I just realized I've never seen a single movie showing the rise of Nazism from the perspective of ordinary German citizens.
There must be some out there, but all I've ever seen is triumphalist American films about World War II (when the Nazis were already in power). The closest thing I can think of is an old 80s TV miniseries called The Man Who Lived at the Ritz. It shows an American living abroad in Paris (a painter), and his experience with Nazism taking hold and also the French resistance.

Some areas have been hit harder than others I suspect. I feel very fortunate here in Portland that we have a robust local shops culture… not to say that nobody's struggling because certainly some places have closed over the years, but generally I can shop locally for most of anything I need.

I've just never understood the appeal of Sydney Sweeney.
The first I ever saw her was in The White Lotus as a bratty blonde teenager. And she was fine in that. Not terribly memorable, but fine.
Then I started to get the impression that's always her thing. Bratty, on the edge of slutty, etc. Which is OK in that plenty of actors fill roles they already seem good at—certainly true of character actors.

The cult classic TV show Max Headroom predicted a future where a sort of media-centric corporate oligarchy would essentially be the government, with all of the wild inequality and horrific abuse of civil rights you might expect.

I sometimes feel bad it’s been over two months and I haven’t traveled farther to more “spectacular” inland wilderness areas. I’ve largely spent a heckuvalotta time just in coastal areas of #Oregon and Northern #California.
But why not? I sincerely believe this is some of the most beautiful country you’ll find anywhere. And town-hopping—checking out the local food scenes, libraries, stores, galleries, markets, etc.—is one of the most fun things to do ever.

OK, I finished it (it was a slog in certain parts due to the legalese and citations I don't understand), and based on the juicy narrative details, I can honestly say I don't even recognize the company being portrayed.

I'm reading through Judge Gonzalez' order against Apple's unlawful App Store policies right now, and oh boy do I have a big smile on my face. 😃
(For context, I'm a huge fan of Apple products. Simultaneously, I have an extreme dislike for the locked-down nature of the iPad, and by extension iPhone. I believe every power user should be able to say "Yes, make this work like a real computer please" and then install—and pay for if necessary—any relevant code anyone has ever provided.)

Either that, or your requirements were largely generic, possibly served just as well by low-code/no-code solutions or even database + forms platforms (Airtable, etc.).
The person also claims they were quoted $130K for humans to develop it instead. There is *no way* a legitimate $130K project (I question that estimate, certainly) was extruded out by some person with a prompt.

I am completely sold on using #TapestryApp by @npub1wha…fj2r primarily as my window into Bluesky.
As I keep saying, I'm not really "on" Bluesky. For me, it's sort of like a text version of YouTube. I use it to follow current events and certain political topics. That's pretty much it. As such, using a reader app like Tapestry makes great sense. I keep it in the Collapsed view so I can quickly scroll through Bluesky "headlines" and expand anything which catches my attention. 👓

I still miss my iPhone 5.

I get the anger at Joe Biden and what the U.S. was doing among this community, I really do.
But I don't understand how Kamala Harris was seen as the distasteful choice compared to…Donald Trump? As if Trump would be a friend to Palestinians, ever? **There has never been any world in which that is even a remote possibility.**

The only remaining institution I personally have some measure of trust in is the State of Oregon. I have no idea what they're able to do or what they're willing to do, but that's where we're at.

Do the Supreme Court and Congress have any actual game plan to stop an Executive Branch that's gone completely rogue?
Are they prepared to do whatever's necessary to stop what appears to be a systematic dismantling and raiding of the federal government?
I fear the answer to both questions is no, which is why ultimately the real danger to America isn't the Trump administration it's that all the guardrails are gone.

I am certain you've won the award for being the longest reply I've ever received! 😲
And a thoroughly enjoyable read it was. On the whole I can't say I disagree with it, although some of the historical details are outside of my wheelhouse.
I do think forges *could* do more to aid in the administration of governance models. And even now, there are differences. For example, Gitea/Forgejo have a branch protection option that disallows modifying certain key files, while GH does not.

People will say that technology can't solve social issues and programmers often err in thinking they can. And I understand that.
At the same time, as we’ve *clearly* seen in the stark differences between commercial social media and indie-run fediverse, sometimes the way software technology is designed, built, and deployed has a *huge* impact on the kinds of social structures, norms, and expectations which are in vogue.
Put another way: if GitHub is the “Facebook” of forges…what's the Mastodon?

Another point:
It's great that it's so easy to fork a project on GitHub and experiment with some improvements or fixes that may or may not be upstreamed at some point.
But that's not a governance model. 😅
If a well-established, oft-used project's policy around significant community disagreements is “Well you're welcome to fork it. Goodbye.”
That's generally treated as a social issue alone, not one which might actually be preventable *using* forge-based technology.

Quick unformed #OpenSource #programming thoughts:
We're so used to “how GitHub works” that perhaps we lack the imagination that there could be other ways to organize, manage, and perform operations on Git repositories.
More specifically, perhaps the reason so many projects are run de facto using a “BDFL / core team” model is because that's just very easy to do on GitHub. Other models are perhaps more difficult—aka you gain no benefits from any tooling provided by GitHub itself.

I definitely don't agree with that. Replace "LLM" in that sentence with "AR-15", or "racemic methamphetamine", and you get a sense of how I find the sentiment a little nonsensical.
I'm glad Simon welcomes criticism of this technology space, but on the scope of it, we are not aligned.

I really am overdue in writing up a @npub1a2r…6tz3 article about why Tailwind is actually pretty good now that v4 is out the door. Folks will no doubt be shocked that I, Jared—who was once a long-time critic of Tailwind and proud to have been blocked on birdsite by Adam Wathan—am giving Tailwind a thumbs up.
Not saying it's perfect…not even saying you should out of your way to use it…but it's an *order of magnitude* better than it once was. And this is Very Good News for the #WebDev community.

Any good reporters out there collecting real-world data on how many people currently distraught over the #TikTok ban actually know that it's Trump's fault we're in this mess in the first place?
Because I swear to god, if people end up praising Trump and thanking him for ending the "Biden" ban of TikTok, I'm going to blow a gasket.
(Sadly, I expect this is *exactly* what will end up happening.)

I was chatting a bit with an older lady who was at the #Portland #PeoplesMarch, and she asked me about my tag (which is just my business card 😊), and I mentioned I'm covering the event and getting the word out on #Mastodon.
She said "now I know about 'mastodon' as a big hairy beast…what do you mean by it?"
I said "oh, it's one of the newer social networks"
She was very excited to hear that news, and went over to go tell her friends all about it. 😄

Yes, this is hill I will die on:
Picking a Mastodon instance is a feature, not a bug.
Acting like consumers don't like making choices is incredibly weird!
*People will go out of their way* to request items that aren't even on posted menus at In-N-Out or Starbucks, ffs!
People *love* to make choices, love to customize things, love to express themselves, love to stand out and be different.
"OMG I don't know which one to pick BLARGH” is a meme folks will repeat devoid of useful information.

Furthermore, I think recreating Twitter is a BAD THING. If there's anything I've learned from my time on Threads, it's that I appreciate something more akin to "old Instagram" quite frankly— a platform I did enjoy an awful lot until Meta enshittified it. Threads is likely destined for the same fate, but meanwhile… 🤷🏻‍♂️
The Fediverse is a *reset*, a chance to use the Web as it was always intended. Allowing anyone to publish and communicate equitably on their OWN TERMS, unbeholden to motherships.

Ha, that's one way to force yourself into a better habit. 😅
My Nikon Zfc is pretty compact, so I really just need to bundle it in my mind with my other backpack gear (iPad, keyboard, charger, etc.) so it's almost always with me. Motivated now to do just that!

I'm starting to put together a photography portfolio in earnest, and I can tell you right now how many shots over the years I wish I'd taken with a proper camera & lens rather than with just my iPhone.
Even now, the only "pro" photos I believe I can take in good faith on the iPhone is with @npub198r…unah. Apple's standard computational processing is just too compromised—at least on the 14 Pro.
I wonder if the 16 Pro tomorrow will move the needle again?
