MT [So I will basically categorically never get a P+ account for many reasons, not just current events. I can live with never seeing any of the P+ #StarTrek material. But I’m still curious about how certain things play out. So spoilers, please!]
One interesting note that gets a bit washed out in what I see of the business with #Trelane in #StarTrekSNW is the depth of T’s immaturity in, “The Squire of Gothos,” not just emotionally but also intellectually. In particular, he’s observing Earth from a distance of hundreds of light years, but he hasn’t accounted for the time required for the signal to travel. Hence his antiquated appearance & manner. He’s been observing Earth around the turn of the 19th cy. (He mentions Napoleon, so it can’t be much earlier.) There’s even a bit of social commentary in the way he addresses each crew member in a different language based on their surname & addresses Sulu as, “Honorable Sir,” to which S remarks, “Are you kidding me?” T is deliberately portrayed as being out of touch with the ethos of the times (20th & 23rd centuries). The episode mocks habits which would not have been unusual a couple of generations earlier. It’s interesting that he appears similarly attired in SNW, which could mean different things, including not much at all. (By contrast, eg Q sometimes appears in Starfleet uniform or other contemporary attire that isn’t so conspicuous.)
It’s also not clear to me if he’s supposed to be, essentially, older, later in his own existence, even though the SNW appearance has to predate TSoG. But of course that would mean that in SNW he’s met Spock before. Or perhaps it’s the other way around & they’ve already met in TSoG.

So by popular demand, more or less, in the last #HangTrek puzzle I did 2 important things:
- No allstartrek mention of the guppe bot or AllStarTrek tag. This keeps the puzzles out of the watch parties.
- Only use the StarTrek tag on the 1st poll & then just hang subsequent polls as replies in a thread off the 1st. This keeps the noise down on that general tag, but still advertises the puzzles when new ones start, so new players can more easily find HangTrek.
I think those are the main mechanical improvements. I also reduced the footprint of the polls by avoiding lots of boilerplate noise.
HangTrek is sort of a lawless wasteland with no rules, as it should be. (lol) I think it’s sort of like poker night, where the dealer changes after each hand & it’s dealer’s choice. A lot of what happens is up to the host.
It’s up to the host how they want to do most things. But I’d suggest at least the 2 mechanical steps above for anyone hosting HangTrek.
This came up specifically in regard of HangTrek. There, the allstartrek guppe bot started life when a watch party migrated from Twitter. I basically horned in on their bot at one point & some others followed suit.
Regarding #SarlaccPit, I’ll probably start doing something similar there, but there’s been no specific complaint. The starwars guppe bot is pretty general purpose & appropriate as far as I’m concerned (not dedicated to a specific purpose like a watch party). The only problem might be that it will always boost reply posts. If you want to keep the noise down on the main StarWars tag by omitting it from replies, mentioning the bot defeats that.

Funny to recall in the 1st season O’Brien telling Sisko he should find a different friend for Jake. Who then teaches Nog to read. Nog joins Starfleet (& then as an officer outranks O’Brien). Nog faces down Martok. The amputation & recovery. Definitely compelling character development throughout the series.

I updated a #SarlaccPit rules toot to spell out something I think may be looming.
"If all blanks are filled in by polls before there is a correct guess, the host wins."
If the host gets to where the puzzle has been revealed by polls without a guess, so that another poll is not possible, the puzzle is over. The answer is revealed. There is no winner. Basically the same as 10 wrong guesses.
It seems unlikely that it would happen, but I think people are reluctant to guess because they don't want to run the puzzle. Maybe this doesn't happen with #HangTrek because the crowd is more engaged or something.
I think we need a scoreboard or something. Winning is only ever punished. There ought to be a little more at stake so that the puzzles don't end up running for weeks in dead silence.
