This was an amazing read. I had already been thinking about the "back to IRL" trend and how it would be harder for people who live in a more isolated manner, but I was thinking more in terms of lark of proximity to urban amenities (aka those who live very rural).
This helped me think about the topic along a different axis. Thank you for sharing and enlightening me.

I don't know about y'all, but I think it should be *illegal* to generate slop imagery of other people without their consent.

People have been sharing that "Programming Still Sucks" article, and while I appreciate that it's well written and funny and makes some good points, overall I don't care for it.
Because it perpetuates the myth that *software development only happens* within corporate capitalist settings. And it's simply not true, nor should it be true.
Programmers can come from all walks of life, and express themselves *joyfully* through the art of software in many local/small biz or non-capitalist settings.

If AI were actually intelligent, there would be no need to learn "AI literacy" because you would just intuitively interact with the AI.
Did anyone need to learn "Lt. Cmdr. Data"? Or even the buttoned-up Enterprise Computer? lol, no, you just talk to them and they do actually useful things.

There's no feeling like the productivity* which comes from *having* to be productive. 😌
I've begun to hate "feeling inspired” and then working on a project, because such bursts of passion are rare and fleeting and hard to rely on.
I'd much rather drag my ass into a planning session for a project because *I'm a goddamn professional* and get creative work done *because I have to*. I can't afford the luxury of writer's block.
* Note: this isn't about hustle culture, but rather habitual routine.

I was partway through watching Outcome, the new Apple TV film starring Keanu Reeves, when I thought: "People are either going to love this or HATE it."
Sure enough when I opened up Rotten Tomatoes, the outcome is not looking good.
Me? *I loved it.* It feels original, idiosyncratic, bold, ironic. It's not afraid to alienate some folks. It's not watered down. Keanu is really acting. Jonah Hill is absolutely insane. 😂 The supporting cast is on fire. The themes are deep, raw.

There's just something about the MacBook Neo which feels like a newer era of Apple hardware design than many of their previous laptops. Which is bananas because it's their "cheap" product!
It almost feels like the iPad strategy from the early 2010s but for the Mac. Iterate on a pretty great but "low-end" device until you finally get to a really pro device…*rather than* figure out how to scale down a pro device to something cheap.

I'm starting to wonder if I should buy some used computer gear as “backup" devices in case we end up a year or two from now with even the used market prices having skyrocketed.
Looks like the entire computer industry supply chain is starting to unravel, and unlike in 2020 this is all due to the industry repeatedly punching itself in the face. Are we having fun yet??!!

So now I'm hearing about so-called Open Source projects closing PR contributions from the outside world because it's easier to "generate the code" from within their org just based on people's bug reports or whatever.

These people never cared about #OpenSource or #LibreSoftware. They just cared about marketing & free labor. Now that they can get "free labor" from slop machines faster, they'll do that.

More on the synaesthesia: I will actually judge melodies based on the shapes they make in my head.
I don't like melodies with a lot of repetition on a few notes, because the shapes they make are very dull. I like melodies that go way up and down at interesting intervals and form geometric patterns that seem cool.
This is probably why I don't like a whole lot of pop music. For instance, She Will Be Loved. It's performed nicely, but the melody is very "flat". Snooze! 😴

Lots to love about #Codeberg right now.
#Zig moved to it. LibreWolf is using it. Many #Fediverse projects use it including the FEP process. #Fedora set up their own Forgejo instance (the underlying software for Codeberg).
Now #Gentoo is switching from GitHub to Codeberg!
I've migrated most of my projects there as well.
Every one of these stories is a win for #OpenSource and a middle finger to #Microslop, which is a win-win all around. 😊

The IceCubesApp client for Mastodon went from its past controversy of including API connections to OpenAI without proper warning (I stopped using it in 2023 for that reason), to now they're just yeeting "vibe coded" features into the code base via Codex.
Again, I cannot recommend anyone use it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I'm often a voice of doom on this stuff, but I found Enzor-DeMeo's messaging a bit more reflective and sensible than I might have expected. I can continue to be disappointed on the AI-related front, but if he's aware of the legitimate backlash and taking steps to ensure all of that stuff is easily switched off and doesn't damage the rest of their UX and value prop, maybe it's a (small) win.

I just realized I've never seen a single movie showing the rise of Nazism from the perspective of ordinary German citizens.
There must be some out there, but all I've ever seen is triumphalist American films about World War II (when the Nazis were already in power). The closest thing I can think of is an old 80s TV miniseries called The Man Who Lived at the Ritz. It shows an American living abroad in Paris (a painter), and his experience with Nazism taking hold and also the French resistance.

I've just never understood the appeal of Sydney Sweeney.
The first I ever saw her was in The White Lotus as a bratty blonde teenager. And she was fine in that. Not terribly memorable, but fine.
Then I started to get the impression that's always her thing. Bratty, on the edge of slutty, etc. Which is OK in that plenty of actors fill roles they already seem good at—certainly true of character actors.
But I simply don't know if there's anything beyond that! And now with that *awful* jeans ad… 🤷🏻‍♂️

🎞️ I really wanted to make sure I got a chance to see “Ballerina” before it left the theaters, and I’m glad I did.
I’d heard mixed early reactions to the film, so I wasn’t sure if I’d really enjoy it. In particular, some folks thought the first act of the film was slow and there was too much setup.
I have no idea what they’re talking about!
I *needed a reason* to care about Eve Macarro (played to perfection by Ana de Armas), and this film gave it to me in spades.

First of all, it didn't provide you with a "right" answer.
Second of all, it also didn't provide you with an "answer"!

The cult classic TV show Max Headroom predicted a future where a sort of media-centric corporate oligarchy would essentially be the government, with all of the wild inequality and horrific abuse of civil rights you might expect.
More recently, the Canadian sci-fi show Continuum envisioned a future where a high-tech "Corporate Congress" ran everything with the "City Protective Services" acting as their fascist enforcers.

I sometimes feel bad it’s been over two months and I haven’t traveled farther to more “spectacular” inland wilderness areas. I’ve largely spent a heckuvalotta time just in coastal areas of #Oregon and Northern #California.

OK, I finished it (it was a slog in certain parts due to the legalese and citations I don't understand), and based on the juicy narrative details, I can honestly say I don't even recognize the company being portrayed.
I have been saying in a provocative way how the Apple of the 2020s has become no better than the Microsoft of the 1990s…but even so, I was unprepared to process through the depths of pathological behavior on display here. 😩

I'm reading through Judge Gonzalez' order against Apple's unlawful App Store policies right now, and oh boy do I have a big smile on my face. 😃
(For context, I'm a huge fan of Apple products. Simultaneously, I have an extreme dislike for the locked-down nature of the iPad, and by extension iPhone. I believe every power user should be able to say "Yes, make this work like a real computer please" and then install—and pay for if necessary—any relevant code anyone has ever provided.)

Uh, this is a HUGE strategy shift for Adobe.
They were making a big deal about how their own generative AI tools, mainly used for adding/removing content within images as a shortcut to traditional Photoshop manipulation, were more ethical than the competition because they trained on the corpus of imagery they own (Adobe Stock, etc.)
But now with direct OpenAI integration, that means…absolutely diddly-squat! This is why you must never trust the "ethics" of Big Tech. 🤨

Either that, or your requirements were largely generic, possibly served just as well by low-code/no-code solutions or even database + forms platforms (Airtable, etc.).
The person also claims they were quoted $130K for humans to develop it instead. There is *no way* a legitimate $130K project (I question that estimate, certainly) was extruded out by some person with a prompt.
But hey, that's the world we live in now. Non-experts thinking their lack of expertise is a virtue.
