Same here, but I like Nicholas Cage about as much as a fart in an elevator.
The whole thing is like a parody of itself, thats why its funny - sort of like how Best in Show is a mockumentary thats funny even if youve never seen a dog show. The characters are so ridiculous it’s almost like Monty Python or something

We’re definitely coming at this from very similar angles (my background is in Reformed theology).
Especially in reference to the book of Judges at a whole, where there was an overall trend of backsliding and the people of God “doing what was right in their own eyes”, with disastrous consequences.
Jephthah had set himself up for failure by asserting himself to God to bargain for victory with a sacrifice.
Before Jesus’s ultimate sacrifice, when the temple curtain was torn, only the High Priest could enter the Most Holy Place one day a year, and couldn’t even leave the room with his back turned to the Ark.
Jephthah’s role in the New Testament is more an object lesson in God’s sovereignty and that we should not see Him as an equal to be bargained with, but rather to be thankful for His grace and wisdom. Habakkuk is a great example of this.

when God had told Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, Abraham obeyed in faith and God provided the ram caught in the thicket at the last moment.
Abraham’s faith was “credited to him as righteousness” because he was obeying God, even to the point of sacrificing his own son.
This was part of God’s plan, and pointed to Jesus’s ultimate sacrifice.
Jephthah was attempting to bargain with God, not obey.
God held him to his word, again pointing to Jesus’s command: “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil. (Matthew 5:37 ESV).

I see the innumerable townhouse and condominium developments being built around here, looking like they were made of cardboard with vinyl siding.
