i care a lot about individual and communal autonomy.

my primary computing project aims to enable distributing data storage and collaboration with intermittent connectivity. it shows up a lot here.

i live in a housing coop. i'm sketching out plans for a workers coop. i'm also fascinated by the details of how cooperatives and collectives function - decision making, conflict navigation, resource allocation - and how that influences the projects they can undertake. but like all systems, cooperatives matter less than the people they support.

still in my larval form, some day i hope to metamorphose into a cat-sized robotic dragon.

i like making things. mostly functional, sometimes pretty.

i'm not much of an auditor, but…
well, the first thing it does upon receiving a packet is extract any ECN, which is a bit weird to do before deciding it's a valid packet, but it doesn't use that until after verifying and decrypting the authenticated (AES-OCB3) ciphertext.
it appears to use the same key in both directions because there is an explicit test that the packet is marked for the right direction. i don't like it, but it doesn't look to be an actual problem.
i *think* i'm seeing a single packet per keystroke, and i'm not seeing a random delay in the code. i find this concerning from a extracting keystrokes from timing perspective. but people are still arguing about whether that's a real concern for ssh…
(this is not getting into the whole terminal emulator aspect)
which brings me to, i think i trust it a bit less than i did an hour ago? but i'm not dropping it immediately now that i looked at it.

our rural internet cooperative is a week or two from being fully operational. and so when i see city folks complaining about bad internet, it's hard not to think how much easier it would have been in a city.
we'll need about 30 households to get to reasonable rates with 10Gbps transport to the nearest carrier-neutral data center and 10Gbps IP transit there. the expensive part is transport - we only have one provider willing to build out to us.
in terms of our construction costs, we've got tens of kilometers of fiber, and lots of easements to negotiate, to run to get to 30 households. that's a lot of work. it'll probably take us years to get there.
in a city? you can probably get those 30 households without crossing a street. maybe 500 meters of fiber. you probably have multiple options for transport, and maybe even an internet exchange in your city. from my perspective out here, that sounds luxurious.

GPON is asymmetric at the physical layer. XG-PON has a symmetric version though, and NG-PON is symmetric on each wavelength.
the internet cooperative i'm putting together isn't using any of those though. everyone gets their own fiber for now, with 1G or 10G symmetric. if we need to later we can do wavelength multiplexing, but i honestly don't see that happening any time soon.
