TL;DR: excess CO₂ in the atmosphere is altering human blood chemistry. It will exceed healthy limits within 50 years if we continue pumping CO₂ into the atmosphere at current rates.
Not to mention what it will do to people who are already unhealthy, and to animal life in general.
And no, beyond a certain level it’s not good for plants, either. That's another myth.
But yeah, let's keep burning gas and oil, and eating meat.

You try new ideas in a small scale trial first to see if they work. If they work, you scale them up a little and keep collecting data, because not all ideas that work in small trials scale up.
The point of the thread is you don't know which ideas work in advance. Ideas need to be tested.

I haven’t been in high-energy theory since 1980 when I dropped out of my Ph.D. program to do software, though I’ve been following along. I’ve been wondering if theories where spacetime is emergent rather than fundamental might be a way out of the issues with Lorentz invariance. One example is twistor theory—are you aware of others?

Since human minds and human societies are some of the most complex systems we know, predicting how they work from first principles isn’t currently possible (and may never be).
So I'm *deeply* skeptical of utopian plans for society. If you want to convince me we should change society in some way, point me at an example of a society that tried it and had it work out well.
What societies/practices currently give the best outcomes for people? We should learn from those.

I am still seeing tons of articles in the mainstream media about how Democrats need to win back disaffected Trump voters. This is despite the data which clearly shows that Trump's vote did not increase significantly over 2020, but rather that Democratic voters voted in substantially smaller numbers.
I see no articles about how Democrats need to energize their base to vote, which is what the data indicates. The mainstream narrative is pure bullshit.

My scorecard so far in getting folks on Bluesky I want to follow to turn on the ActivityPub bridge: 2 did so, 9 didn't respond or I couldn’t find a way to contact them.
I really wish this bridge acted like "request follow" rather than requiring an explicit opt in. The bridge could ask someone on either side whether they want to accept/reject a single person at a time, open up follows completely, or opt out of bridging altogether and not be asked again.

When I was a little trans girl in 1965 and first tried to come out, this was one of the standard “therapies” for trans people. I was incredibly lucky that I was ignored rather than “treated.”
The fascists want to take us back to this.

I still cringe whenever I see advice to “pick a server at random." That doesn't tend to end well for people who are frequently targets online: women, people of color, LGBT, etc. Those people need an instance with good moderation, which many don't have.
The Fediverse lost a large fraction of the people who tried it a couple of years ago because of this issue.
Otherwise a great guide and it does mention moderation a couple of times.

I loathe Meta and don't use any of their products. I also have zero problems with Meta joining the Fediverse or participating in technical standards discussions, or with anyone using any open source projects they produce, or with interoperating with them, as long as they continue to do all of those things properly, which they have, so far. Do the same people who oppose all this also oppose the U.N., or international scientific cooperation or technical standards?

I noticed that the scientific concerns about the Cass review were mentioned only briefly, while lots of space was devoted to people crowing about what a great, robust scientific work it was. No mention of Dr. Cass’s complete lack of expertise in the field.

The Cass Review is straight out of "Merchants of Doubt”—pseudoscience manufactured to put established research in doubt by creating the appearance of a true scientific disagreement. Ignoring the good things Biden has done (and why should we?), people cannot conceive just how fucked we're going to be if Trump wins, because they're not paying attention. It's all out there in plain sight. Women's rights, climate change, LGBTQ rights, and more, all down the drain.
Biden is far from perfect. He has made mistakes. Perfect is not on the ballot, has never been on the ballot, and will never be on the ballot.

I'm trying to figure out where Irish electrons fit in the Standard Model. Is there an additional quantum number that distinguishes them from non-Irish electrons? What would it be called? I will never forgive the mainstream media for aiding and abetting the trans moral panic that is causing untold harm to trans kids and adults. Never. The science of gender-affirming care is well-supported, but it was more important to them to perform objectivity (as opposed to actually practice it). The same playbook they've followed for climate change. That isn't journalism.
