I spent my 14th birthday money on an expensive Photoshop User magazine subscription to hone my expertise in a pirated copy of the software.
At 16, I would drive to the new Barnes & Noble, buy a coffee, and take advantage of its tolerance of people reading magazines they did not buy while sipping. Computer Arts, Net, and related titles motivated my career selection.
My civics teachers in high school required a $5 student subscription to Newsweek to discuss the cover story in class each week.

I was a precocious reader and loved magazines more than books as a kid. I looked forward to getting Highlights and Boys’ Life in the mail, addressed to me. I spent most of my weekly library time with National Geographic instead of Dr Suess. I binged years of Better Homes and Gardens at my grandparents’ one summer. I got thru Reader’s Digest one poo at a time, just like my father. I spent my 11th birthday money on subscriptions to Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, and PC World.

So much of what people praise the Next Generation Internet program can be attributed to @npub1n8y…l96n’s grant program design.
As @npub1p89…f466 noted, NLnet took public grant money beyond the typical institutions and consortiums that could apply for it and made it accessible to the individual experts and small teams actually doing the work regardless of where they live in the world. These grants likely have outperformed all other EU tech funding in terms of return-on-investment.

While hearing the EU Commission’s perspective is useful, this is a room where the Commission should be listening more than talking.
I would like to have heard how the experts in the room could better engage with the Commission in influencing policy.
Most of the insights from the morning’s panel discussions were not reflected in the strategy outline shared. Commercialization and AI were not mentioned by those experts as top challenges.

I will attend the Next Generation Internet Forum in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.
