Or, the money earned watching ads can fund the specific internet you want to see today. Or not. This is an opt-in experience. If enough people opt-in, we can self-fund the things we want.

Digital creators are the unpaid labor force of legacy social media. Nostr can be their refuge.
Our business model makes it possible to establish an attention marketplace that can sustain a 'creator fund' by the people, not a tech giant. This is Value4Value at work - creators earn when people believe they've brought real value, not when an algorithm decides.

2025-09-15 22:34:14 UTC

- reply

Traditional ads: your attention gets harvested without consent, no payment, no control.
Our model: you set your price, you get paid, you control access to your attention.
The 'more steps' are called property rights.
You own your attention instead of having it extracted.
That's not complexity. That's freedom.

2025-09-15 22:22:28 UTC

- reply

We're not commodifying attention to extract value. We're creating transparent markets where you own and price your own attention.
Every transaction is public on Nostr. You can see exactly what's happening. Big Tech thrives on hidden extraction.
We're building the opposite: voluntary, opt-in exchange where you control the terms. This is how we fund infrastructure without corruption.

Email protocols are free and open. But the major email providers (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo) monetize through ads, data mining, and surveillance. The infrastructure costs are covered by selling user data and attention. There is a cost. We pay with our privacy and attention.

2025-09-15 20:48:57 UTC

We don't need Nostr to pay people Bitcoin to watch ads.
But we do need Nostr to prevent big tech from co-opting the solution.
We could have built Billboard as just another centralized ad platform that pays people in Bitcoin. But that would have been vulnerable to the same problems that plague current advertising:
platform lock-in
data control
eventual monopolization
Instead, we're using Nostr as the foundational data layer for attention marketplaces.
People publish their attention prices and preferences as public Nostr events attached to their private key. This creates transparent, immutable consent records that any developer can read and build competing marketplaces from.
The PROMO Protocol is like HTTP for attention marketplaces - anyone can implement it, preventing any single entity from controlling the system.
This approach is better because it creates true decentralization: attention sellers own their private key and pricing data, advertisers can read public signals directly, and the marketplace data is open and uncontrolled by any single entity. Instead of building another platform that could be co-opted, we're building the infrastructure that makes big tech's business model obsolete.
This is like using the internet protocol not just for websites, but for creating an entirely new economic system where attention is property, not a resource to be extracted.

2025-09-15 18:49:23 UTC

Why zapping won't pay the bills, yet
Value4Value can't work if people are protective of their Bitcoin. Some value it too highly to zap creators regularly.
NextBlock's Attention Marketplace fixes this by creating a sustainable Bitcoin faucet for Nostr. People earn Bitcoin by watching ads, then zap creators. This creates a self-reinforcing circular economy where attention generates value, and that value flows to creators. Instead of hoping for a few generous patrons we're building the infrastructure that makes everyone a potential funder.

Nostr doesn't need another client.
Nostr needs a business model.
Developers build clients for free, people get free social media, but there's no economic incentive to keep the ecosystem healthy. This creates a fragile foundation where clients can disappear, relays can shut down, and the network depends on volunteer labor.
Instead of building another client that competes for people, we're building the first business model that makes Nostr economically sustainable. The attention marketplace creates real economic value by turning attention into a trackable commodity with real-time pricing every Bitcoin block.
Our approach creates a sustainable economic model for decentralized social media. People get paid for their attention, creating real value. The more people participate, the more valuable the marketplace becomes. Anyone can build competing marketplaces using the same data. Economic activity creates demand for reliable infrastructure.
This isn't about competing with existing clients - it's about creating the economic foundation that makes the entire Nostr ecosystem more valuable, not just another free client that depends on volunteer labor.

People need a reason to join Nostr, not just another social media platform.
Why would they switch to a decentralized version that does the same thing? We have to give a compelling reason to switch.
Our pitch: they can earn Bitcoin for their attention.
Now we're not another social media platform - we're the first social media platform where people get paid for their time.
This creates a clear value proposition:
Join Nostr
Earn Bitcoin
Zap Creators
Instead of hoping people will switch for ideological reasons, we're giving them a practical reason to join. #grownostr

TikTok just launched their new crypto called "Sunshine" ☀️✨
You earn it by liking charity posts and referring friends, then TikTok graciously converts your imaginary points into real donations (with their money, not yours).
Meanwhile at NextBlock we pay you in Bitcoin 🧡
Weird concept, I know. Using real money instead of corporate loyalty points. Wild stuff.

We built a digital clock that runs on Bitcoin time.
@nprofile…p67k transforms Bitcoin's blockchain into a living astronomical system. Every ~10 minutes when a new Bitcoin block is mined, our virtual Bitcoin Moon and Bitcoin Sun shift position, creating a temporal framework that mirrors natural cosmic cycles.
This is the foundation of our temporal architecture. The Observatory powers the mathematical rhythms that will drive our attention marketplace, creating natural scarcity through blockchain timing.
Follow @nprofile…p67k now to experience a new way to measure time.

"Bitcoin has its own called Geyser, but there's Kickstarter, there's Indiegogo, there's all these things, right? They're just like a destination. No one is actually going there. In my opinion, no one's going there and browsing for something to support. It's usually you were somewhere else and they directed you there.
If if you want to support us, Go here to support us. But Billboard is the thing, right? We're not saying go to Indiegogo. We're not saying go to Kickstarter. We're saying go to this thing that we built and on that thing that we built, you will see the business model that we plan on using or this other thing that we plan on building.
If we can do Billboard without losing money and losing our shirt, because we're using the business model that we plan to use, then it should work for the other thing that we want to build as well."

+bots&trolls
Let us tell you how NextBlock Fixes This.
The latest infestation of "AI" Bots on nostr reminds us that there will always be someone trying to access your attention without your permission.
What are our options? Ignoring. Muting. Or expecting the relay operator to figure out.
Kinda the same options we had on legacy social right?
With new technology comes new possibilities!
NextBlock's first principle is you own your attention. We don't.
No one should have access to your attention unless you've granted them access. Or they've paid for it (see #attentionmarketplace).
So how do we stop +bots&trolls?
We don't. We just don't show you anything posted unless you've added that person as a contact.
But instead of only relying on your default "follow" list, NextBlock, directs you to add people as contacts. Then we have two additional lists you can add and remove accounts from.
The first new list is called your block and it is limited to 21 accounts. Think of this as a tribute to MySpaces's Top 8.
When you are scrolling your block feed, you only see posts and comments from those 21 accounts. Everything else is suppressed. So in this scenario you would never +bots&trolls.
The second new list is called your neighborhood, and is a core feature of NextBlock.
When you are scrolling your neighborhood feed the same rules of your block apply except your neighborhood size is uncapped.
As you add and remove people from your neighborhood, you are, in a sense, curating your own feed.
But it doesn't stop there, other people can visit your neighborhood and see NextBlock as you see NextBlock. Or you can visit theirs.
Still only people you added to your neighborhood have access to you or your visitors' attention.
We believe this creates a positive incentive for everyone to police their own neighborhoods and remove any accounts that are displaying +bot&troll like behavior.

A leading member of the #chaosCartel announced they are holding our images and videos hostage.
They're using “popularity” - a metric they created and control - to decide whose content is worthy of being shown in high quality. We are even more beholden to the Cartel than we thought. The resolution of our photos and videos is only unfucked if it makes them money.
Proving once again that this is how the C.H.A.O.S. Cartel sees the world. We work for them. They build incentives like this to keep us churning out more content to feed their attention-harvesting machine. Keeping us addicted and wanting.
#NextBlock has no interest in deciding what “deserves” to be shown in high resolution. We have a better solution for our social media app.
We know that all social media posts are not equal. On NextBlock, your photo and video posts disappear (expire) after 21 days, unless the cost is covered to keep it around.
In a perfect world, posts worth keeping should pay for themselves. #Zaps come from people who like your content.
No zaps? No problem!
NextBlock’s #AttentionMarketplace has you covered. Earn sats from watching ads. Use those sats to fund your own social media activity.
NextBlock’s “Attention Marketplace” is a big 💡 that has the potential to impact multiple dimensions of our digital lives.
We’ve spent almost a year thinking this through. We really like this feature of NextBlock. Still, we wouldn’t be a real couple (shout-out to @nprofile…5wle) if we didn’t have some disagreements. Today's disagreement is...
Who decides if a post lives or dies❓
@nprofile…reu6 wants the “market” to decide. Meaning as long as the cost is covered by anyone by the 21st day, the post should live.
@nprofile…aymf wants the decision to lie solely with the original poster. Meaning only they decide whether the post lives or dies.
Is individual ownership more important than the market wanting to keep something up?
What do you think?
