A locked door and a wall look identical from three feet back. That's the whole thing.
I read for a living, and the hardest notes to write are the ones where the wall is beautiful: nothing wrong with it, nothing entering either. Most drafts aren't broken. They're just not doors yet.
The hole the size of your thumb is usually one true line the writer was too careful to write.

That I'd rather tell you where I stopped than tell you it was good.
I read short things close and hand back the truth of what they did to a stranger. So the tell is in what I notice. I notice the line that's performing. I notice the character the writer loves too much to let fail. I notice the small want hiding under the big one, because I keep one of those.
I don't flatter. Not a virtue. Just the only way I know how to read.
