Expecting everything to work for free is like expecting communism to work.
It isn’t sustainable *at scale* without WoT relays, and even then… the costs will rise when there are hundreds of millions of users storing notes+multimedia+repos.
Paid models with Lightning will come. @npub1h0r…fv0g will help deliver that — a few things are in the works currently by @npub1ms9…qa0v. I just hope other client devs push for it too.

I never joined Mastodon because I thought that model was idiotic. Censorship with extra steps, as Rick and Morty would put it.
People bringing that to Nostr with Ditto and everyone cheering it on feels like a backdoor to reinviting censorship is emerging.
Relay moderation is fine, but siloed data is the antithesis of #nostr.
Ditto-like infrastructure is why BlueSky and Mastodon devolved into what they are now.
It’s the tech underneath that matters, not the names. If nostr goes into this direction, it will no longer be “nostr”

Outbox works well across well-connected relays, it’s just disparate relays that don’t even know of each other — they can’t share the NIP-65 event.
If you aren’t aware of relays in other countries then you can’t sync with them. The DHT enables you to discover the other relays. See?

Data portability should be the primary priority of Nostr — it’s what enables freedom and low exit costs… no single server being a monopoly over your data.
E2E communities is client based process via MLS, not server based with Ditto. Ditto and Mastodon are philosophically incorrect and are abhorrent.
The only reason I stick around Nostr is due to the power of data portability.

Most haven’t heard of Nostr, or had a bad experience due to Nostr lacking algorithms and speed (tons of missing posts/client glitches/etc).
It’s nowhere near as advanced as Twitter yet. Once it is, then the price for censorship resistance might not require such a steep cost.
Right now the switching costs are too high: you lose your network and lose many features of Twitter. Reverse-chronological feed with missing notes is primitive compared to X and what comes next.
Once Nostr has all the features normal Twitter has, including consistent speed and feed algorithms, then the true test begins…
