if it is too often abused.

Peace negotiations can never achieve anything when one party is not open to compromise, and Russia (the agressor) isn't.

I was visiting a German winemaker many years ago when he began griping about Germany's intention to raise the minimum wage from €8.50. I couldn't keep quiet, and told him in my view the current rate led to 2 social security claimants; the guy only getting €8,50, and himself and his business. He wasn't happy, and less so when I told him I wasn't happy either at having to subdidise his holidays on Sylt, which he had just told us about in glowing terms.

Unfortunately the present Labour Government have fallen prey to the general English tendency to preach good intentions while implementing wholesale anti-democratic legislation. I could have understood, and indeed expected this under a Tory government, but Labour. So many lost souls will be turning in their graves there will be no need to maintain or replant our cemetries.

And the other thing I realised, but that took a little longer: at my age, after, A-Levels, the was University or nothing. The idea of learning a trade was looked down on. Here the two routes to a future perspective were viewed as being of equal worth and status. That coupled with the concept of Leben langes Lernen (lifelong learning) had a very positive affect upon the propects for the majority of the populace.

Mine too. We are just moving and one of the biggest problems is the number of books we have. I have 650 documented, and my wife must have just as many undocumented.
The first priority is reassembling the bookcases, otherwise we are just creating more obstacles for inconsequential things like beds.

I've never been a student nor an academic, but I've read all of Dickens in my post-school days, along with Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, Victor Hugo, and a number of others. But I prefer essayists, and won't start on those.
Sometimes knowing the past helps to understand the present, and points a finger towards the future.

I have somwhere in my saved links a description of similar to, but not, concrete building blocks which use a bonding agent (like mortar but not mortar) which can be disassembled and reused. No it's not that famous toy manufacturer, but the principle is the same. There were no financial disadvantages to their use.
I might just look it up again this morning.
