More data about “plant blindness,” but also a completely hilarious window into how #grasses are a total mystery to just about everyone, even when they are ridiculously common and abundant. Expected ability to ID is literally zero. 🤪

I hope someone can point you to better advice than this, but I had something similar happen to me, and my takeaway from the experience is, be politely non compliant with anyone claiming to want to talk with me who is *already recording.* A sincerely interested would-be journalist should ask for consent first before recording you.
I assumed good faith and engaged, and of course I wasn’t ready for it.

Next, Dogwood, just opening. Classic understory tree in mid-Atlantic forests. The “petals” are actually bracts. The flower is the nondescript little cluster of green ball in the center. Since they are not open, it is technically not blooming.

I’m actually pretty allergic to chrysanthemums! So I wouldn’t be trying that. If we ever hit the stage of post-industrial civilization where we don’t have DEET or permethrin, we will probably be at the point where we can use traditional land management techniques like prescribed fire and minimizing scrub instead.

Yeah, the main reason not to DIY permethrin is that it only lasts for (if I recall correctly) 6-7 washes. It also makes me nervous having the liquid in the same space as my cats, which is probably kinda irrational, but you know how cats can be.
My skin is very sensitive as well, but permethrin-treated clothes have never bothered me. They say that, once it’s in the cloth, it’s tightly bound with the cloth and doesn’t really escape.

… because there is permethrin for your clothes. When I go out in tall grass, I’m completely covered with treated clothes, except for my face and hands. There are multiple ways to approach this, but I do not recommend DIY because it doesn’t last as long and the chemical is toxic to cats until dry. Getting your clothes treated professionally is cheap, like $10 per item.
If your budget is tiny, get permethrin-treated socks, tuck in your pants, and use DEET on skin and clothes. 2/2

The avoidance advice here is solid. I would argue with the list of effective natural repellants — not because they aren’t somewhat effective, but because they simply aren’t effective enough. So long as DEET and permethrin are available, I’d prefer them as more effective.
Caveats: DEET is sometimes sold in stupidly high concentrations, like 98 percent. That’s way too much for your skin. 20-30 percent is adequate for a day outside. I still try to minimize DEET … 1/2

This is a solid list. Japanese barberry and English ivy are all over the suburban landscape around here. That’s not the only reason there are too many ticks, but they certainly contribute to the problem.

My understanding is that it’s strictly a reaction to *mammal* proteins, so chicken and fish are still okay. Of course, you have to become extremely diligent about prepared foods, because of the potential for cross-contamination.

Same here. The main reason I think it’s important to be aware of Alpha-Gal is that it keeps people like me from having a false sense of security if they live in an area where the Lone Star tick is dominant. It doesn’t transmit Lyme, but it’s not benign.

The cardinal flower, Lobelia cardinalis, is a water-loving native plant that is even more beautiful in life than in a photo — it has a deep velvety richness that a photo just can’t capture. Always a treat to see it. Butterflies and hummingbirds also love it as a nectar source.

I don’t know if you heard, but there was a massive sewage leak upstream on the Potomac, so nobody should be harvesting anything there. We do have a few struggling aquatic grasses, but I don’t know the species and it’s only occasionally that some washes up onto the shore.

I’m getting an uncomfortable feeling that the “just plant trees” crusade of the last decade might be the same thing as the “save the bees” crusade of the one prior.
I’m also darkly suspecting that these things are designed to divert the energy of environmental activism into harmless-seeming, feel-good side-channels that leave the larger destructive systems untouched.
And always seem to cause more harm than good.

As they point out in the article, the management decisions are highly site-specific. If it’s a wasteland for miles around, go wild with the invasives.
But, wow. The sedge that’s been missing for more than a century? How did it get back there? One gets the impression that somewhere off in a forgotten corner, some plants have been quietly biding their time.

I’m with you: Let the plants decide. It’s never clear how much human intervention is helpful, but the track record thus far suggests that the prudent thing is for people to do less. Maybe reintroduce some species and see if they take hold, and maybe remove “crap plants” to let plants that take longer to establish have a chance. But then stand back and let evolution do its thing.

Well, my next question would be bird flu. I only ask because I know that scavenging birds like vultures are super-vulnerable to picking it up from diseased waterfowl locally. But that’s along a major migratory route along the east coast.
If that’s not it, have there been rat problems that would cause people to put out rat poison? Another issue for scavengers.

Tiny harbingers of spring: blooms of my native hazelnut, Corylus americana.The left photo is the male inflorescence, which you can see is starting to open up in preparation for releasing pollen. The right photo, taken a couple inches further up the same branch, is the itty-bitty female flower.
You really need to be looking closely to notice these.

All good suggestions! I would also add, however, that you should limit the amounts you collect to just a few. People tend to underestimate their impact. Also, don’t collect seed too early. If it’s fully mature, it will come off the plant quite easily.
If a species is well suited to your property, it will flower and set seed for you (may take a few years) and you can collect all you want from those plants!

Putting this out here for future reference. @npub1fn5…2e3g 's thread about Carob -- and discussion of other trees that are also legumes, like Redbud, Cercis canadensis -- sent me down a fun #botany rabbit hole about another tree in that category, Black Locust, Robinia pseudoacacia. I've always loved to eat its flowers raw off the tree, but could the pods also be edible? Maybe.
But here is a lovely recipe (in French) for Beignets de fleurs d'acacia. Next year I'm trying this.

#covid update!
Two of daughter’s co-workers have it & were in the office, masked; she danced with someone yesterday who now has it; her boyfriend is coughing; she’s negative for now.
My sister is ok but weak. My dad (89) tested positive for 3 days but is neg now and never had symptoms.
I got a #covid booster and flu shot today at CVS with zero fuss. There are concerns about what the CDC vax committee might do Friday. Unless your most recent shot was less than 2 mos ago, consider going NOW.

Why should you not go out into the woods and gather your own bowl of Pawpaw fruit? Isn’t there plenty for everyone?
The chart illustrates. No, there is NOT enough for everyone. Humans have driven the non-human living word into very narrow margins. This is one of the many reasons humans are driving a planet-wide mass extinction event.
Please, don’t make #foraging a new way for humans to colonize and extract from a suffering planet. Maybe take a sample and no more. Grow more habitat instead.

Pawpaw news! Here you see the first harvest of a Pawpaw tree (North America’s largest native fruit) I planted almost a decade ago.
Sitting in the bowl, they were almost *overpoweringly* aromatic, and the scent was sweet. Processed, they yielded three cups of pulp and a lot of seeds. The pulp went into two loaves of sweetbread.
And that’s it for this year!

I have a sacrificial front yard that’s designed to communicate to the neighborhood that I’m respecting the norms here and keeping a (little bit of a) trimmed lawn. Mullet landscaping: Party in the back.
And then I get volunteers like this Cut-leaf Grape Fern, Sceptridium dissectum. What a little treasure! Lucky me!
But I can’t just *mow* it. I guess I’m going to cross my fingers and try relocating it.
I feel like I need to keep everyone alive.

Well, I don't need much encouragement to share these. :)
Clockwise from upper left:
1. Cardinal flower, Lobelia cardinalis. No photo can do justice to how beautiful the color is -- like radiant velvet.
2. Swamp Rose-mallow, Hibiscus moscheutos. A bee favorite.
3. New York Ironweed, Vernonia noveboracensis. Tolerates wet feet but also grows in sunny meadows.
4. Pickerelweed, Potnedaria cordata. Beloved of bees and butterflies.

Glad to hear this. I’m trying scarlet runner beans this year, purely for a decorative screen, and I’ve gotten almost zero flowers. I don’t get it.
You are making me wonder whether winter sowing (which I’ve only done with wildflower seeds) might work for beans.
