Finally, ZCash is just not fungible. There is a difference in value for that which has been historically shielded and not. Many exchanges that list ZEC will ban you if you actually use the privacy features. So whether or not your ZCash can be used anywhere becomes, much like Bitcoin, a complicated regulatory regime that you don’t know will be used against you until your coins are frozen on some exchange somewhere because someone didn’t like the transaction history.

A major problem with ZCash is the lack of ability to verify the supply in the Orchard. If one of the recent inflation bugs were exploited we would have no idea. Or if the trusted setup ceremony were somehow compromised, they might have been able to print an undisclosed amount of ZEC then. Someone could have printed a billion ZCash and there’s no way to tell unless they unshield it all. ZCash’s founder also said that they can make it traceable enough for law enforcement. They tweeted it in public, in fact (screenshot attached). ZCash’s people, including Zooko in the Tweet referenced, have repeatedly called themselves cypherpunks but then asked us to personally trust them institutionally with the initial bootstrapping of the coin, many questionable and complicated migrations away from that initial bootstrapping, potentially offering LEO assistance, and they all have incredibly close ties with Israel and the surveillance state. Even if I did trust them (I do not, not a single bit) humans are fallible. The idea that I am expected to accept that the supply is permanently unauditable and has not been compromised by greed or simple human error is ridiculous. I simply do not want to use the products of anyone that acts and talks like these people. Their words, their actions, and their absolutely disgusting physiognomies (additional picture attached) do not inspire confidence in me.

This is the best criticism of eCash. I like Paul and his criticisms of Lightning are excellent, and drivechain is definitely a better model for scaling Bitcoin than LN, but the actual implementation seems to not have us ending up with money that “just works”. I need money that just works in the same way consistently, not a toolbox.

if the vast majority of Bitcoin users reject my basic ability to do commerce, how can I use or promote Bitcoin? There is not a way to block someone from sending you Bitcoin. Transations on the Bitcoin ledger are immutable, permissionless, and unfortunately public.
There is a fix for this — people need to lobby Bitcoin Core and have them implement proven fungibility features, of which a side effect is privacy, using ring signatures and full-chain membership proofs.

If Core decides they want to implement FCMP we could have it on a reasonable timeline. The idea that Bitcoin does not change is, frankly, retarded. Bitcoin has changed, and so far most of the changes have been done to accommodate things that did not see widespread usage or advance Bitcoin’s central role as currency or the cornerstone of a new global financial system.

Tornado Cash stopped being useful when regulators took a short look at it, and Tether has since frozen literally billions of dollars of USDT. but there's additional hazards with this kind of opt-in privacy, in that the side chain can end up like Tornado Cash, where you are legally engaging in an overt act of money laundering by moving Bitcoin in or out of it. If fungibility is the basic property of the currency then privacy is not an overt act of laundering, privacy is a side effect of fungibility that you happen to benefit from. This also leads to situations like ZCash where they get listed on an exchange but then when you actually use the shielded addresses to have privacy, their AML controls require them to ban you from the exchange because it looks like money laundering. Reasonable fungibility only occurs when it is universal and not opt-in. The Bitcoin on the “fungible side chain” would then have a different price than the normal Bitcoin, paradoxically reducing Bitcoin’s fungibility.

I was forced for many years to use Monero in daily business when I would have much rather been using Bitcoin because is has not been fungible for me, and its lack thereof has interfered in my business and life. There were many opportunities for Bitcoiners to demand Core actually address the issues that prevent the daily use of Bitcoin as money by those of us that don’t have bank accounts. They have repeatedly rejected this to instead pretend some shithole village in Latin America has adopted daily use of the Lightning Network. They, of course, have not, they simply pretended to do so for long enough that they can get free handouts of Bitcoin from drooling libertarians which they have since sold. All so that the startup grifters who pay their crypto influencer tard wranglers can convince gullible venture capitalists that a handful of retarded third worlders in favelas doing a couple custodial LN transactions is a bullish sign for Bitcoin.
Meanwhile, the chart tells the real story. Bitcoin is losing steam as a speculative asset. This is potentially the final cycle. The last chance for Bitcoiners to transmute the massive influx of institutional capital we saw from 2021-2025 into a product that actually has real utility and serves the needs of people who want to use blockchains as their main financial ledger. The last bull run was the most pathetic cycle yet, 69k to 126k top to top.
There’s been zero consideration among Bitcoiners that faith in Bitcoin’s “inevitability” has been poisonous to actual adoption, and that Bitcoin is potentially poised to permanently settle at a major loss when the lack of an additional significant ATH refutes the power log scale delusion. Past performance is not indicative of future results.
Some people at the top of Bitcoin do realize that the foundational market opportunities that were missed represent existential threats to the future of Bitcoin, which is why so much accommodation was given to NFTs via Ordinals (to a complete failure, ord.io just shut down last month) and now Citrea, which is bringing EVM compatibility to Bitcoin. The problem is that these are settled markets with winners already chosen. Bitcoin is not going to be a clearinghouse for NFTs or smart contracts. Other chains that decided to implement useful features in a timely manner already won those games, and Ord’s failure shows that Bitcoin’s historical significance is not enough to attract participants when you show up many years too late.
Bitcoin has to be money, not only because it was the original vision of Satoshi, but because Bitcoiners have rejected the opportunity for the blockchain to be used for any other application in a timely manner. Every real world use of blockchain has gone to other chains, because idiotic Bitcoiners turned their nose up and sneered about “monkey jpegs” as other blockchains were garnering actual users and creating sustainably valuable fee economies. Just as it was too late for Ordinals to succeed in a settled NFT market, Citrea’s attempt to create an EVM contract market via Bitcoin is not realistic after so many entrenched alternatives.
Every business I have seen that uses Monero and Bitcoin always sees more Monero usage. People actually want to use Monero as currency. Fungibility is the primary concern of people who actually use blockchains for their daily finances. I don’t have a bank account, and I can tell you that it is my primary concern. I am using Monero because it is fungible, and I am not using Bitcoin because it makes it impossible to run a stable business. People that tell you Bitcoin is better as money aren’t even capable of being qualified to make this statement, because they always still have bank and investment accounts. They are still on the grid of the legacy financial system. Bitcoin has been relegated to something I simply hold, and I increasingly ask myself why I would continue holding it over something that I actually find useful. Other people much less ideologically aligned with Satoshi’s vision than me out there must be asking themselves the same thing.
Bitcoiners have a final opportunity to make a push to become money, but they have to abandon chasing markets they have already lost. There is only one way to save Bitcoin, and that’s for Core to create a fungible currency using Monero’s model of Full Chain Membership Proofs. I truly love Bitcoin, and I wish I could be using it on a day to day basis. But Core has consistently rejected the implementation of any feature that could make Bitcoin useful as money in a timely manner, while there is still money to be made and viable businesses to be integrated with Bitcoin. They have historically rejected any opportunity to salvage this situation.
I believe we approach the last window for Bitcoin to become money, instead of a historical marvel in the development of blockchains. Grifting off the history of Nakamato consensus for so long while trying to shove “solutions” that the market has repeatedly rejected down people’s throats has not worked. It’s time for Bitcoiners to stop scamming venture capitalists and implement what the market actually has demonstrated it wants in a currency.

I’ve bought the drivechain idea. I understand you have issues with miner involved governance, and I admit that these are problems, but at the very least the planned desired drivechains for geographic scaling and zk-Snarks can be set up early on the eCash fork when there is very little miner involvement outside of really committed people.
In a way, the necessity of involving miners in governance might be good, because miners could have served as a check on the retarded and corrupt behavior of Core but have abdicated from this responsibility. So demonstrating to miners that there is potential ecosystem value in being more involved in governance is potentially a great thing.
Regardless I feel the issues are nuanced beyond my understanding. I am not certain drivechain will work! Your criticism seems potentially legitimate. I am, however, certain that Lightning is not the solution we need and it is time to de-ossify Bitcoin, specifically clear out the dysfunctional parasites suckling on the teat of venture capital who have sabotaged it, and put new people at the helm of the ship. Even if the new people completely fail at the assigned task, getting rid of the people that have so catastrophically failed and wasted so much time and wealth is a virtue in itself. those people are, by and large, not using Lightning, they are using custodial wallets like Chivo and you have no proof that the majority of the transactions actually resolve on the Lightning network. When there is a custodial-to-custodial transfer, the custodians can settle up the difference however they please. It’s just a cell of fiat in a database at that point.
If any significant body of people were running their own Lightning nodes, the failure rate would be massive and it would crater the reputation. You’re not touting the Lightning network’s success here, you are touting the success of simple transaction writes to SQL databases. Those are indeed very stable and useful. But they aren’t Lightning.

It was hardly separate if Henry VIII had to beg the papacy for a divorce (and be denied). Also the Church operated as a fifth column of government by encouraging its adherents to seditiously sabotage any government which it asserted did not have the divine right of kings. If it was separate it would not have delegated divine authority by implication through blessing the rule of monarchs.

And CLINK cannot have serious privacy, because there is no perfect forward secrecy on Nostr messages and LN’s mix protocols are a joke (a custom onion routing protocol with no traffic are trivial to autocorrelate) CLINK is very cool, it is the *best lightning implementation* but that’s still like being the smartest kid on the short bus to me.
