good luck! I found it a lot easier today than it was 3 years ago. I did the “GUI Installer” method and I found it easy to follow. There was also a button in the installer to change the app’s scaling (dpi) in case you have a high-res screen.

I like the “Qobuzissime” curated selection, where they highlight notable albums from new artists. I often check out the new releases, which are really varied. And the “DailyQ” playlist on the app can have some interesting finds. Lastly, the “Release Radar” section shows me new releases from artists I follow which is super helpful.
The last 2 aren’t available in the web app yet, but are definitely on the mobile app, and might be on the desktop app (not sure, haven’t tried it).

I’m glad middle click is getting turned off by default too.
My first experience with Linux was installing it on a Mac, connecting my Magic Mouse, then trying to work out why it was randomly pasting my clipboard all over the place instead of clicking normally.
I eventually worked out that Linux thought magic mice should have a third, mystery button in the middle which pastes. Not a good first user experience - wasn’t familiar or comfortable behaviour.
Hopefully this helps new users.

oh that’s fascinating! I’m glad to see so many interesting takes on what an efficient desktop workflow can look like. Niri looks very interesting and I can understand the apples for sure.
I personally like to see some of my background while I use my computer, as it lifts my mood a bit. But to focus on intense work I can see why Niri or something similar would be ideal. Thank you for sharing!

- iOS app is great. The discovery features are a nice balance between curated choices and your own followed artists.
- I don't have a car, can't comment
- Not sure what Denon/HEOS is
- I'm 31, not sure, but it has every pop song I've wanted to listen to on it
- They did a survey about genAI music with listeners. Not sure what the outcome was. I haven't noticed any genAI music on it.
- It doesn't have podcasts
It's really great, I'd recomment.

I completely resonate with this. A GP gaslit me for wearing a mask once. “It’s 2024, why are you still wearing a mask?”
I could have quoted a dozen studies, stats, stories that explained why. I could have said I wanted to also look out for the health other people in the waiting room. But it was a 5 minute appointment I’d waited 3 weeks for.
On the other hand, one nurse thanked me for wearing a mask because she was about to go on holiday and didn’t want to get sick.

Just updated my laptop to Fedora 43. It's blisteringly fast! The app store is snappy, my computer boots up faster, and even the little UI animations feel more responsive.
By contrast, I'm trying *not* to update my iPhone 11 to iOS 26, because it'll inevitably slow down, have worse battery life, and need replacing.
This is why I love Linux over Apple - my devices get faster and more useful with every update, not slower and more broken.

I get this if I turn on my computer and log in with my fingerprint instead of my password. The computer can’t access any saved passwords and security keys if you don’t enter your password when you first log in - a fingerprint isn’t enough. Could that be the culprit?

So we gave up. My partner goes 'I didn't think this would be so hard.' Me neither. We agree to try another Linux distribution, maybe one for gaming.
I installed #Bazzite in about 30 minutes. There was a problem with the audio but we fixed it.
Now downloads are 10x faster than on Pop OS, controllers connect quicker, colours look absolutely delicious with HDR, and all the Steam overlays work really well.
It's honestly the perfect OS for a console-like PC #gaming experience. Thank you!

3. The Windows installer unhelpfully tells you it can't find those drivers you managed to find, download, and point it to for *accessing your hard drive*. What filetype does it want? What does 'signed' even mean? Good luck working that out, because I certainly couldn't.
4. I then saw this gargantuan list of other drivers I'd need to install for my motherboard. 2 hours in, even if I managed to install the thing, I could see I would still have a world of pain to come.

Now I've been tinkering with computers since I was maybe 4 years old. This should be easy, right?
2 hours in and I could not for the life of me manage to install Windows.
1. Putting a Windows installer onto USB isn't at all easy if you don't already have Windows.
2. The Windows installer doesn't know how to detect hard drives, so you *have to spoonfeed it the drivers it needs* to find hard drives

Our gaming PC on Pop OS has been playing up for weeks. The OS seems more or less abandoned. Steam kept crashing, controllers stopped working, the in-game Steam menu stopped working. Today he couldn't play the game he wanted *at all*.
My partner goes "why don't we try Windows? I just want to use whatever has the best support." I agree.

I really hope our public health systems wake up soon and start trying to protect us from Covid. Thank you for sharing your experience of Long Covid and I hope you continue to stay well. I've also had brain fog in the past and could totally relate to that feeling of the cloud lifting and thinking "oh wow, I didn't realise how much brainpower I'd lost". That's when I started taking a Lions Mane supplement anyway.

I don’t know about all of these things, but Signal’s source code is open source and freely available on GitHub. This includes its Android, iOS and desktop apps, as well as its server code and underlying encryption library:

yes! I bought an Aeron chair from this company:

This weekend I had the same conversation twice:
“I’m scared AI will improve and take my job within X months”.
I told them how Generative AI is a probability machine which cannot think, conceptualise, or understand anything. As such, it cannot “improve” in the way they fear. It’s fundamentally flawed, can’t be held accountable, and was made to increase revenue not meet needs.

glad you’re making this work! I have a suggestion to reduce friction further, if you’d like to hear it. You could write text that only shows up just in the new email notification like “your login code is 123456”. That way the user wouldn’t even need to open the email to get the code - they could just glance at the notification. Engineers I’ve worked with said they’ve done this by writing text that’s invisible at the top of the email body.

this design is asking the user to choose 2 things at once - both select a server *and* select whether to create an account or log into an existing one. This might cause friction. I’d suggest moving the “server” field onto both the login and the signup screens, so that you make this initial action a really simple choice.
Plus, didn’t you make a “forgot my sever” feature? I think that would make sense to have in the login screen, next to the server dropdown.

yeah, exactly. WhatsApp deletes your account after 60 days of inactivity anyway. So this way, you update your profile to tell people where to contact you instead, uninstall the app, and that information will be visible for 2 months before your account gets deleted.
I do appreciate that not everyone can delete WhatsApp, but if you ever plan to, I found that to be a good way of doing it.

I feel your frustration at the inequality everywhere. I don’t know exactly how involved Brian Acton is in the Signal app now. My understanding is that his involvement is very little beyond the initial $50million grant several years ago. [@Mer__edith](https://mastodon.world/@Mer__edith ) has been the face of the organisation for some time now. She has a badass record for going after big tech and doing things ethically.
I hope that however you decide to communicate with people, you feel good about what you choose.

I recently set my WhatsApp photo to a text saying “read bio”, set my WhatsApp status to say I’ve deleted the app, why I’ve deleted it, and that people can contact me on Signal. I also posted a WhatsApp story saying I’d left. I’ve had 3 people join as a result.
If you have social influence in your friendship groups, creating a Signal group for a regular catch-up or a group with a shared interest or a friendship/family group worked well for me too.
