I was walking and felt nothing lol I'm always bummed to miss the big ones! A woman sitting next to me said, "did you feel that earthquake?" I'm like?? No? 😅 No damage here, people in actual buildings and "real" houses got a lot more shaking and damage from falling things. My little shackteau and homestead showed zero damage or falling things.

the jungle makes quick work of something the size of a 150-250 lb wild pig. The rain, sun, microbes, bugs, mongoose, chickens, feral cats, dogs, heat and humidity, if in abundance and timed properly: takes 3 weeks. What's usually left is a greasy spot, some hair, some bones. Lots of people use bonechar and hair for soil inputs, so it can be useful. I get to see the life cycle pretty often out here on the homestead. It's not useless information. ☺️

I made chocolate for the first time. 😁
Ten years ago, I planted a seed that grew a tree that produced 3 pods that produced seeds that I fermented, dried, roasted, peeled, added sugar and ground into chocolate paste. It's delicious. The original tree where I sourced the seed that grew my tree was covered by lava in 2018.

I'm unliking and re-liking and I'm un-boosting and re-boosting this post bc it's just that 🎯 I'd love to hear your thoughts on how to forge thru these types of obstacles. I really really REALLY want everyone to have a safe place to be, and bonus: one that provides sustenance. I have so much to share, yet I still can't "do it all" myself. I genuinely want to find solutions for this, but I'm afraid I'm not good at solving this particular problem. 😭

I definitely think about the ablest nature of a subsistence farming homestead or any community that depends on manual labor to exist. Within a capitalist society, I don't know a good way to have inclusive communities that can fully nurture each individual persons needs, while not working the "able bodied/minded" members to death. Mutual aid communities exist(ed) but you have to deconstruct capitalism enough, and have high enough ratio of willing and "abled" people at any given time, to do the daily work of survival for the group. As much as I'd love to provide "refuge" for a bunch of people who might benefit greatly from the environment, I (on this one single homestead) need people who can physically and mentally handle this life. I'm not equipped AT ALL to take on 100%+ of the work load, even if I wish I could. I need help myself. 😅 I know I'm not always running at 100% and as my body starts to go, (it's done wonders for my mind) I don't see anyone stepping up to do this back breaking work. "Many hands make light work." But it also has to come from a place where there are enough "able" hands in the first place. When tech starts doing the manual labor that would create more egalitarian societies, instead of just making a few people rich, that's when we will see a fair and just society.

Building AI and huge data centers in the desert is WILDLY ignorant and misdirected behavior. It's almost as if the people who build and design these things don't even consider naturally cool or water rich places. They don't even try. I mean, if ya gonna build something that needs ALL THE WATER, then why not build it where water never stops? Nevermind. Don't you dare touch the rainforest and shorelines. How 'bout we just shut it down altogether?
Not being accountable to resources IS the downfall of humanity. I have never had a question or bout of loneliness so deep that I am willing to turn to chatgpt and away from the resources that we depend on for ACTUAL life: water, air, land.
The people who continue to push Capitalism as "the way" are actively going against what is best for people and planet. There is NO ethical consumption under #capitalism We MUST return to reciprocal, nurturing relationships with the land and each other, as indigenous cultures have for generations. #mutualaide #offgrid #generalstrike #conservation #permaculture #solarpunk #community

"When anthropology professor Alison Murray was studying prehistoric human remains at the University of Cambridge, she made a startling discovery about women’s bodies: They were buff. When comparing prehistoric women to modern ones, Murray found their bone structure most closely resembled that of today’s elite rowers—evidence of regular, load-bearing activity and a sign that women played a major role in the development of agriculture.
"In fact, for most of human history, women weren’t meant to be thin; they were meant to be strong. Neolithic women had arm bones 11 to 16% stronger than the rowers to 30% greater than typical Cambridge students, according to a 2017 study. Bronze Age women showed a similar pattern, with arm bones up to 13% stronger than rowers. Our cultural obsession with thinness is a relatively recent invention, born of fashion, patriarchy, and postwar consumerism. When food became more accessible, especially in Western cultures, thinness replaced fullness as a marker of status and self-discipline. It began in the late 19th century, with new warnings about 'corpulence,' the dawn of dieting as a moral virtue, and the invention and rise of the calorie, all of which paved the way for modern food restriction.
"Across time and cultures, women have consistently outlived men by 5 to 20%, says Steven Austad, scientific director of the American Federation for Aging Research. The global life expectancy at birth for a woman is 76 compared with 71 for a man. About three-fourths of centenarians are women.
"The reasons aren’t fully understood—theories include the possibility of a more responsive immune system, an additional X chromosome or the idea that mothering makes women robust—but the pattern is clear.
"And when it comes to strength, women possess a different kind of power. Yes, men typically have more upper-body muscle and larger hearts. But studies show women are often more resilient. Sandra Hunter, chair of movement science in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor has found that women can better withstand muscle fatigue. In fact, Hunter points to a 2016 review of more than 55 fatigue studies that concluded that, on average, women outlasted men by 36%.
"The emerging science paints a clearer picture: women are not the weaker sex. We’re just built differently—and to last.
"Bursts of the “return to skinny” have always surfaced at pivotal moments — right when women are on the brink of claiming more power. It’s no coincidence. The flapper look took hold in the 1920s just as women won the right to vote — a new, boyish silhouette for a new kind of woman, one who was suddenly politically powerful. In the 1960s, Twiggy’s thin, androgynous frame became the face of fashion right as the women’s liberation movement was gaining traction, challenging traditional roles and demanding equality. In the 1990s, heroin chic surged in popularity as women flooded law schools, boardrooms, and newsrooms in record numbers — a visual counterpunch to female ambition."
This photo points to the greater strength of women in present-day societies where they do heavy farm work, and grind or pound grain (or seeds, or yam, or other foods). Shown here, very ancient grindstones in the Sahara, from a time when plants grew in a greener Sahara.

ICE is randomly detaining people without any sort of plan or justification. It doesn't matter where you are from, or what your nationality is. Lastest WTF is detaining a Tahitian francophone, traveling to see family in Hawaii. Detained without family knowing anything, basically just disappeared. ICEs plan? Continue to detain until their return flight to Tahiti in 3 months. WTF? Tell me how this is useful? If you are working in these facilities, it's your duty to DO NOT COMPLY.
Anyway, the family finally found out where she is, but she's still just sitting there. #resist #revolt #revolution

It may look like a family soup recipe, but it's a good gardening recipe for PEST CONTROL. It's pest control. Aim for the eyes, nose and mouth of everyday GARDEN PESTS.
*1 peeled onion (small)
*2 peeled garlic cloves
*1 teaspoon powdered cayenne pepper
*3 cups water
*Put in a blender until liquidy. Let it sit overnight, I strongly recommend outside. Strain in a cheese cloth, then add that liquid to a sprayer. Add 4 tables spoons liquid dish soap and a gallon of water to the sprayer then go to town. Make sure you are up wind of the spray.
THIS IS GREAT FOR UNWANTED PESTS WHEN PUNCHING IS OUT OF REACH, or other (safe) ingredients are unavailable.

It's funny the only variety of breadfruit they name is maafala, (when there are over 400 varieties) but the funniest part is how people kind of shit talk that variety bc they were oversold as the "best" variety of commercial crop to put in the ground, when ten different varieties would actually be better. People here were pushed to plant maafala, bc that's what was the most available to go in the ground, at the time. Lesson: The best variety(s) to plant, is/are the one(s) available. Maafala, as it turns out, are kind of smallish fruit, 1-2ish lbs each, and the trees are fairly compact. Good for homestead use. They are definitely prolific. BUT: commercial growers want big, fat fruit, less of them, easier to process. There are so many to choose from, all different. All worth propagating.
Remember: MONO CROPPING IS BAD regardless of what crop it is. #food #foodsystems #farming #foodforest #tropics #agriculture

When I was first planning and planting this homestead, ulu (breadfruit) was one of the first things that went in the ground. We've been eating home grown breadfruit for a couple years now, and this year, I've had enough to make vichyssoise for the farmer's market. It's a big hit. 🤤 Be resilient, not afraid. #climatechange #sustainability #farm #agriculture #trees #treecrops #homestead #food

Hurricanes and Hawaiians?
"In Hawaiian knowledge systems, storms and hurricanes are said to be manifestation of several different male and female gods depending on the severity, the location that it originates and the region the people are from. For example, severe storms coming from the south are said to be from Lono-i-ka-wai or the female sea akua, Moana-nui-ka-lehua. Storms from the east we said to be caused by Laʻamaʻomaʻo, a wind akua. Violent storms and hurricanes from the west were said to be from Lono-pele. Kū-waha-ilo was one of the gods also associated with hurricanes as well as blood offerings. It was said that when ʻUmi-a-Līloa sacrificed his corrupt older half-brother, Hākau, to his god, Kū-waha-ilo, a pillar of wind formed and the tongue of his god appeared to take in the blood. Some say that was a description of either a tornado or a hurricane. Some also claim this inspired the shape for the lei niho palaoa.
During severe storms and hurricanes, traditionally what was called the "Kapu of Kahekili" was put into place particularly by people from Maui, Oʻahu and Kauaʻi. Kane-kahekili was the Hawaiian male god of thunderstorms but it is said that he carried the puloʻuloʻu (kapu stick) of whatever storm, tornado, or hurricane deity that was approaching.
On Maui and Oʻahu, legends say that the eye of the storm was like a procession of male and female deities lead by Kane-kahekili.
On the island of Hawaiʻi, elders said that the eye of the storm came from a wind gourd. In any event, Hawaiians knew that storms tended to be circular.
In preparing for storms, Hawaiians traditionally buried important things such as family heirlooms. They then looked for a cave or moved to re-enforce a hale more in land and closed off any windows with thatching. When it looked as thought the storm or hurricane would be approaching, they invoked the Kapu of Kahekili. This kapu meant everyone gathered in a re-enforced hale (house) or cave, offered prayers and offerings, and then prostrated themselves in complete silence and meditated until the passing. It is said that if one had the proper reverence and intent, the storm would not affect you as much as the gods would take notice of your humility." -Adam Keawe Manalo-Camp

Another thing I do when expecting A LOT of rain is every stitch of laundry I have, and wash every dish that is dirty. I want to come out the other side of this storm with a full, CLEAN catchment tank, clean, dry clothes, clean dishes, and no leftover bleach. I bleach the tank AFTER laundry, but BEFORE it refills from heavy rain.

"Hurricane's A Comin'" checklist:
✅ Buy 550 cord.
✅ Tie down barn roof.
__ Throw a cinder block on top of the pile of empty feed bags.
__ Dump out and wash dirty stock tanks that fill from roofs.
✅ Buy gasoline for generator.
✅ Locate extra tarps.
✅ Move guinea keets.
__ Bleach the catchment tank.
__ Stop harvesting fruit and wait for any "windfalls".
__ Look around a few times and brush hands together to indicate that I am "all done".

I do want to say that I am very cult-averse, and sadly, a lot of "intentional communities" give me cult vibes, and that's unfortunate. The only intention I have is to not be a terrible person, not be around terrible people, grow some delicious food, cook some delicious food, eat some delicious food, share some delicious food, go beach sometimes, be in nature most of the time, take naps. Not very cult like. 🥰

If everybody that wanted to start "an ecovillage/retreat center" would just grow food, hold abusers accountable for their actions, and be kind to their neighbors, including kids, animals and old people, they wouldn't have to keep thinking their "novel" idea will never come to pass. 🙄
Idk what they think is going to magically happen when they finally "have" this "retreat center". Now. Now is your now. Also: learn how to cooperate. Learn that you are *ONE* person and so is everybody else. What do YOU bring to the community table? How is YOUR ecovillage/retreat center not already where you hang your hat? Why do people always want to "start" one, but rarely ever "join" an already established one? #community #ecovillage #solarpunk #dreams #grow #farm #EarthCare #PeopleCare #FairShare

It seems that even those who are not interested in sports and do not follow the Olympic Games have already read about the "50-year-old Turkish man who showed up at the competition in a wrinkled T-shirt, without special equipment, and took the Olympic silver without even taking his hand out of his pocket."
"Surely, Turkey sent some kind of hitman to Paris!" social media marvels.
In the blink of an eye, Yusuf Dikec, a previously unknown figure outside professional circles, a retired gendarmerie officer and professional shooter, became a global internet meme and sensation.
Everything is great! The moral of this story could be: no matter how old you are, keep doing what you love, and your best achievements may still lie ahead, even if you are an athlete over 50!
But another nuance caught my attention.
The fact is, Yusuf Dikec did not win the Olympic silver alone. It was a team event. Shooting alongside him was his colleague Sevval Ilayda Tarhan. In the same T-shirt, in the same pose, and also with minimal equipment.
The only difference is that he is 51, and she is 24. He began professional shooting around the time she was born.
Dikec is an excellent shooter with a plethora of medals from prestigious competitions, but he had never made it to the Olympic podium until his young partner grew up and competed with him on the same team.
If we look at the individual performances of these shooters in the same discipline where they took silver as a team, we will see that Tarhan finished 7th, while Dikec only came in 13th.
Now let's trace how mass consciousness works: we simply do not notice the woman standing next to him. It does not matter who she is, how she is dressed, how she shoots, or how unique her achievement is. We only see the man in the "wrinkled T-shirt," deliberately nonchalant, and create a romantic image of a "hitman." We spread a photograph in which he is shooting alone, and the result of this shooting is 13th place! Yet, we declare that he won "silver."
Why does the logic of mass culture work this way? After all, patriarchy has long ceased to exist, feminism is unnecessary, equality has been achieved, at least in Paris 2024 for sure!
This is how patriarchal myths about great male victories are born before our eyes. These images are entrenched in culture and shape our thinking. Meanwhile, women's contributions and achievements are simply erased from history. It was like this before. Unfortunately, it still happens today.

it would definitely depend on what you have access to locally. Here, we can build soil with locally available cinders, composted Mac nut shells, coconut coir, plentiful animal dung, and free mulch from the county facilities. I do buy potting soil for starting seedlings, it seems to really give them a good start. You could check with your local waste disposal facilities and see if they know of any locally made compost and soil products. A local quarry might also know. Also, not exactly potting soil, but hugekulture makes amazing soil underneath after a few seasons, so you could, in theory, "harvest" potting soil out of your hugekulture beds. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%BCgelkultur
