#WordWeavers 25. Do illicit drugs or alcohol play a role in your story?
In book 2, Anaïs smokes weed and experiments with psychedelic mushrooms. This causes some friction between her and Leila, whose sister is addicted to Ecstasy and other party drugs. Anaïs insists it's not the same, but Leila isn't convinced.
As for alcohol, in book 1 we learn that Anaïs' dad doesn't drink... or at least he didn't. There's some partying in book 2, but most characters drink no more or less than you'd expect.

#WordWeavers 17. By the end of your story, how many injuries has your MC had?
In book 1, Anaïs is critically injured and spends several weeks in the hospital followed by months of difficult recovery. But "other than that", no injuries I can think of. Nadia has a minor concussion and self-harms (won't go into detail).
In book 2, Anaïs is pecked by a flock of evil birds, and probably gets a lot of other scrapes and scratches, but nothing serious. Nadia suffers no (physical) injuries.

#ScribesAndMakers 17. Answer to yesterday's poll.
Damn, you guessed it. There are no cursed necklaces, wolf or otherwise, in my books. Not yet, at least.
The other three objects all appear in book 1: her grandparents give Anaïs a furry plush yeti while she's in the hospital, Anaïs and her friends buy an obsidian mirror at a flea market to use in a scrying ritual (or at least the seller claims it's obsidian, it might just be glass), and the doll made of human hair... well, that's a spoiler.

#WordWeavers 16. If your MC was elected mayor of your own town, would you stay or move? Why?
I have no idea how a French teenager would become mayor of a Danish town, but I'm sure she'd do a great job. I'd vote for Anaïs or Nadia.
Frankly, I have no idea who is mayor of my town now. It has never concerned me much. I'd prefer someone from a different political party than the one who won the last election, but the parties I vote for never win anyway.

#ScribesAndMakers 16. Create a poll listing 2-3 objects that have featured in your work and one that hasn't.
Which object has NOT featured in my stories?

Can anyone explain the Intel x64 REX prefix like I'm 5 years old, please? I was reading the manual for the MUL instruction, where it says:
> In 64-bit mode, the instruction’s default operation size is 32 bits. [...] Use of the REX.W prefix promotes operation to 64 bits.
Okay, I though, so I just write "rex.w mul rdi" right? Apparently NASM says nope! What about "mul rex.w rdi"? Also nope! So what is the actual syntax for this supposed prefix?

I suppose the key is the "at first" part, but that wasn't clear (to me) from the original question. I can think of objects whose significance only becomes clear after a while, but I didn't feel like that was what the question was asking.
Anyway, confusion resolved 🙂

Hmm. I just feel like, either we hear about those object in the story, in which case they're not "seemingly insignificant", or we don't hear about them... in which case we can't judge their significance because we don't know about them.
I suppose a character could have an object which is mentioned, but its significance isn't mentioned. Like, "She wore a necklace in the shape of a crescent moon. Anyway, moving on...". But then we're in "secret author knowledge" territory, no?

2026-09-07 07:19:14 UTC

I see. I honestly still struggle to think of an example of such an object, though.

2026-09-04 11:55:47 UTC

#WordWeavers 4. What seemingly insignificant object in your story carries a lot of emotional weight?
How can something be seemingly insignificant if it carries a lot of emotional weight? If an object in my story carries a lot of emotional weight, then its significance is going to be pretty obvious, I should think. Or at least, I should hope. Otherwise I feel like I've failed my job as a writer.

2026-09-02 09:39:26 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 2. How do you think where you live affects your creative work?
I've lived all my life in Denmark, and I'm sad to say but Denmark and Danish culture is very creatively uninspiring.
My books are set in France. Living in Denmark makes it hard for me to really absorb the culture and life that I'm trying to portray, because I mostly experience it at a distance. I really wish I could spend a few years living in France, but I'll likely have to make do with the occasional trip.

#ScribesAndMakers 29. At age 11, our TTMD guest answered 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' with 'Author.' Do you know what you wanted to be at 11?
I remember two major dreams I had as a kid: marine biologist and writer. I think by age 11, I'd probably stopped talking about fish all the time, and was telling stories about werewolves and young detectives who solved mysteries instead.

2026-08-29 07:54:54 UTC

#WordWeavers 29. What writing accomplishment are you quietly proud of?
I'm not quietly proud, I'm HELL YES! yelling-from-the-top-of-a-mountain proud that book 2 is nearly done* and that I'm soon about to start drafting book 3.
* For a certain value of done. Like book 1, it still needs work, but it has reached a stage where it feels like a real, proper story and where I'm happy to put it aside while I move on to book 3.

2026-08-28 15:26:19 UTC

#WordWeavers 28. What's one question you're still trying to answer about your story?
Always and forever "what is it I'm trying to say?" Even when I think I know, again and again it turns out I didn't. Not really.

2026-08-27 10:50:26 UTC

#WordWeavers 27. Which character would win a trivia contest?
Depends on the topics, but I think Nadia has the best chance in a generic contest, simply because she follows the news and has the broadest knowledge of pop culture, sports, and what goes on in the world. Other characters may get better grades in school, but their interests are more specialized. For example, Mélissa might win a trivia contest if questions were limited to science.

#WritersCoffeeClub 8. What's the last thing you read which motivated you to write?
The book I'm currently reading: tome 3 of the early diary of Anaïs Nin (1923-27). This is the point where she starts trying to write novels and plays herself, and it's both relatable, inspiring, and humbling at the same time. Relatable because of her doubts about her own writing, and inspiring/humbling because she wrote so much or so well.

YES! I finally did it. I don’t even know how many times I’ve tried and failed to make vegan macarons, but this time… not a single one ruined! (I did make a terrible mess on the kitchen table though 😅)
I’m not 100% sure what went wrong all those other times, but I *think* it was because I put them in a pre-heated oven instead of a cold oven. So that’s my tip: don’t put macarons in a pre-heated oven.
I’m so happy 🥳

As an autistic kid I often felt (or the idea was put in my head) like I was an alien from another planet. As an adult I increasingly feel like I'm actually one of the few humans stranded on a planet full of alien monsters.
I just heard a Danish politician proudly declare that he doesn't see any problem with sending Iranian refugees back to Iran during a fucking war & I just don't understand how these people can look themselves in the mirror. How don't they flee in horror from their own image?

Stumbled upon two new vegan products from the Danish brand Naturli': smoked salmon and shrimp. The shrimp are a bit chewier than I remember shrimp being, but otherwise both are pretty great!
It’s a shame a lot of these products don’t seem to sell very well around here. People should give them a chance.

On NixOS is there any way to
1. Figure out which version of a package is currently being used.
2. Configure the system to ignore any updates to that package and use that version going forward.
I'm thinking specifically of the AMD graphics driver, a recent update of which is apparently causing issues for me. I'd like to roll that back to the previous version, and only that.

#WordWeavers 3 Dec: What's the best thing about the world of your story?
That it's not real (even though my story is set in "our world").
I love fantasy — dragons, werewolves, magic, ghosts, gods, etc — and I love it exactly because none of it is real. I think that's what makes it so wonderful, and it's why I find religion and superstition so depressing, because it doesn't just diminish the wonders and beauty of the real world, it also diminishes the fantasy by making it something ... common.

Alas, notice the careful wording: "Tomorrow we will dispatch a naval vessel from Cartagena with all necessary resources in case it was necessary to assist the flotilla and carry out a rescue operation."
They foresee that Israel will sink the flotilla and that the people on board will need rescuing. It doesn't sound like they're actually going to defend the flotilla.

All these people falling over themselves to praise Charlie Kirk worry me way more than whoever killed him. It's not a great sign when we can't condemn a man like Kirk.
If we want political violence to end, we *must* be able to condemn people like Charlie Kirk long before it comes to violence. People who are openly proud of their lack of empathy and who work hard to spread hatred of others belong in psychiatric care or prison, not at the head of political organizations.

Currently reading the diary of Anne Frank, and from the first pages it's hard not to fall in love with her sassy attitude and personality. Knowing that she doesn't survive, and reading what she had to live through is truly heart-wrenching and tragic.
And then you think of all the Palestinian Annes who we'll probably never hear about, because unlike Nazi Germany no one is doing anything to stop Israel from turning Gaza to ashes.

I set services.printing.enable = true and now it can *find* the printer, but it says it can't find a driver.
A search suggested this:
services.avahi = {
enable=true;
nssmdns=true;
openFirewall=true;
};
but if I understand correctly that's only for networked printers, and I do not want to connect my printer to a network.
I'm used to plugging things in with USB and having them just work, which they usually do on other distros, but apparently not NixOS.

I first tried with AirPrint because that seemed the simplest, but it turns out the printer needs to be connected to WiFi for that and I DO NOT WANT my printer connected to the internet. I mistakenly thought AirPrint surely worked via Bluetooth, but alas no.
So then I connected it with USB to my PC, but NixOS can't seem to find a driver for it. Anyone able to help?

This poem, written for her by Haidar al-Ghazali, deserves to be shared and read:
"Speaking of her arrival into a kinder afterlife, it read: 'Today's sun won't bring harm. The plants in the pots will arrange themselves for a gentle visitor. It will be bright enough to help mothers to dry their laundry quickly, and cool enough for the children to play all day. Today's sun will not be harsh on anyone.' "

My concern was that if Mastodon was its own server I'd have to run two servers in parallel, but since that's not the case, the question is a bit moot.
I'm so used to Apache+PHP+MySQL that in my little world nothing else exists 🤣 Although I do currently deploy to MariaDB, but since they're 99% compatible I've never had to bother enough with the differences to switch to MariaDB locally.

I see that the default/suggested setup for Mastodon involves Nginx ... for some reason I had convinced myself that Mastodon was its own server. I guess that means there's no particular reason I couldn't just run Mastodon on Apache instead.

2024-08-10 03:40:11 UTC

Say I wanted to host a handful of small personal websites and a small personal Mastodon instance, could I do so on a single server?
That is, this one server would have to run (at a minimum) Apache, PHP, MySQL, and whatever Mastodon needs.
Is it possible? Is it advisable? Or is this a terrible, awful, no-good idea? #LazyWeb
