I’m Charlie: Anglican priest in the North Georgia Mountains. Older Gen X — old enough to remember when both the church and the dollar meant something. Husband, father, lover of freedom, gardens, and dogs. In that order, mostly. Later-in-life tech student: running a Start9 node and two S21s. The hash rate calls; the pulpit calls louder.
I preach through the lectionary — the cycle of Scripture readings that has shaped Christian worship for centuries. I hold to the ancient faith of the Apostles and the creeds — rooted in Scripture and passed down faithfully. Sermons as Reads here every Sunday and on mountainvicar.com.
Why Nostr? Why Bitcoin?
God made us in His image (Genesis 1:26–27) — the image of the One who spoke creation into being. Speech is a divine gift: we are designed to seek, receive, and proclaim truth, reflecting the One who is Truth itself. To silence a person is to suppress something sacred.
Honest money is a moral issue too. Fiat is designed to be debased — inflated, manipulated, and controlled by the powerful at the expense of the weak. Turns out the money changers never really left the temple. Scripture calls unjust measures an abomination (Proverbs 11:1). Bitcoin is the opposite: fixed, transparent, and decentralized. Just weights and measures, encoded in math.
The powers of this age are never neutral. The Church has known this forever. We’ve had some practice with empires. Nostr and Bitcoin offer infrastructure for truth without permission — aligning deeply with living under God rather than corrupted man, and with the freedom we are called to stand firm in.
If you’ve read this far, we likely share something: sats and sermons, a love of freedom, a soft spot for gardens and dogs, solid memes, or just fatigue with the noise and a pull toward bigger questions. The Ancient Faith has been speaking into moments like this one for two thousand years.

The apostles, once scared and hiding after the crucifixion, spread across the Roman world proclaiming the risen Christ after the resurrection. Most faced brutal deaths: crucifixion, beheading, stoning, spearing, burning. They had nothing earthly to gain, everything to lose. They claimed to be eyewitnesses of the resurrection. Liars don’t endure torture and martyrdom without recanting. Their unwavering conviction is hard to explain without genuine belief in what they saw. #biblestr #christianity #grownostr

Philippians 4:13 — ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’ — is probably the most misquoted verse in the Bible. Athletes tattoo it for victory, motivational speakers slap it on success memes, others for success in whatever they do. But read the context (Phil 4:11-13): Paul is saying he’s learned to be content in any circumstance. Abundance or hunger, plenty or need, because Christ gives him strength to endure it all. What he encounters shatters every assumption about how we earn our way to God. Through John 3:1–16, Romans 4, and Psalm 33, one truth emerges with striking clarity: no amount of religion, intellect, or moral achievement can produce what only God can give—a life born from above. That’s a true statement. It can also be challenging to find a “good” church these days. Even the best church is a messy organization because it is made up of messy people. Yet we are exhorted not to forsake the gathering of ourselves. When we do, we slowly become like the ember that popped out of the fire onto the hearth, no longer glowing just beginning to be snuffed out. Find a church that preaches the gospel well, administers the sacraments regularly, and has a few folks that you can deeply connect with. “It is not good for man to be alone.” We need a regular diet of God’s word and community in order to go deep into faith. Everything else seems secondary, ie., a musical style, programs, location, ancient architecture or big box retail store front. Some would argue that they are fine on their own, and that works for a season. It has in my own life at times. But, as a long term strategy, it is not a very good one, imho.

There’s something sacred about this moment — a puppy curled up in my lap, trusting and content. Scripture reminds us that our relationship with animals and creation isn’t accidental. Proverbs 12:10 tells us, “A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal” (ESV). From the very beginning, God entrusted humanity with the care of His creation — not as owners, but as stewards. Every creature reflects the creativity and goodness of our Creator, and how we treat them says something about the condition of our hearts. So yes, this dog is spoiled — and I think that’s exactly as it should be. 🐾

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent: a time of repentance, fasting, and prayer, in preparation for the great feast of the resurrection.
Throughout the Old Testament, ashes are used as a sign of sorrow and repentance, and Christians have traditionally used ashes to indicate sorrow for our own sin, and as a reminder that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Like Adam and Eve, we have disobeyed and rebelled against God, and are under the same judgment, “You are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19).
But as we are marked with ashes in the same manner that we were signed with the Cross in Baptism, we are also reminded of the life we share in Jesus Christ, the second Adam (Romans 5:17, 6:4). It is in this sure hope that we begin the journey of these forty days, that by hearing and answering our Savior’s call to repent, we may enter fully into the joyful celebration of his resurrection.
