Yes it’s funny I bought it first with this nice looking hammered finish powdercoat and within a week it was peeling. So I got the black one and it rusts very easily. Apparently it’s a known issue with Remington the last few years.

I got a UPS to back up the power to my fiberoptic modem, router, pc, gaming console and my bitcoin node. It was pretty cool walking up to the wall outlet and yanking the power cord to the UPS and seeing everything still running off battery in less than a tenth of a 60hz cycle. Beet day. 12lb on a 4x4 bed. Not stellar, but not bad. I just have to vacuum seal these tomorrow and they are done. Got a nice feed of baby beets for tonight. And of course the inevitable health scare in the middle of the night tonight when it looks like I’m pissing blood, and forgot I ate a quarter pound of beets lol.
Is the work worth it while the grocery stores are still open? No. Will it be worth it when I can pull them out of the freezer in the middle of winter or in a pinch? Yes.
Carrots, squash, and then pressure canning a hundred pounds of potatoes still to go. Cellaring the other 200lb or so. And trying to get some hunting days in. And a bunch of 50 hour work weeks. Half a cup each of apple cider vinegar, sugar, water, and a tablespoon of dish soap helped empty out a portion of the population of a wasp nest in the yard we couldn’t get to. If getting a critical mass of individuals onboard is hard, getting a critical mass of business owners willing to stick their necks out and stop acting as agents for the state on payday (with at-source income tax deductions) will be next to impossible. I still think we will need to reach a pain point where everyone just stops reporting to work for a couple months. Historically, it’s the only thing that’s ever gotten the politicians’ attention.

Vast swaths of BC and Alberta are bug killed. It’s a big part of the cycle that has led to the huge fires in western Canada for the last several years. But this has been happening as a natural cycle for hundreds of thousands of years. The only difference now is we have these dumb creatures building their infrastructure in the midst of it. And putting out fires/allowing fuel loads to increase. Literally everything that regulation touches has the opposite of the intended effect.

Haha unfortunately that hot tub was the worst consumer purchase I’ve ever made. We financed the purchase of it 12 years ago. Literally one month after I made the last payment on it, after only 8 years of use, I walked past it and did a random check on the water one December day and noticed that the water was only 72°F. No action on the pumps. Just lukewarm chlorinated water. As I opened the inspection panel on the side, I noticed the smell of burnt electrical insulation. I opened the motherboard enclosure, and it was just a mess of charred boards and wires. I’m likely looking at $2500 to get a new board, reinstall the pumps, and get a new cover which is badly needed. Screw that. I have sats to stack. I figure that between the purchase price, the cost of borrowing, additional electrical consumption, treatment chemicals, service calls and parts, this $13,500 CAD purchase ended up being around $23,000. Plus it went through 4 pumps that were all fortunately covered by warranty. The Bluetooth sound system only worked for about a year before I had to replace the Bluetooth receiver. Then a year after that, it died again and the retractable speakers stopped retracting. Then the amp packed it in.
Sure we had some good times in it and some pretty memorable parties with it full of people, but the per use cost likely worked out to between $30-$40. I should have just bought a quad and I’d likely still have it now for hunting and stuff.

I’ll never forget the sense of wonder the first time I ever got my hands on a PC and used it to connect to another computer over a phone line.
It was 1992 and my first wife and I had just moved back to BC after a short 8 month stint in Ontario. We both planned to go back to school at the local college, so my in-laws let us turn half of their detached garage into a suite and live there while we did a year of upgrading.
Shortly after we moved in, I noticed that my father in law had a PC in the home office and I was ecstatic because we never had one at home in the 80’s. I had major FOMO after only getting to mess around on a friend’s Commodore 64 a few times in grade 8 and 9 up till that point.
The computer was a 386 PC running DOS 5 and my brother in law had a copy of iD Software’s first (and pretty much the first ever widely distributed) first person shooter, Wolfenstein 3D. We played that game for days. I just thought it was really cool because it was the first time I had ever seen an actual execution of a first person shooter similar to the dungeon style game I did a hand drawn/handwritten story board and concept for in the early days of Intellivision’s Dungeons and Dragons.
So anyway, weeks went on and we pretty much just gamed. We played Wolf3D and a really basic golf game mostly.
One of the kids in my physics class told me about BBS’s and how he was getting games from other users by connecting to them over his parents’ phone line. He gave me a list of local phone numbers that worked.
I looked on the back panel of the computer we had, and sure enough there was a phone jack to a 14.4 modem. It had never been used. I asked my father in law if he had any manuals and disks that came with the computer, and he said he thought there was a box in the crawl space with all of that stuff. I went digging and ended up finding a few disks and a big fat DOS manual. To do the command line stuff I needed to do to get the modem working, I ended up reading most of it. I had to learn how to install drivers and make folders and move files instead of just gaming.
I was obsessed. After a couple of weeks of reading and staying up late learning how to interact with the machine, I finally had a dial tone.
I will never forget how thrilled I was when I dialled that first number on the piece of paper my friend had given me, heard the annoying modem handshake sound, and boom, there’s a crude menu on the screen that said Okanagan BBS, with a bunch of folder names on it.
It was like a whole new world opened up to me. Books, games, articles, and pixelated girly pics lol.
Only a matter of weeks after I got my introduction to PC connectivity, I found out that my wife had a couple affairs, including a current one with my boss (who was also my best man at our wedding) that stretched back a full year before we even got married. I moved out.
It ended up being another 4 years before life brought me to a place where I could buy my first PC. I promptly corrupted a file in Windows 95 and was down for a month while I learned what I needed to learn to reinstall the operating system. All of the techs at the local computer store were treating computing like some sort of dark art, and they were hesitant to answer my questions. I guess to them, I was a potential repair customer. I said fuck that and was up and running again and designing Quake levels and doing some other fun stuff.
Work took me in directions other than ones related to computing and it was another couple years yet before I learned how to register a domain and build my first website. And that was just prior to yet another major life implosion that left me adrift for a few years without much money and a stable place of residence.
I often wonder what I would have done with computing, web design and coding if life had been a little more stable.
I guess it’s never too late to find out. I did a few company websites for friends over the years, but never had the time to really capitalize on it as a business. I’ve intentionally avoided starting a tech support business in the intervening years because I got remarried and we had kids, and I’ve had to stick with other skills that I could capitalize on faster. I’ve got some skills and have been the resident IT guy at every company I’ve ever worked for. But I just can’t handle fixing dumb shit that people do to their systems. I just don’t get any satisfaction out of that work. My loss I guess lol.

I worked for Davey in the 90’s as a trimmer and a climber but now I’m just coordinating crews, doing business development and doing most of the estimating for this good sized family owned company in northern AB. Lots of driving around looking at trees and land. And lots of power line right of ways/pipeline right of ways.

Ok. Revelations from last night. So like a noob, I had 3 grams and still hadn’t felt anything an hour and a half later. I thought maybe these mushrooms were bunk. So I had another 2 grams, making it the single biggest dose I’ve ever had. Went to sleep at about midnight after a nice night hanging out by the fire.
So at about 3 I woke up to go to the bathroom. Two words: tripping balls. I was aware from previous experiences that the slight feeling of anxiety was expected, so I didn’t let it get to me. But the visuals. Holy shit.
I am convinced that some of the origins of Man’s awareness of a higher power may have been discovered accidentally through chance ingestion of psilocybes. I wasn’t trying to guide the experience at all, but not only were there incredibly complex, colourful and moving patterns moving across my field of view, but they were consistently morphing into two repeating forms. One was a male figure sitting in the lotus position with his hands in a position of prayer. The other was a figure of a woman facing me, with arms outstretched and the thumb and middle finger touching, with the index finger and pinky slightly pointed. Both of them were covered with the patterns and colors, so it’s not like they were photographed. And both were emanating a calmness and sense of peace.
One interesting thing was the presence of fractal geometry. All of the patterns, regardless of how deep I looked into them, were infinitely scaled. And the colors were truly 256 million with a slight chrome finish.
Aside from the visuals that I knew to expect, my main purpose in doing this experiment was to see if there would be any revelations about my self or this world we are living in. The main things I felt as my ego dissolved, the nausea came, and the slight sense of anxiety persisted, was that:
1) we are all a tiny piece of the same consciousness
2) I have made big mistakes in my life and am far from perfect, but my motivations are not self serving or meant to make me appear to the world like something I am not.
I don’t know what to say other than this, other than pros and cons:
Pros:
- Cool visuals and seeing random figures of seemingly spiritual beings, that were emanating a sense of good will toward me.
- Stripping my ego away for a short time and allowing a real analysis of my motivations in how I deal with people.
Cons:
- anxiety
- inability to sleep
- runny nose
- watering eyes
- itchiness (all over)
- upset stomach
- lack of control of the duration of the experience ie having to ride it out, for better or worse.
Would do again? Not likely. I’ve experienced this a few times now, and I just don’t think there’s anything more there to learn. Maybe DMT or acid would be something to try, but I’m not sure I need to see anything otherworldly for now. Dehydrator jerky works really well! My Traeger smoker snob friends didn’t believe it. Also I f you ever find a cheap cured smoked ham, it already has the cure and the smoke done for you and you can just add a bit of pepper to the slices. It’s great!

The few people I’ve tried being an Uncle Jim for didn’t even have the discipline to safely store their passphrases after being instructed specifically how to do it. Good luck having them remember how to generate and sign psbt’s and broadcast tx’s. We have a couple decades to go at least.
