Happy Friday #nostr. Put this one out a few days ago as we connected with a local brewery to pickup 300 lbs. of spent grain weekly. Great way to work together and find solutions for his waste and our need for feed. The pigs and my wallet are very happy!

Unfortunate update: she did not make it through the night. Felt somewhat optimistic last night that she was moving a bit but contacted a livestock vet anyway. Unfortunately she took a turn and was gone before we even got a response. Tough loss for sure and I’m thinking there’s a good chance it was a retained placenta as you mentioned. Costly lesson learned but we’ll be better prepared for our next lambing which could literally happen any day.
On a more positive note, the lambs are doing well. We’re quickly shifting to bottle feeding and they seem to be adjusting to it fine.
I really appreciate all the help and quick responses from this community! Really amazing to see what can happen when you get good people on a free platform. Thank you everyone!! #grownostr

Question for anyone who has raised sheep. We just had twin lambs two days ago and the ewe is now acting really lethargic and just wants to lay down. She seemed fine this morning but doesn’t really want to move much now. However she is getting up for the lambs to feed and seems fine to do that. I’m hoping maybe just tired and lacking some nutrients but fear infection. Any thoughts?? I appreciate it!

As I’m planning our new ~5 acre pasture, I need to figure out how we’ll energize the fence. Most likely just going to replicate this one again as it’s been running hot since day 1 and requires no connection to grid power.
Isn’t the cheapest option but would highly recommend due to convenience and ability to charge your fencing far from the power source.

They’re Hampshire and American Guinea Hog Crosses. My gut tells me a little more Hamp but they are a little slower to grow as well. Either way they’ve been great. Trying to grow them out a little longer this time around

Almost always 4 in the morning. Sometimes 5. Then I’ll often use 1-2 over some ground meat for dinner. Pretty much 90-95% carnivore so eggs are a staple.

We actually don’t use minerals. Their diet is primarily feed, table scraps and whatever they naturally forage.
I guess my setting was a bit misleading haha as that’s where I typically feed them so it’s pretty bare and probably not very appealing to dig up. They have most of their pen dug up which I don’t mind because we had all sorts of thick underbrush that they’re clearing out.
Interesting point though. I could definitely see that as a way to lessen their need to root

Appreciate that. I did have some poly wire inside the fence to sort of move them around this spring. It did work well. Unfortunately our setup is with woven wire as the perimeter. I haven’t had a ton of breakouts but if it continues I’ll probably run a wire along the bottom

Today we processed 45 chickens and all I have to show is a picture of the coolers….
Once we get going there’s no stopping. Took just short of two hours to harvest. Let them sit in the walk in cooler for most of the day then parted out this evening. Finally had two days with some heavy rains. Hoping the pastures aren’t too far gone.

Positive evening on the farm.
- Raked, loaded, and stored a wagon load of hay
- Set up some feed and water for the two freshly hatched chicks in the coop. More on the way!
- Pigs seem to be recovering from their mite issue from 2 weeks ago
- Sheep are just chilling as always. They really are easy and low maintenance.
Despite the lack of rain, we are focusing on making positive strides each day. I’ve definitely jumped head first into the farm this year and it can be overwhelming at times. Trying to simplify my approach and follow a daily Top 3 approach to getting things done.

It is DRY out here for the end of May. Pasture is brown already and couldn’t tell you the last time we’ve had rain. Very uncharacteristic for PA but hoping we got ahead of it with the extra pasture space that we put in.

Turns out that when we brought in the IPP piglets we also brought in mange mites. I noticed that they had a tendency of scratching when we got brought them here but they looked healthy and it didn’t seem excessive. Little did I know that this was just the beginning of a much larger issue.
Fast forward a little over a month and the a litter of piglets in the meantime from our Guineas and we discovered pretty clearly that all had the scratching issue and began to show the typical symptoms of scaly skin and some sores. Some worse than others and some not at all.
While I try to stay as natural as possible and medication free - I decided to treat all with an ivermectin injection. From everything I read, this is the quickest most effective method for eliminating mites.
All went fairly well with the most difficult part being catching and avoiding mama pig.
Lesson learned for all livestock moving forward: Separate stock brought in from the outside for a period of time before introducing to the rest. #homesteading #pigs #livestock #lessonlearned #farm #grownostr
