So think of Enigma as a mnemonic, a way to help frame how covenants work, while I don't intend to release any hard set protocols that are "Enigma", progress has actually been great. Owen has made some tutorials and we flushed out Cold Channels some more. We're currently discussing how to handle large groups and their associated fees. Jeremy has started updating Sapio again and hopefully we get some payment pool examples soon. Ryan's CTV playground is coming along nicely too, he's add an oracle emulation mode that would let us use CTV using a trusted oracle. Brandon is slowly gettin LN-symmetry channels up to date, apparently the APO code was mostly abandoned since mempool pinning issues were precluding a lot of things and v3 transactions are taking precedence.

So depending on what type of Template you're doing, you may to do something to mitigate someone stealing your funds, think Ark and its ALTC's. For Timeout-Trees, the casual user just always withholds their signature. For stuff like lightning channels, or for CTV, the cold channel model, the optimistic path is the keypath spend between A/B and the pessimistic paths have CSV to mitigate stealing. In the more basic templates, this type of security isn't really necessary especially if you're the sole recipient. If you have a basic batched payment pool, what you can do is make alternative paths for if A/B/C want to individually withdraw their UTXO while the other parties are split off into their own shared utxo

There's a bit of a confusion between the various proposals and CTV itself. Its job is to be a TXID lock and there's not a large design space for that. None of them are competitors to CTV. In fact, CTV has no competitors at all. It's constrained to a primitive and nothing can be added or removed. Jeremy had been working on a few proposals but dropped them in favor of CTV.
Post CTV and we have basic covenants in the market, we can better determine whether we wish for OP_VAULT or OP_CCV (matt). We'll also be able to better analyze whether we want TXHASH or TEMPLATE KEY. In both cases, it would best to have a primitive that acts as a keystone for all future upgrades.

Too bad. That means miners will forever be custodial. Ocean is attempting to do non-custodial but it's really only non-custodial for the top 15 miners, everyone else is custodialized. This also can't scale to every mining pool. There's a reason they're all custodial. Even Luke wants CTV.

I see it similarly to Linux Distros, use Core (compare it to Debian) and from there, various flavors are made. Most security related patches should always go upstream to Core and disseminate from there. Soft forks are bit of a pain points atm, Core has said they're not dealing with soft forks anymore, consensus has to be found elsewhere. So we've been trying to figure that out for the last few years

Core is your best bet, I'm tempted to spin up Knots to see what GUI changes Luke has done, I just don't agree with the default relay settings so I'd change them. Sparrow is a nice tool as well. I'll be honest, I rarely run my node, it's typically off months at a time. Peter Todd has also started his own distro called Libre Relay which has a more relaxed op_return and a new RBF called One-Shot but it's still super beta.
The thing that has really helped me learn the innards to all this was Jeremy's advent calendar that he made for CTV. I spent a good year trying to decipher it all and I'm still learning.

Not alone. It requires CTV+CSFS. For a long time, devs were saying this was a negative because they argued that APO was more efficient but actually AJ had to use CTV-emulaton in his LN-symmetry spec which has caused APO to be LESS efficient than CTV+CSFS. Here's my thread on it.

Txhash is CTVv2. It would allow you to have more flexible fees and control what happens with the committed tx's. The problem is it can be designed a hundred different ways, and I've lost confidence in the developers who are pushing it for multiple reasons. The first being, they don't actually understand CTV, they see it as "limited" because it doesn't deal with sighash flags and sets everything in stone, so they're trying to fix a problem they don't understand. They try and say that CTV is flawed because it uses CPFP more often than RBF but they don't realize (because they don't understand CTV trees) that you can't RBF in those situations or it breaks the trees because the TXID must be immutable. Another big red flag for me (besides the fact that theyve been nacking CTV for years and not producing any code to replace CTV) is that they see zero risk concerns for behaviors that txhash can do such as TXHASH+CSFS gives you drivechains and MEV. The MEV can occur because of the exact flexibility that they desire from txhash. They're also not even aware that CTV has its own upgrade path, Rearden has made one called Template Key. The difference between txhash and TK is TK is a single byte mode operator while txhash relies on multibyte sighash flags. They have zero self awareness and honesty my patience has run out with them, I am finding them to be intellectually dishonest at this point.

So this would be an issue if we used something like OP_Return instead. Let's say I made 5 transactions, hashed them just like you would in CTV but drop the hash into an op_return. You'd be absolutely right that I could doublespend the transaction because nothing is actually committing those tx's to the chain except my promise to not doublespend as it's still my private key connected to that pubkey. But with CTV, there is no private key, it's just that hash. So I can't doublespend, only those legitimate transactions can extract their portion of the UTXO can do it. When I commit my 1 CTV tx to the chain, even though those 5 tx's aren't "on the on-chain", they are still protected by consensus. Lightning does it in a similar way, those tx's aren't on chain but theyre still protected by consensus.

Addendum, interesting caveat: current thinking is that these are *one-way* channels, not regular bidirectional channels. But 1) that's still very useful in the transition era from L1>L2, and 2) I think bidrectional are possible, just haven't figured it out yet.

That information lets Phoenix verify funds exist and are ours. It can handle the technicals in the background.
The user doesn’t need to manage them directly.

Covenants’ superpower is scaling. Payment trees, where many users share one UTXO without trust, are the way - but very hard to visualise.
Here we tell Phoenix about a cold channel it owns *inside a tree*. Once standards have been developed, it's all just data to copy-paste.

That’s the basics. Cold channels means more funds readily plugged into lightning because they’re more usable, yet no less secure. On-chain becomes the fallback option, as it should be. Cold channels could even be secured by your hardware wallet!

If we do decide to exit, there’s a time delay in case WE’RE trying to steal - the LSP gets time to respond. All this involves an extra on-chain TX, with fees.
In this case, we never told the LSP about the channel, so even now we’re at no risk from them, even if they’re evil.

When we tap “activate”, the app pings the LSP just to check it’s not offline. We still haven’t told them about the funds, so they’re not hot yet. If the LSP responds, we can choose to finally activate. This discloses the cold channel to the LSP, making it spendable (and hot).

In the "activate reserves" screen, the app keeps a log of all the cold channel deposits that have been made but not yet activated. At this stage, everything is cold and the LSP counterparty is not aware they even exist. No constant vigilance: they're as safe as any other address.

In this UI concept, cold channels you’ve made but not used yet are called “reserves”, to suggest that they’re available but not yet included in your spending balance.
To use one, we have to activate it - which makes it no longer cold, so we shouldn’t until we need it!

Receiving into a cold channel is just an address on-chain, a CTV construct involving your key and public info from an LSP. Perhaps you get 10% of every payslip sent to these. Since they’re cold, there’s little risk.
The sender doesn’t have to do anything special, or even know.

A simple useful path switch idea, usable today without CTV, is fallback for multisig.
Build a script with a second spend path, where after 2 years, you need fewer keys to spend.
If you haven’t lost any keys after 23 months, just send to yourself to restart the timelock.

If you choose to ACCEPT payment via CTV, the payer needs to pass you the Template for every step between your coins and the mined Tx.
That’s what you need to fully exit if you want. We always have to store data: private keys, channel states for LN, now spend paths for CTV.

If CTV was live, Bob can make his address key be a signed but unbroadcast Tx sending to Charlie’s address. Nodes will reject any other spend as invalid.

OP_CTV, Check Template Verify, proposes a new primitive added to the family: check that the SPENDING transaction, hashed, matches one we defined.
It’s kind of like using Tx data as the key for the lock, instead of a private key. And if YOU build the address, YOU decide the terms.

You build a transaction with the To addresses, attach your UTXOs, and show whatever’s needed to unlock them. Then broadcast.
Before it’s included in a block, Bob can’t be SURE he’ll get the coins. EVERY ownership change MUST touch the chain to become immutable.

Addresses are built from the spending conditions YOU want for YOUR coins. You have a key, you define a lock that it opens, that IS your address.
Coins (UTXOs) sent to the address must be unlocked to be spent. You defined the lock, you decide what opens it, nobody else.

James O'Beirne made vaults with CTV but wished for further functionality and made OP_VAULT, however it still uses CTV itself for the withdrawal process.
Salvatore Ingala, the creator of MATT (Merkelize All The Things), intends to include OP_CTV in his spec for OP_CCV.
Steven Roose's TXHASH uses OP_CTV as its default mode but desires for more functionality such as Introspection.
Gregory Sanders (Instagibbs) tweaked his spec to include CTV-emulation to save a round trip for making LN-Symmetry channels.
Brandon Black (Reardencode) uses CTV in his LNhance proposal to more efficiently enable LN-symmetry than APO.
Why do I mention all this? It is clear that CTV itself has rough consensus, everyone wants to use it in their proposal but everyone (except Brandon) refuses to eat crow and admit that rough consensus has happened for CTV. Everyone wishes to extend beyond the capabilities for their own interests but we cannot simply enable everything at once.
We truly cannot know what advanced covenant proposals we will desire until we enable basic covenants. CTV has a very narrow design space and there's been no questions about its risks or design. The biggest issue holding it back is its lack of enabling LN-Symmetry and once it was discovered that CTV+CSFS is actually more efficient than APO, there's been no more excuses. Maybe today isn't the day we activate, but its time has come.

So Rearden went through the process to creating a version of txhash that was CTV+APO, here's a table that shows what's hashed.

The script itself should look relatively normal, but there'll be an extra associated 32 byte hash that is used to evaluate the script when you're spending from it.

Here's the txhash with CTV+APO by Rearden. He ended up abandoning it in favor of Template Key which is a 33rd byte extension to CTV but it isn't anywhere near ready and needs probably years of bikeshedding to finalize it. He's in favor CTV now then later extending to either TXHASH or CTV as necessary.
