it can seem more complicated at first, but with atproto you choose which parts of the infrastructure you decide to host or delegate. some parts are easier and lightweight to host (such as pds) than others. but for the complex parts (e.g. the appview, which indexes every posts on the atproto) you can reuse the already existing infrastructure, centralized or not (bsky.app, witchsky.app, blacksky.community…)

pls can you connect it to standard.site ? it's an integration for atproto and bluesky users, very easy if you're running wordpress :))))

we'd need accounts to be separated from instances (and the ability to self host our account only, a bit like pdses on atproto)

it's changing: eurosky now allows 8k people to host their data in Europe, you can now host a relay on a rpi, choose between different app views... saying that bluesky isn't decentralized is like saying mastodon.social is centralized

personally, I think atproto architecture is way ahead of activitypub and does almost anything activitypub ever did. what do you mean by saying "bluesky hasn't everything mastodon has" ?

I don't understand what your issue is, you want to reply to this post with your bsky handle? just log into witchsky with your bsky identity
https://witchsky.app/profile/did:plc:rtf3bjc3w2yn4syxtm4r7jt2/post/3mfrp6tovy22g
it's also way easier to switch from pds/appview as it's way more modular than a mastodon instance, you can connect into any appview regardless of where your pds is. you can also change your pds hosting very easily and keeping all of your existing data from any service

it surely is, but nothing technically prevents anyone to crawl data from https://[any_instance]/public/local automatically. It's even worse on AP because you never really delete a post as it's duplicated on a thousands different instances. Someone already did a firehose of activitypub but I can't remember his @

I agree with you, even if permissive data is coming this year. for the appview part, anyone can build his own and pick the data they want from the pds. there's also dozens of different alternatives already, which limits enchittification

how is it different from the fediverse? as long as there's a firehose, anyone can crawl mastodon.social or any other instance and do the same

2026-03-20 10:27:42 UTC

- reply

permissive data/spaces is coming this year, and you can use E2EE messaging germ using your pds. if you want to delete any data, you can just connect to pds.ls and delete any record you want (e.g. all your likes, comments, etc)

2026-03-20 09:57:38 UTC

- reply

are you aware that any record is public on atproto and checkable on pds.ls? there's nothing new .....

if they want to show ads on the appview, people can change to witchsky or blacksky or any other appview
if they want to monetize pds hosting, people can move their account into another pds/selfhost
if they want to show ads within feeds, people can change to another feed
I think any company needs to monetize and find funds to make any project sustainable. ATProto is far ahead of any open and interoperable protocol and is becoming less and less dependent from Bluesky everyday

you just can switch the appview

you still have the choice to follow them or not

I do think that sadly people are less interested about the fediverse than few months ago, even bluesky stagnates

I think it’s not up to mastodon to adopt AT proto but bluesky to adopt activitypub (as it’s the officiel w3c protocol standard)

I’d rather a clean implementation of activitypub than opting out the bridge in a dirty way (not a 2 ways interactions by default)

a shortcut to connect all of my airplay speakers + a music timer to stop music when I sleep
I also have some automations to swap my focus+darkmode mode when I go to the theater (based on my location) and one to swap wallpaper when I go out
