AFAIK on iOS there’s no on-device way to search or view the contents any of the internal system databases without jailbreaking (which has become increasingly difficult to do), but there are digital forensics tools (both commercial & open source) that can enumerate them – this is the sort of tool that the FBI used

Signal’s database #encryption wasn’t the problem in this instance, it was the amount of detail in the content of push notifications (and it’s persistence) in the iOS APN database
choosing to use a #Signal fork like #Molly instead of the official client brings its own set of risks and trade-offs to be weighed in the context of your specific threat model

I’ve been toying around with different distros in VMs & find #Dolphin OK enough that I’ve installed it on my actual current-but-soon-to-be-ex #PopOS† install, but it’s from #KDE-land so doesn’t understand #GNOME light / dark mode & consistently blinds me… 🕶️
I’m enjoying #Debian 13 KDE atm, & it seems like it will probably support the old (beast) laptop I’m using for all things Linux
I think I found #Thunar OK when I was playing with an #XFCE install on something recently but really need to revisit it & I’m not sure that it’ll integrate well if I end up running KDE #Wayland rather than… well, XFCE 🤪 (or anything else GNOME-y)

we’re at a rental property for our honeymoon! 🎉🎉🎉 👰‍♀️👰‍♀️🐶 🚣‍♀️🐶🚣‍♀️ (that’s not the #enshittified part 🤪)
the house has a “smart” (🙄) TV – so far I’ve removed 3 previous still-logged-in Google account profiles, disabled analytics & “data sharing” in three different places, turned off all the Google / Alexa integration bullshit (especially the microphone wake word!), etc., etc. 😩
but at least one profile is still “remembered” somewhere in the settings, since if you open the “set up Google assistant” page (to make sure everything’s turned off), it “helpfully” pre-fills the account box with the email of one of the (obviously-not-really-)deleted accounts
(I’ll probably email that person & let them know that I’ve logged out of their account for them & suggest that maybe they should do that themselves next time they log in to their account on some rando’s TV… 🤪)
and of course, despite us def never logging in to any apps on some rando’s TV & only running stuff on our own laptops connected via HDMI, we still run the risk of the TV snitching on us via totally undisclosed & in-opt-outable #AutomatedContentRecognition (#ACR) tech – this particular TV is a #TCL one, one of the brands named in a new #lawsuit in… ✷checks notes✷ …#Texas (😳 but also 🎉)

at a ***bare minimum*** I want my masto client to default to using a **VERY different** /contrasting background colour for DMs (that I can customise to taste) AND throw a CW-style banner across the top for good measure AND keep DMs in a separate in-app feed / view to all other toots. a tiny outline icon of an inbox in the same colours & style as all other toots just doesn’t cut it 😤

^ I have old eyes, so I tend to run most app text size at 120% – but I’ve checked the toolbar layout at other text sizes all the way down to 80% & it doesn’t change the elements presented, so the tabs button / icon doesn’t disappear ’coz I’m running larger text sizes, it’s just a crap design decision 💁‍♀️

my 90 year-old dad died last night after a very long life, a long decline, multiple hospitalisations, and the last couple of months spent in hospital & a repat facility
lots of complex feelings for me, but I’m glad he no longer needs to struggle in difficult circumstances (largely of his own creation, but still ❤️‍🩹)
when he was young, he travelled the world in the Merchant Navy in the loud, hot bellies of large cargo ships amongst the enormous engines with pistons several times taller than himself. he only spent a short time in each port – a tasting menu, you might say – but he felt that he had seen the entire world by the time he got married
he worked many jobs in his long career, most of them spent bending metal to his will, often shaping machines into new forms to perform tasks for which they were never originally designed. he worked long hours to provide financially for his family – which he saw as his main duty in life – but also because he loved working with machines & solving engineering problems born of metal. grease. electricity.
he was a fitter & turner, a boiler-maker, a repairer & maintainer, a “keeper-runnerer”, a tinkerer. he used tools to design & make other tools to make machines. I’m sure that some of my own interests & skills were influenced by growing up watching him execute his craft, hearing him talk about his work, & being dragged along to yet another industrial robot exhibition 😩😜
he was a life-long learner, and my own love of 🤔 – or at least facility with – computers & electronics & code (oh my!) were things he saw (and understood) and supported. in the late 1970s or very early 1980s he took a programming course (which was the spelling at the time 😜) at the local TAFE, and he took me along – a rare opportunity in that era. my first hands-on experience with code at 11 or 12 years old was in the form of mapping out & writing programmes down by hand on graph paper & then encoding them on a stack of mark sense cards with a B2 pencil to be fed into a card reader (and drawing that all-important diagonal line down the side of the stack with said pencil – #IYKYK 😆)
it wasn’t long until I had begged sufficiently & got my very first computer (that we absolutely couldn’t really afford), a #CoCo – the original #TRS80 #ColorComputer model in “battleship grey” with 16K RAM 😲, later upgraded to a whopping 64K 🤯 🤯
I still have that computer over 40 years later 😊
after he retired, he always had several ambitious plans on the boil (less charitable folks might call them “hare-brained schemes” 🙃), including a petrol-powered all-terrain tracked wheelchair for a friend who wanted to be able to travel off the beaten path under his own (metaphorical) steam. it would have ended up weighing about a tonne & absolutely would never have worked (safely), but he was determined to “help” a friend & excited to work on solving an interesting engineering challenge, once again bending metal and machinery to his purpose *du jour*
he was happiest noodling in his workshop, oil- & grease-stained hands deep inside a machine, wielding – or welding – a new tool of his own design. I always associated the smell of machines and ozone with his presence. until after he retired I never saw his hands unstained by years of ingrained, immovable grease
in his later years he discovered #3Dprinting and became a journeyman #maker of sorts. he was exceptionally proud (and a bit obnoxious) when he was able to “teach the professionals at #U3A a thing or two” about his new hobby. his idea of a conversation had always been (impatiently) waiting for you to take a breath so he could tell you the next thing he was interested in – usually unconnected to whatever you’d shared 💁‍♀️
he used a succession of smallish 3D printers to make many, many Japanese-inspired lanterns (into which he stuffed various strings of coloured flashing lights) and Chinese-inspired dragons, amazed & delighted that additive manufacturing was able to create interlocking objects right off the print bed – after having spent a lifetime creating sometimes-intricate interlocking components using tried-and-true subtractive manufacturing processes. he gave most of these prints away to others – whether they wanted them or not 😆
he was a fitter & turner, a boiler-maker, a repairer & maintainer, a “keeper-runnerer”, a tinkerer
and he was my father

I’m visiting #MEL for a few days for my dad’s 90th (‼️) birthday… 🎉
…and got a call from one of his friends this morning before I left for the airport that he’d had a(nother) fall 😕
he’s now in the hospital ER with that friend, waiting for some scans to be done. I’m heading there as soon as I get checked in to my hotel. will likely be there a while, but at least I can take him home afterwards (assuming they don’t admit him overnight for obs)
his alert button / fall detector didn’t trigger, so he may have fell progressively rather than a hard fall, which is perhaps encouraging, but still 😕 so I’m gonna need to do a refresher with him to remind him that he can push the button manually to send an alert and / or call me or another emergency contact rather than having to get himself to his phone
I’ll also see if I can pull accelerometer data from the alert button (I’m not holding my breath on that) to see if I can identify why the alert didn’t trigger – I’m guessing that it was below the preset threshold, but would be good to confirm / disprove 🫠
