@nprofile…7l00 I have a couple old Chrome boxes and that's really why I use them. When I see them on eBay etc now they don't look very competitive to new mini PCS.
In fact it's gotten to where if updating memory and storage in a Chromebox costs $50 and a new mini PC is $150 ..
Used parts to update old Chrome boxes are pretty cheap though.

I heard yesterday that Meta has opened it up and said go ahead, use AI during your interview.
This is kind of a radical solution, but at the same time an inevitable one.
If people are going to use AI, such as it is, as their little helper, you probably should see how well they can do that.
(It would be a contradictory position to suggest that AI can help you during an interview, while being worthless on the job. If it improves answers, it improves answers.)

@nprofile…fnuh That's the thing that maybe I was slow to pick up on. When search loses to AI it isn't just that Google loses to OpenAI or whatever. It's that people stop clicking through to the original sources. This makes a compensation problem for creators, but it also creates a great hanging question:
Who will be the creators, when creators don't get clicks?

@nprofile…fnuh so search was lumbering along, with Google's immense money being applied to constant page fetches and index updates, across the whole world, in near real time. The biggest problem they faced in that condition was the malicious counterparties who attempted search engine optimization, for their benefits rather than users.
But still that could have continued.
Now of course, we're in a funny situation where bad AI is preferred by many to original sources.

@nprofile…fnuh seems to me that this is a classic Christensen disruption, which is really happening in spite of Google seeing it coming, and trying as hard as they can to adapt.
They never really lost search, and they probably never would have lost search, because search requires monopoly level funding. Nobody else has committed to that. The best alternatives we have are people who repackage Google search. Kagi for instance says that they are not Google, they just use Google infrastructure (!)

The rational approach to AI and intellectual property should be that anything (1) with legal, especially public, access may go in, and (2) infringing works should never come out.
The problem today is that (1) and (2) are probably both violated, and it is left to a not incredibly tech literate legal and political system to resolve.

My current Linux setup is to load Debian with Gnome and then load Sway, Waybar, and Thunar, as an alternate environment. I use Sway most of the time, but have the fallback.
I just thought I would mention it to let you know this works without too much trouble. Just adding sway with apt install gives a usable experience, though you do have to know how the meta-d launcher works.

Our kids are out of crypto now. One got into Bitcoin early enough to make a bit, and then out. The other was in high school and got really enamored of nfts and etc. He then got a finance degree, and kind of grew up with it. It was surprising to me that he called the launch of the Melania coin as the end of everything. The last rug pull. He is now "Bitcoin zero" like me.

@nprofile…ttkq I have owned some road bikes over the years, but I've mostly been a mountain biker. These two choices are kind of well behaved general purpose bikes.
There were years where I would ride daily, but less now.
When I hit 60 I decided I didn't want to go to the hospital anymore and started riding much more conservatively. Not that I went that many times before, just a few fractures over 30 years.

We have seven blooms on this dragon fruit this morning. It is just growing in a 5 gallon pot on a patio in Los Angeles. We use a tomato gauge to keep it up, and trim off branches that go too wild. It is an old plant. It's never flowered this way before. I might have given it a bit of fertilizer, but I have been more regular in water this year. Apparently they like 100° days. #gardening success.

I am not a lawyer, but I would be wary of people who talk about illegal monopolies.
My understanding is that monopolies may always exist, but certain actions they take may be illegal. Maybe that's a fine point, but I think it's an important one. Legal monopolies, but possibly taking illegal actions.
We have many monopolies that aren't going away. Your electrical power company may be one. That's a case where the monopoly is both enforced and regulated by all levels of government.

To be honest I thought that the "no money," "matter duplicators take care of everything," MacGuffin and Star Trek next generation was pretty half-baked.
It negated a number of Original Series plotlines of course, but more than that. Matter duplicators don't really *solve* the human condition.

A guy in town has a four-car solution.
It starts with an Audi e-tron GT. That's okay. It continues with one of those expensive classic Bronco restomods. Eh. Then comes the black Cadillac Escalade. Oh oh. Finally, he has added a Cybertruck.

And obviously it does not consistently ensure that creators are paid for their work.
