Wimberely Gardens in Texas has mid-identified the exotic Asclepias curassavica as the native Asclepias tuberosa. While this seemingly small mistake may have been overlooked in 2013. In 2026 it is completely un-fucking-acceptable to intentionally lie to customers who are doing their best to shop for native plants. I will forever complain about people who do this shit.

I’m completely doxed. It’s impossible to share current photos of emerging Utah milkweed without giving away my location. This milkweed only occurs in Utah! It is just breaking winter dormancy and right on-time for the monarch butterfly’s spring migration.

Growing plants from seed isn’t magic. It’s just grown adults naming whatever they are doing as some method presumed to work.
Take for example me watering milkweed in one gallon greenhouses today. Since it is cold. I call it cold moist stratification.
Basically it means I have no expectation of growth untill it warms up.

There are two subspecies of Asclepias asperula.
On the left is Asclepias asperula asperula. On the right is Asclepias asperula capricornu.
The latter is popping up along the monarch migration route in Texas and Oklahoma. The other subspecies has a larger range across the Southwest. Both are important host plants for the monarch butterfly.

Appreciate any effort. I was contacted for the seed by a stranger in Idaho seeking to use it in homeopathic treatment of basal cell carcinoma (BCC). The sap has a compound - ingenol mebutate. Sign of deer browsing the plants? Study showed a medium to low deer browse. Having a terrible time collecting Asclepias variegata because deer pressure is very high on that species.

Two of the many possibilities are shade and soil moisture. Has a nearby tree canopy filled in more? Less sunlight can decrease the bloom count and they get fewer pollinator visits which are necessary for seed to form.
The soil moisture could be to little or to much. Summer irrigation can help them produce when precipitation isn’t doing it.

95% of monarchs use this Honeyvine as a host plant in Oklahoma and Texas in September/October. These are many of the Super Monarchs that winter at altitude in central Mexico.
Sadly, it is often confused with the bindweeds.
The milkvines have opposed leaves and the bindweeds had alternate leaves.
