would you recommend Aika at this point over Beben? Or only for users who may want to live on the edge? I might give it a shot at packaging it for Arch regardless of the answer, but I'm curious to know :blobcatsurprised:

a bit out of the usual recommendations but not far from Museo del Prado (which I very much agree one should stop by to admire Velazquez's paintings), you can also find the Navy Museum: https://armada.defensa.gob.es/ArmadaPortal/page/Portal/ArmadaEspannola/cienciaorgano/prefLang-en/01cienciamuseo — the permanent display includes the first European-made map to include America, *the original parchment*; Chinese Ming dynasty porcelain; nautical instruments, paintings, and models... It's a bit of an oddball, but also underrated.

that is GNOME Web, indeed! We recently got a few patches contributed to upstream @npub1req…6fnv that make it work on QNX. For example https://github.com/WebKit/WebKit/pull/54920 is not even that big, which makes me think the POSIX/Linux API compatibility must be pretty good these days.

We are *considering* as an option to enable building WebRTC support by default using GstWebRTC in the upcoming 2.52.x stable series in Sprint next year, and shipping the needed additional sources in release tarballs. It won't be perfect, sites may or may not work, but then we would continue improving from there onwards.
Again, I am not saying it will happen for sure; but we (the WebKit GTK and WPE port maintainers) have been discussing the option, so it *might* happen.

there was also an #Amiga port which, interestingly, had a quite different user interface to accommodate the lower resolution. But setting it apart from most other games on the platform, it could also use a high resolution interlaced mode, which looked gorgeous—specially with a flicker fixer.

so yeah, “signature spoofing is bad” basically is a straw man argument bashing on the alternative to make it sound like Google's Services are better by implication, but that's not answering the original question of “how do GrapheneOS people justify running Google stuff is better for privacy than not running it at all?”

that misses the point, signature spoofing is not a “free for all” way of spoofing applications, and packages that use it need to be given explicit permission to use it. When you use a ROM that includes microG bundled the permission is pre-approved for microG packages but nothing else. So yes, I agree with Thom that it seems dumb to move the Google Services to a container, because they will do the same they did before in there :blobthinkingcool:

Still tinkering with CP/M tools these days.
DOS has CP/M at its roots, so does MSX-DOS. Which means I can be dropped into its command prompt and have a decent idea how to move around and get basic stuff done. But then getting into nitty-gritty details feels like a rabbit hole: version 2 vs. 3, derivative systems, alternative command interpreters and batch processors, CCP, ZCPR, Z-System, MP/M... I get lost easily.
So yeah, quite the learning process.

mmh, I found a couple of copies of Zex but they seem to require ZCPR or CP/M 3, while on MSX-DOS the compatibility goes up to 2.2 — I'll try to search a bit more some other day. Thanks for the pointer!

The last few days I've been trying out Turbo Modula-2 for CP/M on my #MSX to get a feel of how people would work back in the day. I'm still not convinced by Pascal-style programming languages, but it is enough of a step ahead from Turbo Pascal on CP/M to not grind my gears too much.
Compilation speeds are okay, and the incremental parser helps errors it will resume after the latest position untouched by the editor. Having an actual module system helps as well. Generated #Z80 code is surprisingly good for a high level language.
Now, question for the CP/M folks around: is there any way at all of making the Turbo Modula-2 compiler work in batch mode, from the command line?

multiple implementations of a standard would be better... But wait, there is no Rust standard specification! Also: everything gets statically compiled, have a security bug in let's say a TLS/SSL implementation and you cannot just replace a shared library and have all the programs benefit from the fix (a case where static linking sucks). Oh wait, there's no stable ABI in Rust, so one cannot make shared libraries!
I agree that Rust the language has good ideas, and learning to use it has value and will give a programmer new mental models to work with. Now, Rust has its share of issues (which may be non-issues for *some* projects, actually) so I'm very skeptical of “Rust fanboyism”. It's one tool more in the toolbox.

I'm old, but let me whisper one thing here... 👻 VGA text mode consooooole 👻
Granted, modern firmware may itself emulate it on top of the EFI framebuffer, but all least would still work even if kernel KMS is broken in some way.
...and yes, I know the kernel can itself use the EFI framebuffer, but depending on how old the hardware is there might not be one, but VGA/VESA BIOS emulation may be available.
At any rate, there shouldn't be any reason to remove the VGA console from the kernel even if the console emulation on top of KMS gets moved to userspace.

I just moved here from @npub12rh…pnh3 looking for a cozier instance, which I should have done earlier... So let's make this an #introduction post.
People call me Adrian, and I'm living in Finland, which is quite different from the South of Europe where I've been born. I've been into #FreeSoftware since 1998, my first Linux install was SuSE 5.3 (Boxed! With dead tree manuals!) and life hasn't been the same since. These days I mostly work on @npub1kyk…g5gg and a bit on @npub1req…6fnv for @npub12wy…lm9d, and maintain their Buildroot packaging.
On the #RetroComputing front, I used to have a Sony HB-75P #MSX but it ended up being discarded (long story) and after two decades without one I finally decided to get a Panasonic FS-A1WSX MSX2+ which has given me plenty of warm fuzzy feelings. I also enjoy doing small pixel art thingies like my doge avatar, mostly with #Aseprite, but it takes me a lot of time and I am not very good at it. Some day I hope to have an #Amiga 1200 as well.
