For #ThickTrunkTuesday an old red oak friend. All those trees in the background that look so skinny? They’re not. This oak, already old, was the central tree when this area was a picnic grove in the 1800s and very early 1900s. When it stopped being used for picnics other trees grew and shaded its wide branches so they fell off. Their remains are on the ground around the tree’s base. Owls eat in its branches and raccoons use it as a landmark. It is a grand old being. #tree #oak #nature

A path near Salvaterra do Extremo in eastern #Portugal. It’s near the border with Spain and may once have been a smugglers’ trail. Now it is mossy and overgrown, the old walls crumbling. You can’t see it here but a castle ruin is visible in the distance from some points along it. And some of the trees are overgrown with pale lichen and hanging moss. Like walking through the past. #FootPathFriday

I was going to say the same thing. I recorded simple children’s books for my son, just his favorites so he could sit near me and listen to them while I cooked or did chores. Also did the same with the intro that came with Candyland because he just wanted to hear it over and over.

Wouldn’t it freeze?
At this point I’m seeing no hummingbirds and just loads of yellow jackets on it. Plus I’m one of those who make new nectar every day and put a lot of time into cleaning it a couple times a week. Only worth it if I’m seeing them.

This is probably my favorite begonia. It’s called Fragrant Falls Peach. (There’s a Fragrant Falls Lemon too) And yes, it is beautifully fragrant although you have to get close to smell it. Ideally you would grow them in a hanging basket just high enough so you could sniff them every time you pass. 🧡 #BloomScrolling #flowers #Begonias

I wish there were a good solution. I always post alt text and I try to make it good and descriptive but it’s so brain and time intensive that it’s like a paywall for posting images. About 70% of the time if I have an image I want to post I think of writing the alt text and decide not to post it.

Part of the front steps this morning. The Daisy is ‘Lemon Puff’, the fuchsia is ‘Stand Up Pink’, and the petunia is ‘Crystal Skies’. The variegated plant is a Jacob’s ladder and I’m not sure of the variety of the million bells. Anyway, plants are awesome. #BloomScrolling #flowers

Once when I lived in a place with Norway spruces I had a warbler that stayed the winter and members of the local birding club would come with their binoculars and end up arguing about what species it was. I think one faction said it was an orange-crowned. I forget the other.
