I disagree, @npub1n0s…lahe, but I may be blind also.
The way I see, people are used to muting (and reporting) spam from their messaging threads and email inboxes. This feature is well used across many platforms.
The nature of WoT filtering means that each dataset is pulled from a given user’s entire network (of follows follows or whatever) to provide an even richer dataset than the user alone has created. Even if one user is a bit “lazy” in muting or reporting, blacklist spam filtering can still be effective.
Am I missing something?

So … validating user metadata at the relay level is your thing.
I agree that ALL tools should be used to deter bots and bad actors, and that these filters should prolly be implemented on the server side for best performance.
But you’re saying that validating against follows follows is lazy and wrong?
It’s just another tool… what am I missing?

No, and maybe.
“Censorship resistance” qualifies anyone’s ability to publish anything at anytime, without concern of being “banned”.
“Spam proofing” refers to an END USER’s ability to filter their OWN feed as per their OWN content wishes.
Nostr, as freedom tech, needs to shine in both of these abilities.
MAYBE proof of work solves for spam resistance, but maybe sometimes it doesn’t. There is no silver bullet, and the best (open source and client agnostic) WoT algos will incorporate many user configurable filters in order to accomplish this task.

Yea… this is not spam proof. There ARE prolific followers on Nostr. Everybody’s list of “follows follows” can (and prolly does) include any number of bots and bad actors.
Without filtering, a bare minimum WoT list is not actually trustworthy. Not now, and definitely not as Nostr scales.
WoT relays are a great idea. But WoT itself needs better algos.

so… the demo is live right now at nostrmeet.me, but it’s still not quite MVP complete.
The MVP will provide complete functionality to “scan my QR code and message me privately” (using gift wrapped no-data-leak NIP-17) for ANY friend new to Nostr. This will be a valuable app in its own right for having instant private and anonymous messages with anybody.
What I have currently working is “scan my code to create an account with username and password, where username gets you a NIP05, and password gets your private key encrypted so you can log in again with U&P.”

AFAIK, this is done by sending a NIP-42 ephemeral event. Regular HTTP auth DOES NOT WORK over nostr, because there is no server side to verify credentials. NIP-42 is how relays can dynamically authenticate client access.

I think you missed the point of my question … if it matters.
Today, nostr is a reservoir for freedom culture. In the not so far future, when Nostr is global and the standard “nostr app” is a hybrid app, indistinguishable from any other black box reseller of user data, Nostr will no longer be this reservoir. It will no longer hold value as freedom tech.
SO WHAT if this is inevitable. Freedom culture is always under threat.
So my more direct question is:
“How do we retain freedom culture even as the tools we build to support it are eroded by NGU culture?”

Yes it is complicated. But there are a “finite” set of these data types (Nostr event kinds that interact with other events in ways that may be interesting for WoT) to calculate.
There doesn’t need to be a standard of “which data types” should be used “in which manner” by clients. Some de facto standards may arise, while other algo inputs will only increase in complexity. Standards are not as important as adaptability.
For the foreseeable future, developers of WoT recommendation engines will have to keep their ears to the ground to adapt their algo inputs accordingly. But this complication does not need to be developed all at once or overnight.
Mind you, this is a new perspective for me. It’s much easier to just say “let’s make a standard”, to make development easier. But life IRL does not work this way. Life adapts. So we must learn to adapt as Nostr grows.
Today we do this. Tomorrow we do a bit more. Baby steps.

I have no idea TBH … I think Nostr is not actually the right architecture … but for relays to NOT become targets (in the future as Nostr scales), e2e encryption would be the way.
Gift-wrapped events have no publicly visible data except the destination pubkey and an approximate date. All else needs to be decrypted by recipient nsec…

@npub1r0r…q9ac and @npub1qny…95gx are not entirely convinced that a “dedicated onboarding client” is the best way to solve for onboarding … however, social onboarding is different.
- links and QR codes (for inviting friends) MUST land on a web based client, and installing a native client will ALWAYS be more steps for the end user.
- The UX for customizable invites and network discovery of recommended clients, relays, follows, and other stuff should REALLY be a polished flow. Most social clients will not have such a polished flow as a dedicated onboarding client, or at least a “plug and play” wizard that can be added to their own client.
- the most important feature for social onboarding is immediate and private communication between the invited and their advocate inviter. This can be as simple as implementing gift-wrapped direct messaging in the onboard client itself.
nostrmeet.me fulfills all of these needs. it is a “dedicated onboard client” because, despite the hurdle of having “yet another client”, exactly this kind of client IS what is needed for social onboarding.

nostr.build is in this list, with 8 reports of “apparent child pornography”. That’s not a lot, but more than we should want to see.
While image uploads are more vulnerable to be taken down than other Nostr content (because an image is only hosted in one location) there are a growing number of these upload services available for Nostr clients.
I’m not sure how illegal image content should be restricted on Nostr, but I’m eager to see this conversation unfold.

Nostr may be better with Bitcoin, but Bitcoin needs Nostr.
Nostr is a reservoir for “freedom culture”, which is being diluted by “number go up” culture.
Bitcoin may be designed to fix the system, but the powers that be won’t go down with a fight. Freedom culture is the obvious target. As long as “Bitcoin only” is the mantra, then the freedoms promised by Bitcoin will slowly be eroded.
Nostr is how we preserve the “culture of freedom” so that we can manifest the future promised by Bitcoin.

When measuring Nostr’s global market share, however, we need to be aware that “hybrid” Nostr apps will not have the same freedom power as “Nostr only” apps.
If it uses Nostr as identity layer, and stores user data in a local DB, is it really freedom tech?
