Instacart is acting up too. They've tried to change tips to 1% more (15 to 16% for example) and also turned off SMS notifications. So now I'm having to calculate tip manually because fuck them. And I had to figure out where the notification settings were so I could turn SMS back on.
I don't use the app. I hate phone apps. I only use IC on desktop and I need the SMS notification to know when the shopper needs approval for something.
Web designers don't seem to understand how their sites are actually used in the real world and just do shit willy nilly. I'm so tired of having to mop up behind their digital spills. Fuck sake.

I know it's common advice for people to give out a fake number if they don't want to give their actual one but the fact of the matter is that you don't know whose life you're going to fuck with if you do that. There are so many ways that can go wrong.
In my life currently, for example, someone has given my number out for some sort of mortgage purposes so now I'm signed up for a realty/mortgage scam that has been coming in a couple of times a day for the past week. The area code and first three are the same number but the last four are always different. My spam protection blocks the calls but then they go to voicemail and I get the notification sound, usually when I'm trying to sleep. I have yet to find a way to block spam calls from leaving voicemails on my current phone setup.
If you must give out a fake number, memorize your local PD's non emergency number and give that. Or your local FBI office. Somewhere that deserves to get spam calls, and not some random person you don't know.
Don't mind me, this is my daily "shaking fist at clouds and yelling about my lawn" moment.

Damn, I finished Everspace 2 and tried to start The Invincible (based on Stanislas Lem) but I didn't catch that it was first person so I had to delete it immediately after I started the game.
I can't play first person titles due to the extreme nausea they cause me.
I wish devs would make third person an option in every game. It's rather ableist that they don't do that, tbh.

I just got back from a routine doctor's appointment. they asked me three separate times, once at reception, once by the nurse, and then again by the doctor when I saw her, if they could use an AI note taking app.
I flatly refused all three times. No. Never. I don't want an AI around me or listening to me or even existing in my vicinity. I'm sorry if that makes your job a little harder, but fuck that clanker shit.
Everyone was fine with it. The nurse even agreed with me.

We just received a form for my youngest's SSA appeal that was due on July 19. Our mail is super unreliable now so we only just got it. Plus it was postmarked July 15 so they didn't give us much time at all.
I think this is on purpose. I've emailed his attorney to ask what to do but come on, we need that approval and they're doing everything they can to make us just go away.

The East coast is getting a taste of what it's like in California on a yearly basis. The heat, the wildfire smoke and poor air quality.
In other words, you don't need to move here anymore for that authentic California experience.

Budgies in the wild are seed eaters, and love grass seed in their natural diet. My eldest gets timothy hay for his chinchilla and I give Praxis some of it from time to time. It really enriches him and he enjoys it so much.
I think other budgies in peoples' homes would benefit from the enrichment likewise.

We are literally at the point where we either dismantle and destroy the industrial civilization we are trapped in or it will destruct on its own.
The former means we may be able to salvage some of the other life on the planet. The latter means everything goes, including us, because there will be nothing left to sustain us.
People don't want to end civ because it offers so many comforts and addictions but those comforts and addictions are bought at the price of billions of non-human and human lives.
So it's either some of us or none of us. A living planet or a dead one.
I know which I hope for and I know the one I sadly think is actually going to happen.
Doom rides down upon us and all people think about is electricity and clankers. Social media and lattes. Fantasy football and television.
It really is coming down to total annihiilation of all life above bacterial stage.

#HumanSupremacy is so ubiquitous it's not even really noticed by most people. Right down to the language.
Try referring to groups of animals as people -- i.e., the crow people that come to hang out on the wires in front of my house before going to their roost for the night.
Refer to animals as "who" rather than "that." Example, "the crow who was sitting on my car this morning." Or, "the tree who lives in my garden."
Just doing little things like that can start to shift the way we see our non-human relations.

My take on this whole brouhaha about the fediverse is as follows:
People can come here and post what they want. But I can block them or their instance if I don't want to hear from them. And that includes hucksters shilling AI garbage and crying about engagement. We don't owe you attention, sir. Go chat with your bots and leave the rest of us alone.
But actual bigots: racists, TERFs, homophobes, red-pill shills and the like should be run out at the point of digital pitchforks. It should be made so uncomfortable for them here, that they flee.

A pox on ID.me for making my youngest and I run in circles for 3 hours because the process to verify identity is badly designed, returns too many errors, and is just fucking awful in general.
We're currently waiting in an hour long queue (down to 33 minutes after 45 actual minutes waiting) for a video call with someone.
All to try to enroll him in community college.
This is a prime example of how technology does not simplify or better our lives. Rather, it complicates and burdens us in ways that never existed before.

Afroman's verdict reminds me of D.J. T.O. (Antavio Johnson), who got convicted of threatening cops for a song he'd recorded: Kill Me A Cop. He did two years in prison.
Different state, different time, much younger man without a big following. His song is a banger and I've had it in my music database for a long time.

I pulled the plug on The Dead Zone series after an episode in which Johnny prevented an airplane crash. None of the stuff that happened in that episode had any grounding in reality and I just can't anymore.
So I started watching a miniseries version of The Shining that King wrote the screenplay for.
It's shallow and not scary at all. I went online to look up a few things and found out that King hated the Kubrick version. WTF? That's a masterpiece. It's so much better than this miniseries it's practically a different story.
My conclusion: King needs to stop writing screenplays. He is not a screen writer. He's a great author but he isn't able to translate his psychological horror to the big screen. Most people aren't. So much of his work takes place in peoples' heads that it takes a special director to even make a movie come close.

So, my saga concerning Hulu's inaccessible subtitles continues.
I had received a letter that they'd corrected the show I'd complained about. But then I tried to watch it yesterday and it's the same as it was; the closed captioning (speaking X language) obscures the embedded subtitles when the characters are speaking something other than English.
I'm not really surprised but I am fucking irritated. I'm probably going to cancel my Hulu subscription once I have the spoons to do so. I will, however, be replying to that email with "you're a fucking liar" but in business speak.

@nprofile…g67x I was lucky to even have a Medicare advantage health plan next year. They're mostly closing down due to the budget cuts. There was only one in my area so I'm stuck with it, and I'm very lucky that my main doc (a specialist I've seen for over 30 years) is still on the plan.
Dental insurance is always extra, and it can be really expensive to add on so a good many people don't do it and neglect their dental care instead.
The state of our healthcare system is abysmal and you're right, it seems impossible that it can get worse yet somehow it still does.
But what can one expect from a country that worships capitalism like a god? Only profit matters.

I'd been having trouble with fine detail for a while, had to stop crocheting because I couldn't visually separate the stitches. Now I know why. Hopefully I'll be able to get this looked at before my insurance switches to a new plan January 1. This US health care system is a labyrinthian nightmare. The cruelty is the point.

I just finished with the eye doctor. I thought my vision was deteriorating because of cataracts but they're still not ripe. It's macular degeneration due to old age and severe myopia. The doc told me I needed to go see the "retina people." Sounds like an eldritch race out of HG Wells.
My prescription is so much worse that I had to order new glasses. Luckily I get them online and they were just under $200 with tax and shipping. In a brick and mortar place they'd be over a thousand.
So I'm literally going blind but not bad enough to lose my driver's license yet apparently.
Speaking of driving, getting home after being dilated for the tests was hair-raising but I made it safely without hitting anybody or anything so that's something I guess. Good thing I know the way so I can practically autopilot it--I wouldn't have been able to read any street signs.

I've been watching the new series, Alien Earth, on Hulu and I really like it. But I can't help reflecting that our idea that aliens would be inimical and hostile is just a reflection of how we behave as colonizers. The xenomorph and the other alien life forms on the ship are simply reflections of our own ugliness as civilized humans.
My favorite alien creature is the eyeball octopus. It was trying to warn the science officer that other aliens were loose and then took over the engineer to try to fist fight the xenomorph. What a dude.
