@npub1lh5…n08y it looks like the “Censor text” setting is on for your podverse. It uses a big open source list of words to obscure with * when enabled. Here is a screenshot of where it can be disabled. I’m pretty sure it is turned off by default on all fresh installs of Podverse. Maybe there was a version released a long time ago where it was on by default though. Hope that helps.

Worst case scenario to prevent Podverse from getting removed from Google Play is we'd need to disable Android Auto...which is a pretty bad scenario.
Going to try adding test requirement info into the release notes, and hopefully some human on the other side at Google will see it and realize what needs to be done. Not sure if there is a better way to get this test info to a tester...

Is it even possible to contact a human being at Google Play who can explain what the issue is? Who can explain why they are accepting some apps with "Draw over apps" as an AA requirement, but not Podverse? Who can confirm if they're even trying to accept the permission in their tests? Seems like all we ever get is a template response to our appeals that sheds no light beyond the initial rejection.

⚠️ Maintenance Tonight ⚠️
We will be performing server maintenance around 8pm US Pacific time. The mobile app will only work in offline mode during this time. Expected downtime is ~30 minutes.
We've choosen Friday night as it is one of our lowest traffic times.
The goal of this work is to further optimize our database, by dropping unnecessary, bulky indexes and columns, and adding more efficiently designed tables.

Have any devs resolved this problem on Android before? I'm not seeing a way to increase the number of redirects allowed by Android OS, so the only fix seems to be to follow each redirect separately then load the final url in the downloader directly.

Some podcasts use up to 6 tracking related redirects before their server finally delivers the file to you.
If you're noticing some podcasts failing to download on Podverse for Android (but playback by streaming works), we are running into a "too many redirects" error with our downloader library.
We're investigating a way to fix it in 4.16.2.

We're actually having server performance issues ever since I deployed a change to our API 14 hrs ago last night...the change seems pretty damn innocuous so not sure why it would cause an issue. There may be some outages as we try to debug this.

This release has a MAJOR fix for Android storage issues. Offline listening has been broken for a long time, but should finally work now.

@npub175e…fk4c just set `excludeCacheBust=true` on the Podcast table for your feed, re-parsed, and it seems to work now. Sorry for the trouble!
A long time ago I asked if a cacheBust url param was common for podcast apps, and a couple devs said yes. It's clearly not an ideal practice though as you shouldn't have to worry about disallowing url params.

@npub175e…fk4c I think I know what is going wrong. We add a cacheBust url parameter by default to the end of each request, as we had issues with getting cached versions of RSS feeds in the past. It looks like your feed (feeds?) are strict about not allowing URL params. There is a flag in our db I can set to fix this I think. Any idea how many of your feeds this might affect?

hey @npub1vfl…nqkg sorry I missed this. Do you know if you are using our old Umbrel node address, or our newer Alby address?
I have been trying to retire the old Umbrel node as keeping up with balancing has been extra work and I'm trying to reduce the number of things we have to maintain...instead we're letting Alby handle it, and we move our sats from Alby into our cold storage wallet every couple weeks.

@npub1y6j…fn6l sorry for the trouble. We definitely want CarPlay support to be stable.
I'm not sure I am 100% following the steps that lead to this crash. Which steps are happening by pressing the phone, and which steps are happening by pressing the CarPlay display? Could you maybe restate them as an ordered list of steps? like 1) ... 2) ... 3) ... crash? If we can reproduce the bug it greatly improves our chances of fixing it.
Also, does it happen with every podcast, or a specific one?

Hey everyone! I want to apologize for being less available for Podverse for ~3 weeks now. At first I was preoccupied with the holidays, then I picked up a side-project to help pay the bills.
I quit my day-job back in October to focus on Podverse full-time, and my budget was running low, so I needed to pick up some work on the side. I am trying to get back into Podverse now and should be able to be more active with support and development again.

@npub1xv3…k75q @npub1egv…yn6g it’s difficult for us to say…could be an Alby problem, or could be a Fountain problem. Maybe a Podverse problem but if it’s specifically Fountain addresses that seems less likely, unless the addresses we are using for those episodes are out of date.

🚨 ATTN PODVERSE LISTENERS 🚨
There is a serious bug in v4.15.1 where your boost message will not be sent with your boost.
The transaction will still be sent successfully, but the message you type will be missing.
This will be fixed in v4.15.2. I'm shipping the update to prod this afternoon, but it takes 2-3 days for App Store and Google Play to publish a new version, and ~7 days for F-Droid to publish a new version.

Had the app opened and happened to catch our new "in-app notifications" feature after Bowl After Bowl went live :)
These in-app notifications should appear when a new episode is released or a livestream goes live for a podcast you are subscribed to for notifications.

Popularity tracking for music is now enabled on Podverse 📈
If you have "popularity tracking" enabled, your listens will be counted by our system and will boost the ranking of music that appears in Podverse.
If you do not have tracking enabled, but would like to, you can do so by going to More > Settings > Popularity Tracking > Enable popularity tracking

@npub1dft…ta3d searching for music is *definitely* tricky, and something we need to solve. I think we need Publisher RSS feeds so we can group multiple RSS feeds under 1 artist (or under multiple artists). That is a new concept though and would require RSS host adoption.

@npub1zvp…6k7h ah ok, got it. well hmm...I just tried reproducing the bug on that version with Android 13, but it seems to be working properly.
However, if I have an "Add by RSS" episode loaded in the player, and then close and reopen the app, I get the prompt to play the last non-"Add by RSS" episode I played before that.
We have feature limitations with Add by RSS feeds, that we're hoping to fix by mid-January, but in the meantime, if this isn't just an Add by RSS feed issue, then...

Is this issue happening for podcasts that you searched for on Podverse, or podcasts you added using "Add by RSS"?
Do you have a Podverse Premium membership? If yes, and it has expired, then that can lead to a variety of problems, this possibly being one. (We need to add more graceful handling of membership expiration...)

"shuffle tracks" is actually a good example of why the <podcast:medium> "music" tag is so helpful in music feeds. When you're playing podcasts, a "shuffle episodes" button is not usually needed, but "shuffle tracks" is standard for music playback, so apps need to know if a track is "music" or "podcast"

We have been talking about a Music tab, and it's an interesting challenge. The core of Podverse is a podcast app, and deeper still Podverse is a podcast clip-sharing app. We're hesitant to remove Clips from the bottom, and people have said they like Episodes for a quick list of the latest episodes.
An option would be letting people set which tabs are on the bottom, which is doable but a fairly big programming task due to how navigation stacks work.

@npub1xv3…k75q @npub18ej…7x7w I broke our feed parser for about 12 hours 16-17th of this month 🤦‍♂️ I just manually corrected the feed in PV. If you notice other feeds lacking updates please let us know.
@npub1s0l…zquj i guess our “reparse feeds X seconds ago” job didn’t work? I wonder if the fix I added in our parsers wasn’t deployed yet when the parsers were rerunning? Or not all the parsers were updated?

@npub1xsl…ku66 it looks like the "voice pitch algorithm" we are using is only on iOS, so Android should have a flat EQ by default afaik.

There are still a bunch of small changes for Music we'll be making this weekend. One of them is changing the audio algorithm, as we think the "podcast/voice" setting may be making the music tracks too loud and not EQ'd properly...also have some more UI improvements planned.

Podverse Music is now available on all platforms in v4.15.0 Beta 🛠️
There are MANY changes to the player in this release. One of the biggest was adding "auto-play next episode from podcast", "auto-play next track from album", and "auto-play next item in playlist".
There are hopefully some bug fixes too. Any help testing would be greatly appreciated!

hey @npub1gup…q5pf I'm sorry for the trouble. Are you using the Apple, Google Play, or F-Droid version?
This seems to happen randomly unfortunately for a small % of listeners whenever we update the app 🤦‍♂️ I haven't identified a root cause yet.
Some ppl report the issue goes away after restarting their phone, or if that doesn't work, deleting and reinstalling the app. Do you have Podverse Premium? If you do it should auto-restore your subscriptions after reinstall. We can give you a free membership

Tbh I personally never use Siri (I don't even have CarPlay), and the only AirPods functions I use are play/pause. Could you explain the features you're looking for more?
We actually just added handling for Google Play commands recently ("play <podcast name> in Podverse"), as it was required by Google to release Android Auto. We could probably reuse much of that logic for a Siri implementation...

@npub16yk…gh74 it's definitely a concern...but I'm assuming for now it's some kind of automated bureaucracy issue, rather than us being targeted in some way. Maybe their process really has identified a bug we need to fix, but we need more info than "something went wrong."

Attempting to send another appeal. Last time we appealed, Google just sent back the identical "something went wrong" error report without any more info. They do at least specify the issue is with Android Auto, but we're not seeing a crash or failed behavior in our tests.

NOTE: in order for Seasons to work properly in Podverse, our servers will need to re-parse the RSS feed. This is because our parsers previously were not saving the data needed to display Seasons, but now they should be going forward.
If there is a podcast that you know has seasons, but Podverse doesn't display them, please let us know and we'll reparse it.

It does sound like lack of consistent internet connection could be related to the issue...No Agenda has some of the biggest episode files since shows can be 3 hours long. If possible my recommendation (if you haven't already) would be to try to download shows while you're connected to WiFi, and leave the app open until they finish downloading.
In the mobile app you can go to My Library (bottom tab) then Active Downloads to view download progress

While I've done quite a bit to try to speed up the UI, there is probably more work that could be done in that respect.
Are there any podcasts in particular you've noticed where the UI slows down? If an episode has P2.0 Chapters for example, or you have V4V set up, then there is extra logic running on progress.

Do you have a Podverse Premium membership?
If yes, my guess would be the delay you are seeing is primarily from the network request to sync your queue state with our server. An app like AntennaPod doesn't have a server to be synced with, so those local-only interactions would always be faster.
If no though, and it's still slow, then that's probably another issue we should create in Github.

If yes, can you tell me which episode and app you tested with? If it's reproducible, we could create a Github issue for it.

I'm not sure what could explain this...my understanding is there is nothing out of the ordinary about how our network requests are handled. One thing that could definitely be true though is that the *UI* updates slower. I think it's set to once per 3 seconds to indicate progress, but the download itself shouldn't be significantly slower. Also the podcasters host and serve the content, so I would think they are ultimately in control of download speeds.

@npub1xsl…ku66 thanks for your feedback. I spent most of the first 6 months of this year dedicated to Android fixes and improvements, so I'm glad it's at least noticeably better.
Are there any specific interactions that are running slow for you? Like is it slow when playing a downloaded episode, or when navigating from screen-to-screen?
Also, is the startup time part of the problem for you? We arbitrarily make the app wait 5 seconds on launch to give it time to handle some load and sync operations.

@npub1jtm…rxtn @npub1yqw…wajx @npub1dft…ta3d and we obviously can't make another HEAD request for the "retrieve from storage" operation, since retrieving from storage is meant to work offline.
It's definitely solvable somehow, although I'm not looking forward to possibly having to add a whole new key/value mapping in storage in order to account for what appears to be the first edge case we've seen like this in chapter images. I'm talking to Creon tonight to see if he has better ideas...

it's a good call, and I started down that road...but this looks like we're going to have to introduce another layer of storage and data mapping to be able to handle...
we can *request from server and save* the image no problem with a HEAD request...but then to get the chapter image out of our local storage/cache, we only have the original chapter image URL to work with, and at that point we don't know the extension again, so we don't know the file path in storage...

one thing I could try is to force coerce the images into a default image type if we can't parse an image extension out of the URL. For example, use the .jpg file type extension for all images we save in our cache that we can't detect from the URL. I'm not sure that will work though but it could be a simple change.

I see what's going on. The image URL's in James's chapters file are using an encoded URL parameter format that our "local image caching" handler can't handle. PV is assuming the image URLs end with a file extension (.jpg, .png, etc.) but these do not. We need to assign a file extension before saving images to our cache.
I actually don't even know how we can reliably parse out what the image file type is for URLs like this. Anyone have ideas?

Podverse only supports valueTimeSplits in the mobile app. Adding them to the website will require deeper pre-requisite V4V updates that will probably take a full month of work for me, so I don't have near-term expectations to get to it. If our open source community grows, hopefully we can add valueTimeSplits to web sooner.

@npub1l46…yyma there is a bug somewhere in our parser or sync database with PI operation that is preventing feeds from updating automatically *unless* there is a new episode. Updates to the feed that don’t contain a new episode aren’t triggering automatic parsing. It’s a real nuisance but I haven’t found the root cause yet.
