My 7th graders genuinely don't believe Helen Keller was deaf and blind because of weird TikTok and YouTube algorithms.
This came up when we were listening to Stevie Wonder and they implied there's no way he is actually blind.
They look for information from a combination of AI summaries to questions typed into Google and whatever content is incentivized for clicks by algorithms. Reality is slipping. 🧵 1/4

As an art teacher I was worried AI would come up as an issue of "why should I learn how to draw when I can use AI instead."
But the real issue is that my middle schoolers CONSTANTLY believe all art I show them is AI. Digital art. Photography. Oil paintings from the Western canon. "A human couldn't do that"
Being convinced that humans can't make great art is kind of terrifying

Ok, attempting to expand my #fediverse community to include my fellow #education folks!
I'm teaching #middleschool #art in Baltimore City. I'm interested in connecting with all #arteducator s, middle and high school teachers of whatever subjects, and #Baltimore City teachers and school-adjacent folks.
I have always made art for a living and taught part-time, ~ a 30 (art sales)/70 (teaching gigs) split with income. This is the first time doing ONE JOB that I know will be super hard!

Ok I'm making a new intro post to try to find more of "my" people out here.
I like the #indieweb, #aquarium keeping, #printmaking and other #art, I'm in #arteducation in various capacities (higher ed, hospitals, schools), force-free #dogtraining and #americanhistory (esp the #civilwar).
