And this (looong post) from the bird site ~
Dr Tracy Westerman AM
@TracyWesterman
The Sanewashing of Hanson Is at Its Peak.
This is how Trump came to power: platform the lies, skip the follow-up, let the headlines call it “proving her critics wrong.”
We are all watching it happen in real time.
At the National Press Club, Pauline Hanson said the following. Not one claim was challenged by the so called journalists in attendance and she continues to be unchallenged on the facts in every interview she sits.
-1. Unlike the Prime Minister, I welcome scrutiny.” Hypocritical. In the same speech she announced she refuses ABC interviews, will scrap the SBS, & will make the ABC subscription-only. The event allowed 2 hours; standard format gives 25–30 mins for the address. She spoke for 50-halving the time left for questions. When Guardian journalist Sarah Martin used that remaining time to ask about her daughter's $150,000 taxpayer-funded advisor role, Hanson called her “a trashy journalist” and banned her from all future press conferences.
• “Babies are aborted the day before birth.” Fabricated. Late-term abortion is highly restricted, requires medical approval, and occurs only in genuine medical emergencies.
• “Interest rates are heading towards 10%.” False. RBA cash rate: 4.35%. Forecast to fall, not rise.
• “There’s no gender pay gap — just women taking time off.” False. WGEA confirms the gap exists at equal hours, equal roles, regardless of career breaks.
• “$30B a year on Indigenous programs.” False. Only 18% (~$5.6B) is Indigenous-specific. The rest is the Indigenous share of mainstream services every Australian uses.
• Transgender people were compared to “militant Islam.” False and dangerous. ABS data: transgender and gender-diverse Australians make up 1% of the pop’n. There’s no body of research showing transgender ppl commit crime at elevated rates-in fact it shows transgender people are dramatically more likely to be victims of violence— assault, sexual violence, and homicide rates against trans people are well above general population rates in most studies (US, UK, and Aust data all show this pattern)
• “23% of Australians can’t speak English.” False. That 23% speak another language at home — most are bilingual. Limited English proficiency: just 3.2%.
• “The CEFC has had $200 billion.” False by a factor of six. Actual legislated capacity: $33 billion.
• “I care about the homeless and hungry.” Hypocritical. In the same speech, she backed cuts to Indigenous-specific funding — despite Aboriginal homelessness running up to 10 times higher than the non-Indigenous rate.
• $90 billion in cuts, no plan. ~$35 billion of it remains unaccounted for. No modelling.
• “I support worker rights.” False. Voted against minimum wage increases, penalty rates, criminalising wage theft, casual conversion rights, same job same pay, and the right to disconnect. Took a $100,000 pay rise while voting against a tax break for low-paid workers
• Called Australian workers “lazy.” She has attended just 12% of Senate estimates since 2016 & 53% of parliamentary votes. Paid over $200k a year
• Labor have let immigration get out of control.” False. Net overseas migration has fallen every year since the post-COVID peak in 2022-23 — 538,000 → 446,000 → 306,000 in 2024-25. She also recycled a 26-year-old ABS pop’n projection as a fresh “next 50 years” forecast
Said: This beautiful country belongs to all Australians born here and those who have joined us”- in her opening line; then spent the next 50 minutes demanding a monocultural society, comparing transgender Australians to militant Islam, inflating migration and language figures, denying the gender pay gap, and repeating the debunked $30 billion Indigenous funding myth. Welcomed everyone in the first sentence. Spent the rest of the speech defining most of them out — and offered no plan to fix anything she raised, only $90 billion in cuts.
Not one follow-up question. No source data on a single figure in the entire speech. This is what unchallenged looks like.

Sharyn Alfonsi goes scorched earth on Bari Weiss:
"Over the weekend, my contract with CBS News expired, drawing to a close nearly twenty years with the network, including more than a decade at 60 Minutes.
Following an intense editorial dispute over our CECOT story, repeated attempts by my representation to establish a path forward were met with absolute silence from network executives. The message could not be clearer: my time at 60 Minutes is apparently over.
In the coming days, network leadership may attempt to hide behind corporate euphemisms like "modernization" and “restructuring” to explain away my departure. Don't be misled. This was not a routine corporate transition; it was a deliberate choice to penalize a journalist for refusing to sanitize factually accurate reporting, and it sends a chilling message to the entire newsroom.
Fearless, independent reporting has always been the defining standard at 60 Minutes. Today, CBS management is abandoning that mission, choosing access journalism over accountability and protecting power rather than scrutinizing it.
The wall between editorial independence and corporate interest at CBS is being methodically torn down. Journalists willing to challenge authority are being pushed aside in favor of those who will not. If this continues, the result will be a broadcast that looks like 60 Minutes but lacks the courage and character to produce journalism that matters.
To my colleagues, who became family - working beside you has been the privilege of a lifetime. You are second to none. I’ve learned exactly what it costs to hold the line right now. Hold it anyway. Viewers and the people who trust us with their stories deserve nothing less."

I still can't trust what I see on my own timeline, as those two buttons still faze me, and the 'edit profile' shows bugger all. Now, I'm not entirely sure - although I did a brief test and it seemed confirmed - that the front sliding doors on our local Aldi are motion detector doors. And if you walk up to them they open but if you then stand still without going in, they close and stay closed.
Soooo... this morning an elderly woman walked up to the doors at 08:28 in keen anticipation. A crowd of patient shoppers stood back because the doors would open at the allotted time because, well, the woman was standing there. Right?
By 08:35 there was increasing foot-tapping and considerable grumbling. Then someone not-an-Aldi-customer walked by, completely incidentally, and the motion of them passing triggered the door, which had been unlocked 5 minutes ago and was waiting for, you know, MOTION 😀

Our house is beside Throsby Creek, a major watercourse that runs through Newcastle's central northern burbs. It's an old place and sits a good metre above ground. A new house was built opposite last year and I was interested to see that the concrete slab was built up to a little higher than our floor. We're in a 1/100 year flood zone. Some years back when the main street of Mayfield flooded into shops (a very rare event) our street was Dryzabone. Pensioners' insurance co wouldn't insure us for that. But Alliance couldn't give a shit - until the moment arrives and I'm sure they'll pull some obscure gotcha.

Back in the sixties we moved to inner Newcastle - New Lambton, to be precise - and the house next door was - wait for it.... - bright lolly pink!! Turned out to be an old Pommie couple (Mr and Ms Moss) and lovely people. She was so typically English, and he too. The back yard was 90% chrysanthemums, while the garage was chock full of budgies. He was a breeder. Their old white cockatoo had their English accent and learned to mimic her. At random times it screeched "Harry, coom an 'uv a coopa tae" by cause of which he spent many unnecessary trips to the house.
oh, I digress 😀 yes, pink....

Puzzled that you need a bad night's sleep to justify an afternoon nap. You do realise afternoon naps are mandatory, even if you've slept all night and all morning.

Been vaguely following. So, in the oven raw or broiled first, and for how long. The second one sort of answers itself. Cook until yummy. How many sad people have never heard of The Quince?

From a post of mine just now:
...Despite the fact Bowen has been holding daily news conference briefings updating on fuel availability, and has often been joined by Albanese in spelling out initiatives to address fuel security, the Coalition accuses the government of a lack of “transparency”. It’s a favourite theme of Angus Taylor’s. One Labor insider believes Taylor is widely missing the mark. His critique is “waffle for I don’t know”.

Family home? They blew that too 😀 Mum, who survived, sold it and spent the proceeds on a unit in a retirement village - you know, the ones that keep it when you die. I did end up with her 30 year old Volvo and gave it to the local garage 😶

My second choice is the sourdough pizza bases. They're at least thickish, and work well. The 'spicy potato' topping is just potato and sweet potato mashed to very lumpy with any old assortment of spices thrown in, plus whatever makes it slightly hot (chili flakes maybe). Then some cheese on top, or even plus a layer of slices under the potato, as it's rather moist. So simple but delish.

Of topic, but it follows.
I'm in the category of never having received an inheritance, despite many 'comfortable' relatives. My parents, however, received several. Including a beautiful brick and slate house at Eastwood in Sydney. They blew it all on overseas holidays. Yet I can't begrudge them. They lived through the depression and the angst of WW2, then battled to old age in small business that was far from lucrative, including being bankrupted by a contracting arsehole.
Still, life has been both good and easy for me as a result of their struggle. (Chapter 2 of my life story tomorrow 😀 )

I dislike the thin crust bases, and it's so hard to find a thick one. Not into the trouble of making my own dough, as I'm not that great a pizza fan. Probably because the commercial ones are so gross. However, taking my cue from the local Turkish pide/pida shop, my fav topping is spicy potato with cheese melt. And lucky to find frozen Papa Giuseppe's rising crust, when it's on special. Nice and thick and bready 🙂

Suffering dissonance here. Part of me wants Iran forced to become a normal greedy oil-loving Middle East country building huge resorts and the world's tallest buildings all on the backs of slave labour, while the other wants the ceasefire to fail if only to further humiliate Donald the Terrible (iknowiknow - nose/face).

Chose the naughty option, because it seems to be the go with our neighbours. They also manage to slam the vehicle door in a single session at least 2 or 3 times the number of doors on the vehicle. Yet to determine exactly why. One of life's mysteries I guess.

As awful as war machinery is, still in awe of this fearsome aircraft. The redundancy extends to the pilot's metal 'bathtub' of protection. Interested, like all, to see what downed it.

Aldi's 1L choc ice cream is the best bargain, but their 'triple pack' policy means it sells out first and we have to wait for the other two to sell before they'll restock. At least, that's how it works at our local.

Your 8 minute tutorial on why the Persian Gulf is gone, possibly forever. If Israel can't eliminate Hamas by completely erasing Gaza, does the US think it can eliminate the IRGC from a country of 90 million?
