The @nprofile…cqyh has announced me as a speaker for its fifth edition in Blantyre. My session makes the legal case that monetary debasement is a rights question under international law. I will keep posting the argument here in writing.

Useful anchor. What I take from Article 1 of Protocol 1 is the method: Strasbourg asks whether an interference with property strikes a fair balance, which is a proportionality test. The Inter-American system applies a comparable test under Article 21. The same logic can reach monetary and fiscal decisions with a direct, significant impact on rights.

Hi Johnny, the speaker release covers recording and publishing the sessions. I will share the link here once it is published, and the written argument will be posted here as well.

In December I will present at the Africa Bitcoin Conference in Blantyre. The argument: monetary debasement and exclusion from the financial system are both questions of rights, and international law already has tools to test them. Looking forward to sharing it with this community. #bitcoin #nostr

Only economic decisions with a predictable, significant and direct impact on rights would come under review. The test asks how a decision was made, whatever economic model the state prefers. Transparency, proportionality, non-regressivity, intergenerational equity and due diligence are the starting criteria, and the list is meant to grow.

My country has lived through peso crises in 1976, 1982 and 1994. That history is why this question feels concrete to me.

Tools matter, and so does the legal baseline: privacy in payments sits inside the right to private life, so a CBDC design that removes it has to show necessity and proportionality. I will watch the episode for how Max frames the technical side. Does he address whether any CBDC design could meet that standard?

Rights law offers a useful test here. Monitoring payments, or being able to switch them off, touches private life and property. Any such interference needs a legal basis, a legitimate aim and proportionality. "Digital cash" is a claim that should be able to pass that test.

Environmental law accepts that we cannot spend what belongs to people not yet born. A deficit financed by money creation spends the same inheritance on a balance sheet. Same principle, different ledger.

Bitcoiners have made the economic case for years. I am building the legal case. Where do you think it is weakest? I would rather hear the strongest objection now than in December at the Africa Bitcoin Conference.

Central banks and finance ministries decide things that reach food, housing and health. Yet economic governance still operates as a rights-free zone: no legal standard asks whether a decision was reasoned, proportionate or reversible in its harm. That gap is fixable.

Time preference shapes what a society builds. When money loses value quietly, saving becomes a bet and long horizons become expensive. Forests, watersheds and soil pay back over decades. My argument is that sound money is a precondition for ecological stewardship, and the rights conversation has missed the connection.

Inflation works like a tax nobody voted on. It falls hardest on people who hold cash and have no access to assets that keep pace. Human rights law tests whether a burden lands unevenly on those least able to carry it. I keep asking why monetary policy escapes that test. #bitcoin

Hello Nostr. I am an international human rights lawyer, and for fifteen years I have watched economic governance operate as a rights-free zone: decisions with direct consequences for food, housing and health, made with no legal standard attached. In December I will be speaking at the Africa Bitcoin Conference on the legal case for sound money. I will share the argument here, piece by piece.
