Kgothatso Ngako (KG) (@nprofile…qqv2) has been building tools that make #Bitcoin and Bitcoin literature accessible to Africans for years now.
In 2022, he launched @nprofile…uu29, which enabled Africans to use bitcoin via feature phones.
Years prior, he created Exonumia, open-source technology through which Bitcoin texts could be translated into various African languages.
And recently, he launched http://mantra.press, a #Nostr client that serves as a decentralized translation management tool.
I recently caught up with KG to get a walkthrough of how Mantra works. We also talked about surviving this era of Bitcoin software vulnerabilities, building despite setbacks, and why he isn't going anywhere, despite the challenges we're currently facing in the Bitcoin space.
Enjoy!

As @nprofile…37x2 explains in the post below, the #Revolut data breach is the result of weaponized compliance culture, which has led to what the Open Dialogue Foundation terms "transnational financial repression."
In the clip below, Lyudmyla explains what transnational repression is and why it's so important that we push back on policies that enable it.

I crunched some numbers to get a sense of what a minimum wage income and the median family income in the U.S. would look like if they'd increased as much as the the price of gold has increased since the U.S. left the gold standard in 1971.
The results were both quite sobering and highly indicative of why the U.S. is facing such staggering wealth inequality today.

It seems like the Indian government's recent attempt to shut down #Bitchat is part of a broader effort the government is making to hinder private messaging in the country.
Earlier this month, the government issued notices to Telegram and Signal asking them to explain why the apps allow users to post messages without providing their phone numbers.
The government also recently directed WhatsApp to freeze the rollout of a new username feature, citing that it could increase online fraud.

In this first part of a three-part series for @nprofile…lydp, I tell the story of how Fai and Kostro’s respective work in the food delivery business played a role in their finding one another, which ultimately led to them cooking together.

Bitcoin doesn’t need a new narrative for its price to rebound.
It just needs more and more people to use it as it was intended to be used — as freedom money.
And most of the people using it as such and teaching others to use it in such a manner, those who are building circular economies, are too busy to sit around pondering and crafting Bitcoin’s next narrative.
Firstly, they understand that talk is cheap.
Secondly, there’s no need for them to formulate a narrative, because they ARE the Bitcoin story.
They’re the ones showing the world that Bitcoin wasn’t created to be an asset trapped within a broken system but a new protocol for money and freedom.
So, if you really want to see bitcoin’s “price” rebound, take this “bear market” as an opportunity to educate people how to use bitcoin as it was intended to be used — as peer-to-peer electronic cash.

YIL that Illinois governor J. B. Pritzker, who just signed a bill that mandates a 0.2% tax on companies transacting with or storing crypto, once had five toilets removed from his second mansion as part of a tax fraud scheme.
He had the mansion rendered “uninhabitable” so to pay significantly less in property taxes. He ended up not paying over $500k he otherwise would have had to have paid (until he got caught and had to pay some of that money back).
The point is that the person who wants to make it more costly for reputable Illinois-based Bitcoin companies like @nprofile…9pf8 to do business is also the person who isn’t a fan of paying taxes himself.

The Venezuelan🇻🇪 developer, who has 20+ years of experience in the open-source space, could work on anything but focuses his time and effort on @nprofile…nkst , which enables those living countries in crisis (e.g., #Cuba) to access #Bitcoin.
In this, his first interview in English, we discuss:
⚡️ How his experience watching the economic situation in his home country deteriorate informs the work he does
⚡️ How Mostro is built to be used in the harshest and most technologically-unfriendly environments
⚡️ Why Mostro utilized #Nostr
⚡️ What's currently happening in Venezuela
⚡️ Why the open-source future is bright
It was a tremendous honor to speak with Calderón.
This conversation was a strong reminder of not only how powerful freedom tech can be but the fact that it takes sincere, committed people like Calderón to bring this tech to life.
Finally, thank you to the @nprofile…qcqg and @nprofile…aa5u teams for highlighting how the communities with whom you work use Mostro in my recent interviews with you. You inspired me to reach out to Calderón to have this conversation.

Many of us came to #Bitcoin because of this new system's potential to (re)distribute power.
Ideas from political philosophies such as #Libertarianism and #Anarchy permeated much of the early discourse in the Bitcoin space.
But in recent years, a sense of #authoritarianism and #elitism has crept in, making this space feel less unique and more like many traditional spaces.
I recently sat down with Hannah Rosenberg of Lightning Labs to discuss this shift, whether or not human beings are unavoidably hierarchical, and if the circle of those who believe in earlier Bitcoin vision can be expanded.

Over the past few years, I've gotten to know Hermann (@nprofile…pjus) from @nprofile…reg0 and the story of his Bitcoin journey quite well.
So, when he said to me that @npub1su3…cngd / @nprofile…3y7d is "one of the most interesting and impactful things I've ever come across in Bitcoin," it gave me pause.
I'm obviously a proponent of the technology, as I work for Fedi, but it hit differently to hear Hermann say this, as 1.) he's been into Bitcoin for quite some time and 2.) he's been not only been learning about new Bitcoin tech for years now, but, in recent years, he has to consider how this new tech affects the community he serves.
And he said that Fedimint/Fedi has already had quite the impact on the Bitcoin Ekasi community, and that he feels what he's witnessed thus far is only the beginning.
What is more, it was also heartwarming to hear Hermann recount Eric Sirion recent visit to Bitcoin Ekasi. He couldn't speak highly enough of not only how incredible of a developer Eric, the founder of Fedimint, is, but just how decent of a person he is, as well.
More on all of this in the piece below.
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

I met Faisal Saeed Al Mutar, President of Ideas Beyond Borders in Bitcoin and @nprofile…rzcm circles and have always appreciated his decency, optimism, and commitment to human rights.
Faisal, an Iraqi-American who fled Iraq in the wake of the fall of Saddam Hussein, tends to see the best in people, despite the challenges he's had to confront in his life. (Or maybe because he's had to confront and overcome those challenges.)
So, I reached out to him to speak about Iran because I was hoping that he was seeing something, some sort of a silver lining, that I, and just about everyone else I've spoken with on the matter, can't see.
While he didn't necessarily offer said silver lining in our conversation, he did share a very nuanced view on the matter, which, as someone who's just trying to understand better what's happening, I very much appreciated.
In our conversation we discussed:
• The best and worst case scenarios for the Iran conflict
• An ethnic and religious overview of Iranians (not all Iranians are Persians)
• Why and how Iran isn't Venezuela
• Whether or not the majority of Iranians want regime change
• Important details about the Straight of Hormuz and who might control it moving forward
• Bitcoin adoption in the Middle East
plus more.
While some of the information in the conversation is out of date at this point since we recorded late last week, what Faisal offered in this conversation is still quite valuable for looking to learn more about how things work in Iran and the Middle Eastern region more broadly.

Coinbase also just don’t seem to care about bitcoin. They even hold ten times more fiat on their balance sheet than they do bitcoin.

⚡️ What it's like to teach Bitcoin in Cuba

Forte and Catrya's story is a true testament to how Bitcoin represents the will of the people, and how people like them are the protagonists in the Bitcoin story who bring the technology to life and make it usable for everyday people.

I’d love something like that, as well!

That it is, and I’m guessing I did something like that.
That may have worked but having to hope no one found the nsec is a little anxiety-inducing for me.

No recovery, unfortunately. And I didn’t lose it. It was compromised.
Had to create a new account (this one).

Just wanted to take a minute to thank everyone who helped point people in the direction of this new account today and also extend one more massive thank you to @nprofile…x3qd and @nprofile…clsr.
I found out my old nsec had been compromised early yesterday evening, and it was quite a punch to the gut. I felt vulnerable, as I had no idea how the private key was discovered/compromised (I still don’t).
Thoughts like “I’m done with Nostr” went through my mind for a moment. It’d been a stressful few weeks starting a new gig and the last thing I felt like dealing with was getting this new npub established.
But @nprofile…clsr reached out right when he saw that the account had been compromised (someone shared that it had been here on Nostr) and offered to help in any way he could. He was online with me last night until after 10 PM ET building tools for me to help transfer my info from my old account to a new one.
He was also the one who put me in touch with @nprofile…x3qd, who, by this morning when I woke up, had already messaged me saying he’d transfer my Primal Legend status to my new npub. One hour after I respond to him, the status had been transferred. He also helped me with the messaging to make sure people knew my old nsec had been compromised and that the new account/npub was legit.
Then, as all the zaps and support came in this morning, I was reminded of why I came to Nostr in the first place: the community.
We’re all here trying to build this thing out together, and when I stumbled, you all helped me back up. In the process, my feeling of vulnerability inverted. I feel more supported by this community than ever, and I’m deeply grateful for that.
As a thank you to @nprofile…x3qd, I’m going to purchase a Primal Premium subscription for my other account - @nprofile…0ygv. As for @nprofile…clsr, I often see him around NYC, so I’ll have to get him a drink or pay him back in some other way.
And there was also one last thing I wanted to share about him…
It felt quite serendipitous that I published a piece this morning on another community he supports, the @nprofile…8z9x community.
I’m sharing the piece below just to show you all how good of a guy he is both here amongst the Nostriches and IRL.
https://www.fedi.xyz/blog/community-spotlight-harlem-bitcoin
He’s a true believer in freedom tech and community. We’re extremely lucky to have both him and @nprofile…x3qd in this space with us, and I’d once again just like to say how grateful I am for how they both helped me out in the last 24 hours.
Much love, @nprofile…clsr, @nprofile…x3qd, and Nostr fam.
Onward 🫡

One of the first punk bands I ever saw live.
Saw them with Bouncing Souls in NYC in November of 1997.
