you’re not going to win this one. What it boils down to is that you’re refusing the perfectly viable solution right in front of you for a trivial reason. You would hate it if someone did that to you. If you took your phone to the repair shop because some part was broken and the repair shop refused to give you the part they had because they didn’t think it looked good enough, you go ballistic. Yet when we go ballistic for you refusing to give us a perfectly viable speech engine because it doesn’t live up to your idealism, we’re bad. That is a huge double standard.

then see the real problem here. There is a solution. It’s being refused. It’s being refused for a trivial reason. That would be like you taking your phone to the repair shop because the screen fell out, them having a screen, and then being like oh by the way, we’re not going to give you the screen because we don’t like the way it looks with your phone.

yes it is. It’s on the thread where the original blog post was posted. I try to be understanding earlier in the year because there was genuinely no solution. Now there is and it’s being rejected for the most trivial of reasons. If you bought a phone that didn’t have a screen and you couldn’t use it, you’d flip your lid too. If your local repair shop refuse to give you a screen because it didn’t look like they thought it should, you’d go ballistic.

no, you don’t because you’ve never had to fight with a device you couldn’t use because of an essential feature was missing because people didn’t want to use the solution that was right there in front of them. If you bought an iPhone and it was missing a screen, you’d flip your lid. if the repair shop near you had the green and just refuse to put it in, you’d flip your lid. There is a speech engine here that would work and they’re refusing it. That speech engine is my screen. Without it, I can’t use the device. I tried to help out when there was genuinely no solution, but now there is a solution and it’s being refused because it’s not good enough

my standards? My standards are simple. Everybody can use it out of the box. Why is that so wrong? They have an option and are just refusing to use it. You know, it’s very easy for me to tell the people who need accessibility features from the ones who don’t because the ones who don’t act like this is just some trivial little issue that can be pushed back.

still though, you're working under the assumption that all of us have someone trustworthy on command to help us set up our phones. Spoiler alerts, we don't. Since there's no way to push an app to the phone at the same time. Things are flashed, we're screwed. I love what you're doing but that is really putting me off of using it. If I can't set up my phone independently, that's a barrier. I don't always have trustworthy people on hand. I would venture a guess that a lot of us don't. I live with at least one Snoop. We're talking someone who would immediately start going through my messages.

that’s still a little frustrating though. It’s possible to be two security conscious to the point where you lock out every text to speech engine ever and severely limit your customer base.

well something needs to be implemented. I know you’re trying to be cautious, but not all of us have somebody we can trust on hand to set up our phones. It just doesn’t work like that. I’m not trying to tell you how to run your business. I’m just saying this is extremely frustrating.

they could yes, but there’s the issue of finding a version that has direct boot support. If it doesn’t have direct boot support, it’s kind of useless in this scenario anyway. Honestly, I am very strongly pushing for that. I installed it once on my old phone, but sadly had to remove it because play integrity was screwing up my reading app. Now that I don’t need the reading app, I really want it back, but I’m not prepared to handover my phone to someone. I don’t trust to set it up.

honestly that’s one thing I’ve never messed with. The regular keyboard is the only one that will allow me to type in my preferred method that I have found so far, plus there’s voice typing, which is my friend.

honestly OCR is what the extra screen reader is mainly for because it does a better job anyway. Google hasn’t quite gotten that one polished yet, but then again neither has Apple so yeah.

that’s probably the route I will end up taking. Once I can get connected to Wi-Fi, I can get a third-party screen reader that comes with its own speech engines. That will get me running long enough to not have to give anyone my Google account password. Well, it should. This is my first time even considering something like this. part of me is still wondering if it’s a good idea to try this on my main device, and part of me is like you haven’t broken one yet.

if I don’t lose my nerve, you’re about to have one more. I’ve been talking with your people on discord. I was going to suggest working with E speak but it sounds like you’ve already considered that. I think that’s the open source engine anyway. I’ve been wrong before. It sounds like crap, but then again people could change it as soon as they got their device set up.

do you guys have a device support list? I don’t see why mine wouldn’t be on it but then again I don’t know. People have been praising this thing to the skies and I’m almost talked into it. I may have to call Be My Eyes to set up my phone or something, but oh well. As long as I can still run most of my apps, we should be good.

I really really really really really wish I could try out your platform. It’s not the technical issues stopping me but the no talkback thing. I have to have talk back during set up or I can’t get anything done. From everything you and others have told me I wanted so badly. so badly do I want it, in fact, that I would take the data wipe. It’s nothing that can’t be backed up.
