I see that Stella Creasy is accusing me of leading a pitchfork mob against her, because I opined that she is less likeable and more hypocritical than the wild parakeet she mistook for an escaped pet.
For those who don’t know, Creasy is an elected politician and self-proclaimed ‘old-fashioned feminist’ who is ‘still fighting the patriarchy’. She’s more than once publicly defined herself against me (and my reaction was not to accuse her of leading a mob, even though I was probably averaging a dozen death threats a day at the point when the article below appeared.)
I thought it might be instructive for those of us who don’t share Creasy’s brand of ‘feminism’ to examine her campaigning record, so we can learn to do better.
Creasy wants women admitted to the male-only, exclusive, London-based private members Garrick Club, a change that would benefit rather privileged women like Creasy. Creasy is a mother who wants better accommodations for working mothers, a change that would benefit Creasy. Creasy takes selfies at a men-only Muslim march because that reminds everyone how non-racist she is, which benefits Creasy. Creasy asserts that ‘trans women are women’, which keeps her in good odour with her party’s most aggressive activists, and benefits Creasy.
However, keeping cross-dressing heterosexual men out of nurses’ changing rooms doesn’t benefit Creasy, because Creasy has never had to mop up other people’s piss, blood and vomit at work. Challenging the notion that a male basketball player becomes a girl if he says he is doesn’t benefit Creasy, who has no sporting ambitions. Speaking up against the patriarchy as practised by non-white men doesn’t benefit Creasy, who wants those selfie-opportunities. Criticising an ideological movement that persecutes, harasses and openly threatens women who don’t believe some women have penises wouldn't benefit Creasy, because she's already fully-signed up to self-id, where any man who says he's a woman must be taken at his word.
As the late Gloria Steinem said: ‘“Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It's about making life more fair for women everywhere.’
Creasy the patriarchy-challenger is provably more than happy to cosy up to men and misogynist movements when it suits her public profile and career advancement, no matter the harms those men might be causing less privileged women. By Steinem’s definition, what Stella espouses is not feminism, but Creasyism, and I suggest the emblem for this brave new rights movement should be an indignant parakeet with severely ruffled feathers.

Being biologically female means having a body that is observably organised to produce large gametes (eggs), as opposed to a body organised to produce small gametes (sperm). A woman is female whether her eggs have been fertilised or not. A man can never be female.

Please explain what differentiates a trans woman from 'a man in a dress and make up', because I've been playing close attention to trans activists for a decade now and the most common explanation I've been given is 'he says he's a woman, so play along or you're evil.'
Runner up explanations:
A man is a trans woman if he's put in a lot of effort into looking like a woman. However, a man who's made no such effort is just as valid a trans woman as one who does. Trans women with beards and penises are completely valid.
The existence of men and women with differences of sexual development ('intersex' people) prove that a completely different group of people who don't have such disorders are trans if they say they are.
The true mark of who's a man or a woman isn't biological sex, but the untestable gender identity that resides in all human beings, whether or not they believe in it. At the same time, trans people must be given easy, automatic access to cross-sex hormones and surgeries so they can alter themselves to more closely resemble the opposite biological sex.

Judge Sandy Kemp and the Judicial Office need to explain exactly how this bogus quote made its way into the ruling. Misrepresentations of the Forstater ruling are commonplace in the trans activist community, but for this to turn up in an actual court ruling is truly shocking.

De Beauvoir, as you’d know if you’d actually read her, was noting that to be accorded the status of a ‘real’ woman in a male dominated society, girls are pressured to adopt and display behaviours that might feel inauthentic and restrictive. You, meanwhile, are siding with women’s oppressors in stating a woman is anyone who performs an often pornified male idea of what a woman should look or behave like. It is not only highly regressive to decree that femininity is the true measure of femaleness, it is precisely what de Beauvoir was arguing against.

She could have contacted me privately any time to say her views had changed, if they have. I'd have been entirely supportive. What she's chosen to do instead is yet another bit of public brand repositioning, without talking to me, but using me for her purpose. It's getting old.

2025-09-29 09:54:39 UTC

I'm seeing quite a bit of comment about this, so I want to make a couple of points.
I'm not owed eternal agreement from any actor who once played a character I created. The idea is as ludicrous as me checking with the boss I had when I was twenty-one for what opinions I should hold these days.
Emma Watson and her co-stars have every right to embrace gender identity ideology. Such beliefs are legally protected, and I wouldn't want to see any of them threatened with loss of work, or violence, or death, because of them.
However, Emma and Dan in particular have both made it clear over the last few years that they think our former professional association gives them a particular right - nay, obligation - to critique me and my views in public. Years after they finished acting in Potter, they continue to assume the role of de facto spokespeople for the world I created.
When you've known people since they were ten years old it's hard to shake a certain protectiveness. Until quite recently, I hadn't managed to throw off the memory of children who needed to be gently coaxed through their dialogue in a big scary film studio. For the past few years, I've repeatedly declined invitations from journalists to comment on Emma specifically, most notably on the Witch Trials of JK Rowling. Ironically, I told the producers that I didn't want her to be hounded as the result of anything I said.
The television presenter in the attached clip highlights Emma's 'all witches' speech, and in truth, that was a turning point for me, but it had a postscript that hurt far more than the speech itself. Emma asked someone to pass on a handwritten note from her to me, which contained the single sentence 'I'm so sorry for what you're going through' (she has my phone number). This was back when the death, rape and torture threats against me were at their peak, at a time when my personal security measures had had to be tightened considerably and I was constantly worried for my family's safety. Emma had just publicly poured more petrol on the flames, yet thought a one line expression of concern from her would reassure me of her fundamental sympathy and kindness.
Like other people who've never experienced adult life uncushioned by wealth and fame, Emma has so little experience of real life she's ignorant of how ignorant she is. She'll never need a homeless shelter. She's never going to be placed on a mixed sex public hospital ward. I'd be astounded if she's been in a high street changing room since childhood. Her 'public bathroom' is single occupancy and comes with a security man standing guard outside the door. Has she had to strip off in a newly mixed-sex changing room at a council-run swimming pool? Is she ever likely to need a state-run rape crisis centre that refuses to guarantee an all-female service? To find herself sharing a prison cell with a male rapist who's identified into the women's prison?
I wasn't a multimillionaire at fourteen. I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous. I therefore understand from my own life experience what the trashing of women's rights in which Emma has so enthusiastically participated means to women and girls without her privileges.
The greatest irony here is that, had Emma not decided in her most recent interview to declare that she loves and treasures me - a change of tack I suspect she's adopted because she's noticed full-throated condemnation of me is no longer quite as fashionable as it was - I might never have been this honest.
Adults can't expect to cosy up to an activist movement that regularly calls for a friend's assassination, then assert their right to the former friend's love, as though the friend was in fact their mother. Emma is rightly free to disagree with me and indeed to discuss her feelings about me in public - but I have the same right, and I've finally decided to exercise it.

The trans umbrella stretches over a wide array of people who have virtually nothing in common with each other, eg, trauma-experienced and often same-sex attracted teenagers who believe transition is the route to happiness and are undergoing irreversible surgeries and drug treatments (extremely vulnerable) and adult straight men with a cross-dressing fetish who retain their genitalia and are demanding access to all women’s protected spaces (not remotely vulnerable, but thoroughly pandered to, at the expense of women and girls.)

Trans people already have all the rights everyone else in society has, but some (not all) trans people demand that women give up rights: the right to single-sex spaces, to fair sport and to freedom of speech. No marginalised group has ever demanded that rights be stripped from other protected group, and no other supposedly marginalised group has ever been indulged by politicians, police and elite institutions to the extent the trans lobby has.

This is a very old straw man argument. It is precisely because men and women are biologically different, and because women have been historically oppressed due to that biological difference, that feminism was necessary.

Words are not violence. When you pretend that views that oppose your own are violence, you are justifying the use of actual violence towards the speaker.
Gender ideology’s reliance on tropes and slogans like ‘words are violence’, its constant rationalisation and justification of using force against opponents and its preference for enforcing compliance through fear rather than permitting debate, are straight out of fascism’s playbook.
‘The function of propaganda is . . . not to weigh and ponder the rights of different people, but exclusively to emphasize the one right which it has set out to argue for. Its task is not to make an objective study of the truth, in so far as it favors the enemy, and then set it before the masses with academic fairness; its task is to serve our own right, always and unflinchingly.’
The words are Hitler’s, but I must have seen trans activists say the same thing, barely rephrased, a thousand times. Your movement seeks to remove rights from others. It is anti-truth and critical thinking, pro-violence, pro-dehumanisation of those who disagree with you, and you are so lacking in self-awareness you cannot see that you are precisely what you pretend to hate.

Gladwell’s career wouldn’t have been destroyed if he’d spoken out against the glaring unfairness, not to mention dangers, of allowing men to compete in women’s sport. He’d have faced loss of approval from the cultural elite and received activist blowback, and even that wouldn’t have come with the tsunami of death and rape threats women face when they speak.
Non-famous people, mostly women, girls and gay people, have genuinely had their careers and indeed lives destroyed for saying what Gladwell was too pusillanimous to say, and Gladwell didn’t lift a finger in their defence. Like many well-known liberals, he was happy to watch members of the great unwashed bullied, traduced and defamed, fine with the erosion of freedom of speech, comfortable with young women being robbed of sporting honours and facing serious injury, because he valued his own standing and security more highly than acting on the feeble promptings of his conscience.
A rash of condescending men will swarm my mentions when I post this to tell me I should be pleased about Gladwell’s cautious backtracking. No. He hasn’t changed. He’s merely sensed a shift in what it’s acceptable to say and feels safe to align himself with the new consensus, excuses for his previous behaviour to the fore. He isn’t an ally, he’s a weathervane.
Changing sides years late, and only after you’ve realised the non-elite opposition is winning, isn’t a mark of integrity but of arse-covering. Those whose overriding focus is remaining in good odour with the in crowd can never be trusted. Gender identity ideology has been the modern arts world’s McCarthyism, and all Gladwell’s done is reveal himself as a man who’d have named names, but felt a bit uncomfortable about it afterwards.

That female prisoners shouldn’t be incarcerated with violent men and male sex offenders?
That women should remain a protected class in law, because they have sex-specific needs and issues?
That language should reflect reality rather than ideological jargon, especially in a medical context?
That women shouldn’t be harassed, persecuted or fired for refusing to pretend humans can change sex?
That women should not be threatened with violence and rape when they assert their rights?
That freedom of speech and belief are essential to a pluralistic democratic society?
That troubled minors, especially those who are gay, autistic and trauma-experienced, should be given mental health support instead of irreversible surgeries and drug treatments on non-existent evidence of benefit?
That gay people shouldn’t be pressured to include the opposite sex in their dating pools, nor should they be smeared as ‘genital fetishists’ when they don’t?
That cross-dressing heterosexual male fetishists aren’t actually oppressed, but having the time of their lives piggybacking off gender identity ideology?
That said ideology, and the privileged, blinkered fools pushing it because they suffer zero consequences themselves, have done more damage to the political left’s credibility than Trump and Farage could have achieved in a century?
Let me have your thoughts.

I’ll never understand why a movement intent on removing protected spaces for women and children attracts so many men who appear to wish or enact harm on women and children.

People have written tweets, worn T-shirts and carried placards not only calling me a transphobe, but calling for my death. A horror novel gleefully celebrated my imagined death. I neither sued any of these individuals, nor did I whine about any of them while doing book promotion.

I see Nicola Sturgeon is once again complaining that I posted a picture of myself wearing a T-shirt with her name on it and the legend 'Destroyer of Women's Rights.' Apparently this didn't 'elevate the debate.'
Is there a clinical term for an individual who has extreme thinness of skin when it comes to their own perceived hurts, coupled with a rhino-hide when it comes to the fear and suffering of others?
I'm thinking in particular of the two women Isla Bryson raped, who had to watch their First Minister squirm and smirk on TV as she tried to avoid admitting he was a man; of the five survivors of male violence who were ready to give evidence to Sturgeon's committee on gender self-ID, but were told to put their concerns in writing while seventeen trans-identified people appeared in person; of the mother of a young girl with a learning disability who campaigned against self-ID because she wanted her daughter to be guaranteed same sex intimate care, should she need it (the mother was presumably one of those female opponents Sturgeon calls 'shrill' and 'hysterical' in her memoir); of the ten-year-old girl sexually assaulted in a public bathroom by a 6'5" paedophile who served his jail sentence in a women's prison because he called himself 'Katie'; of Sandie Peggie, forced to discuss her own menstrual history in public to justify not wanting to undress in view of a 6ft straight cross-dresser in the nurses' changing room; of Marion Millar, dragged into court because she tweeted a picture of suffragette ribbons; of the Scottish rape crisis centres reliant on government funding who were pressured to admit trans-identified males into their services if they wanted funding to continue.
When Sturgeon refers to an 'elevated debate', she means a discussion that takes place within a tiny, smug bubble from which regular women suffering real life consequences of her policies are firmly excluded. These faceless ants are loftily dismissed as bigots, or, to be more precise: 'transphobic, misogynistic, homophobic, maybe racist as well.'
Nicola, you hated the T-shirt picture because you couldn't ignore it, as you'd ignored so many other women trying to make you understand their concerns. Appeals to your empathy, your intelligence and your compassion all failed. Apparently the only way to get through to you is through your vanity.

When this madness ends, which it will, one of the ugliest things to look back on will be how women weren't even allowed to the dignity of owning their sex-specific trauma. The misogyny is simply breathtaking.

Being a woman isn't an essence, it's a material, provable fact. I'm not a female human being because society or history made me one, or because I picked the 'woman' category on some metaphysical spreadsheet. I'm a woman because I was born with the equipment to produce large gametes.
My biology isn't my destiny unless I'm unfortunate enough to live in a society like Afghanistan where my femaleness is punished from birth. My biology does, however, mean I am likely to have experiences no man ever will.
If I'd been raised by robots in outer space who had no understanding of social categories or gendered norms I'd still provably be a woman, not a man. I'd certainly suffer some deprivation from not associating with other humans, but on the upside, I'd never have to listen to pseudo-intellectual drivel like this.

A large number of people (mostly men, in my experience) who're sympathetic to some of women's opposition to gender identity ideology, nevertheless think it's cruel to point out that a trans-identified man looks like a man, and unkind not to 'respect' his pronouns. They think these are 'compromises' women should be prepared to make. 'What does it matter?' they say. 'How does it hurt you?'
The psychological effects of being coerced, manipulated or pressured into doing something that is against a person's own beliefs or values are well known. 'Moral injury' occurs when a person is forced to betray deep-held convictions, or stand in silence while those convictions are being betrayed. The individual feels transgressed at a core level. The inevitable consequences are stress, anxiety and anger.
Workplaces across the west have imposed a Kafkaesque situation on women. A belief system most people consider nonsensical, but which, in elite circles, has become almost a religion, has been imposed from on high. Women are being persecuted and punished for not pretending they think men can change sex. The policing of pronouns, and the harassment and shaming of women who won't pretend they can't recognise a man when they see one, is merely the tip of genderism's gigantic, threatening iceberg.
Any man who seeks to force women to play along with the fantasy that he's female is engaging in a typically male power play. At worst, he will suffer narcissistic injury from her non-compliance, but that doesn't make him objectively vulnerable. The non-compliant woman, though, suffers lasting moral injury by being forced to participate daily in a lie - a lie, moreover, that constitutes a fundamental threat to her own rights to privacy, dignity and safety.
It has been profoundly illuminating to see how many people - possibly because their own values spring, not from a place of rationality or true conviction, but from fashion and self-interest - see male narcissistic injury as so very much more worthy of compassion than the moral injuries suffered by women.

98% of sex offenders are male, irrespective of how the men 'identify'. In the UK, a higher proportion of convicted sex offenders are found among trans-identifying men than in the general male prison population.
Time and again, some of the loudest and most aggressive activists in what you call the 'trans movement' have turned out to be dangerous and/or depraved. Sarah Jane Baker. Stephen Ireland. Peter Bright. Eric Joyce. Gordon Pike. Lexi Secker. David Challenor. Aiden Bunag. How many more rotten apples need to turn up before you accept that you've got a problem?
Every rational person can see that gender identity ideology offers predatory men opportunities and camouflage. If you genuinely cared about vulnerable people, especially children, you'd be sorting out your movement's very poor track record on rooting out the abusers lurking in your ranks, and stop pretending that pro-safeguarding people are the enemy.

When you tell a woman she must pretend a man is a woman, you’re asserting the right to control her speech and perception of reality, while also trivialising and devaluing her female-specific experience. You’re asking her to agree that ‘woman’ is a concept men can embody at will.

Narcissists can’t do humour. You have to have a stable sense of self to laugh at yourself. If your self image is so fragile it requires other human beings to become flattering mirrors, the slightest distortion in a reflection feels like a potentially lethal attack.

It isn't the Supreme Court's job to go house to house and make hot chocolate for every trans person who's disappointed to learn that women have rights, too.

2025-06-06 09:52:21 UTC

The misrepresentation in certain sections of the media of what the UK Supreme Court's recent ruling actually means is outrageous.
The ruling clarified that women and girls have sex-based rights under British law, and that those rights haven't changed since women gained them.
Trans activist lobby groups lied about what the law said. They claimed trans-identified men were entitled to everything women were entitled to, under the law. This false interpretation, which removed sex-based rights from women and girls and gave trans-identified men additional rights, may have been imposed upon large sections of society, but it was always illegal, as countless legal experts and grassroots women's groups fought to have recognised.
The Supreme Court restored to women rights they'd lost in practice. Trans-identified men lost nothing in law, because they'd never had the rights they claimed they had. The media types now hyperventilating in print because trans people's rights have been 'reduced' are still lying. Nothing has been taken from trans-identified people except a false belief, and women have simply regained what they should have had all along.
