A little reminder / tip about how sharing on Mastodon works.
Remember, there's no algorithm. Nothing is "selected" for you. Everything you see in your timeline is things that you specifically follow - people, hashtags, etc. You see the posts of people you follow, plus things from others that they boost.
Hitting the "favourite" button doesn't contribute to this at all. It's a silent nod towards the author of the post you favourited - nobody else sees it, and it doesn't affect who sees the post.
If you liked something - share it! If you hit the "boost" button instead of, or in addition to, the favourite button, then that will share it with people who follow you.
The fediverse runs on boosts - without them, there would be virtually nothing in your timeline to see.
So go ahead and boost more stuff! Your followers will thank you.

My $0.02: it sure looks like NIST is backstopping an attempt by the NSA to get everyone to standardize on cryptography #standards that the #NSA knows how to break.

Yes, they did it before. If you read up on the Dual_EC calamity and its fallout, and how this time it was supposed to be different - open, transparent, secure - then prepare to be disappointed. NIST is playing #Calvinball with their rules for this contest, yanking the rug out from under contenders that appear to be more #secure and better understood, while pushing alternatives that are objectively worse (#weaker encryption, less studied, poorer #performance).
Frankly, I think organizations outside of the #USA would be foolish to trust anything that comes out of #NIST's current work. Well, those inside the USA too, but some of those may be forced by law to use whatever NIST certifies.
[1] Some people think djb is "prickly", not lovable. Oddly, it seems that the only people who say this are those who are wildly incorrect about code/algorithms and are being gently but publicly corrected about by djb at the time

Thank you all for the extremely interesting discussion of this - it's way above my pay grade, but I at least know enough to see that you've pointed out a significant number of oddities in their writeup that aren't justified in the paper itself.

I've had a few bursts of them. Reported, blocked, the accounts disappeared.
They're really telling on themselves with the sheer number they send to a single person. My bursts were each 40-50 PMs in a minute or two.

Early stuff that gets forgotten...
First transmission using IP.
First transmission between different sites/cities.
First use of "@" to separate username and machine name in email (which predated IP).
First use of DNS because of exploding complexity of managing a hosts file internet-wide.
First internet site outside of USA.
First internet site outside of North America.

To me, the whole "H1-B is for when you simply cannot find a qualified citizen/green-card candidate" problem could be solved with what seems to me to be a missing requirement.
If you "can't find" a matching candidate, clearly you've already tried recruiting with generous compensation etc. So if you're forced to go outside the national labour pool, it should obviously be that anyone you hire on an H1-B is right at the top of your compensation, right?
i.e. hire an H1-B engineer, they had better be the highest-paid (or tied for highest) engineer in the company.
If you enforce that, the cheap-labour abuse just goes away...
But of course, every complex problem has a simple, easy to understand wrong answer, so maybe I'm missing something.

#Biden could, and perhaps should, prevent this from happening, by issuing a pre-emptive #pardon to all #military #personnel involved (for their actions in the withdrawal, not for everything they've ever done).

... reminded me of how much I dislike Paul Graham. Not personally; I've never met him. I read a bit of him online way back when, and then bought his book "Hackers & Painters", which was a collection of #essays that everyone was fawning over.
It struck me as an enormous pile of #obvious #generalities in which he spent WAY too much time trying to sound #Serious and #Important and that they were Novel Ideas. It's #garbage.

I don't really get this. An area code featuring 7-digit local numbers gives ~10M possible phone numbers. Greater LA has a population of ~20M - why on earth are 12 area codes needed? Even if they're not all overlayed on the same geography.
When the initial 3 digits indicated a physical facility, maybe this would make sense. But not now; sparse allocation for this reason just isn't necessary.

@npub1lq6…nf7e (who has deep connections inside Google and has worked with them) has been lambasting these "AI" summaries in search results since Google first added them. I'm with him; they are utterly useless, because even if they were correct, you can't just trust them to be so - you need to go back to the original sources and validate it yourself.
In which case, why bother with the summaries in the first place? Just show the original sources as the search results.

Have they made any explicit statements about not pulling a Dymo/HP and preventing 3rd-party filaments from working down the line?
Not many companies would explicitly state that for fear of legal repercussions, but I'm curious. Maybe they're better than most.

I'll take your word for it; as I said, I'm not a Chrome user. And debugging these kinds of weirdo-edge-case-problems is definitely not for the faint-of-heart.
FWIW, I use Firefox and it seems to have no issues with my fairly complicated setup (multiple binaries installed different ways, many profiles, etc).

I downloaded the stable one, and it doesn't appear to have any external dependencies (using objdump). Another program I use an AppImage for shows such dependencies:

That should "just run" on pretty much any Linux x86_64 / AMD64 system. I haven't searched for 32-bit or other architecture versions.
Caveat emptor, etc etc. Sorry, not a Chrome user.
