I haven’t seen much of Argentum yet (I haven’t been following things super closely) but yeah. The goals and ideas are laudable and I’d love to contribute but don’t really feel qualified… I haven’t done C++ since college.
Honestly all your projects are impressive, and that’s why I’m continuing to follow you despite your use of tools I personally disagree with.

American, Chinese, it doesn’t really matter. They’re tools built for one purpose: to reduce the capacity for critical thought and sustained learning while getting people to depend on them for more and more of their lives.
I know my arguments are tired too, and I’m not going to stop or derail an objectively impressive project in progress. I just wanted to share my feelings and maybe help you understand the pushback despite you using AI “the right way” and “for good reasons”

how much community building did you miss out on by asking an AI to do it instead of trying to find collaborators?
How much money did you give a giant Silicon Valley corporation that could have gone to other knowledgeable humans?

power and water are one part of the equation. How many similar projects were trained on against the license terms or wishes of the authors?
How much did you legitimize an industry built on theft and control of thought and creativity?
How much learning, knowledge, and growth did you outsource to a subscription that’s inevitably going to become disturbingly expensive the moment AI companies run out of VC funds or think people will start paying the actual cost?

Can you give me some examples of apps that do this? Or maybe more details?
I tried with Mail, Finder, and Music and they all retained their original search strings when I switched between them...

I’ve been saying this for the past few years. Some of the older Macintoshes and early IBM PCs were among the last machines that were simple enough to be understood by one person top-to-bottom.
Consequently these are also the most fun to work on, play with, refurbish, and use.

My first access to the internet was through a Sympatico dial-up account (BC) I believe on a 28.8k modem which was quickly upgraded to 56k. It was a Windows 98 computer, and we used Netscape Navigator 4.
Wild times.

This is a screengrab from Apple’s 2008 introduction of the App Store on the iPhone 3G.
The 30% cut going to Apple has been there since the very beginning. It wasn’t added with IAPs.

thanks for the explanation! It wasn’t clear from the context.
I’m sure Mastodon will get there eventually, or we’ll all end up moving to some fork that does.

I also would appreciate flexible/word-blocking filters at the server/host level.
But maybe I just don’t understand how YouTube does it… Is there a reason you’d want to filter content to be invisible for others but have it be visible for you? Is that just a moderation thing, or is there some other reason you need to see incoming harmful/hateful content?
