I think the biggest threat right now is the self-righteous groups--those who are the thought police. I don't share much of my thoughts here any longer because it's far too easy to fall prey to them, and I value my sanity too much.

As an amateur astronomer for the past 63 years, I have watched our night skies slowly degrade to their current state. This is the biggest danger to ever seeing stars again, and not to mention, potentially damaging your eyes as you look through a telescope. If you are a #US citizen please consider writing the FCC against this insane project.

Starlink is a disaster for so many reasons.
I remember as a kid (1972, about 100 satellites in orbit) the excitement of picking up a satellite with my telescope. It was an extremely rare and unlikely random event. Today one can't avoid them.

The $40 price tag just covers manufacturing costs and a 30% profit margin. The $28K is the price charged in the USA. The USA subsidizes the rest of the world's drug marketplace. We have for decades now. We in the USA pay 10x the cost outside the USA for most patented drugs.

We had software that was translated into 16 languages. We tested it with people who were native for each of those and we ALWAYS ran into trouble with screen readers. I don't know if they are better now, but I'd like to throttle the throats of some of those developers. One would read across the screen regardless of very clear demarcation of windows separating those regions. So we built special breaks for screen readers. But at times missed them because they are invisible.

It's a sign of the times. We had gotten to pretty solid software releases at one point in time, then we got into releasing Beta+ releases and fixing bugs realtime. Now, who knows what systems are. Microsoft pushed out an update to Win11 that froze out SSI drives for a number of users. It's not what I call QC.

One should not expect any users to do testing unless they sign up to test and report back on bugs in the Beta version of the system. I think that just makes good business sense, not to burden your users with testing.

We were on a nature boat ride through forested areas in FL and I spotted a pileated woodpecker. The guide played a male's call on his phone and that woodpecker came out to see who his rival was. The reaction was amazing. So cool though as everyone got to see him out in the open.

When all the noise and protests about Gaza were going on, I warned people this was going to adversely affect the election. Sure enough, millions stayed home.
Further, the sanewashing of Trump to people via media "balanced" "both sides" or whatever you want to call it threw the election. There was no substantial fraud in the 2024 election. I refuse to be party to the mindset of the January 6th crowd.

Oh yeah, Guinness 0 is good, the whole line of Athletic beers are surprisingly good. I still miss being able to try local brews when I travel. It was what I did for more than 40 years of my life. But alas, I'm better off not drinking.

Yes! My wife is a hobby baker and people are astounded by how good the breads, cookies (biscuits), and cakes are. She said, I use good ingredients. We are fortunate that if one is willing, you can get good ingredients, just not normally at the supermarket and at 2-3x the price.

Years ago I used to brew my own beer. I got pretty good at it. We had some folks over for dinner and I asked them if they'd like a beer. They were from the UK and I could see from their face they didn't want to insult me, but Bud wasn't beer. I said, I can tell from your face you don't want American beer, how about an amber? I would, however suggest that those who are still funding 401Ks that they continue funding them the same as they have in the past. Changing now could cost you deeply if you miss the probably 20% gain that is going to happen once the mad-king is gone.
Timing the market is *not* a thing that most people get right.

Not only is food picked by labor that is poorly paid, but they are also willing to do the work that most Americans are not. It's hard work.
We grow rice in the US approximately 2% of the global supply. Ironically, much of it is exported. Perhaps that'll change.
The issues with production, harvesting, and distribution of a product with so much changing in the global economy make all of what's going to happen an open question. @npub1vju…zzwd

I wonder if it will hit that quickly. I was thinking rather what would happen is items would vanish from the grocery store shelves. Ultimately the prices are going to skyrocket. We are in such uncharted territory I'm not sure what to think.
